We already had that Freiburg debate in the general transfer thread.

First of all: sorry, who the heck cares about the wage? I mean it's nice and all but he's not going to play in Europe to increase his wage. There is 0% chance he's going back to Kashima unless he stops getting play time anyway.
Second: it's not a waste, because if he doesn't get it in 3, 4 years, then it means he's not good enough, it's not about luck at all.
The only thing we can say for sure is that he has more chances to get that "offer from clubs in the first division" while he's already playing in Europe than from the JLeague.

    This.

He can be seen by German scouts, as well as scouts from all European leagues very easily. This is a good move for him even if he is making the same amount of money. Whether one thinks the J-League is even or below the level of the 2.BL, the fact remains he is getting a chance to show what he can do on a larger stage. If he fails at 1860 or 1860 fails him, this opens the doors across Europe for a good, young player.

Dax is correct that this can only be a positive move for Osako.

What's the most interesting thing in the next weeks is not if but how fast he can adapt to European football, culture, language etc.... We know other Japanese players have proven they can do well in Buli but still they werent under the pressure to do well within the first 6 months to get to a WC.

From my pov as a 1860 fan I think only after at least one complete season you can say if Yuya will make it at 1860 and Buli in general and rating him before that would be unfair.

Also the other thing is that expectations may be high for Japanese players moving to Germany, but the recent success has been with AMs and fullbacks. In terms of strikers: Takahara had only sporadic success despite scoring 26 goals in a J.League season, Chong Tese couldn't make the cut in 1.BL, and until this season Okazaki was mostly a winger. I'd say that playing CF in a lower-table 1.BL team would be a bigger risk than starting at 1860.

That is true. Then the pressure for him is even higher since 1860s striker scouting was an utter failure in the last years. Kenny Cooper(!!!) On the other hand his advantage is he could, as Im hearing, play AM as well.

A brief article on Osako coming to 1860. It basically covers what has been covered here and elsewhere except for Funkel's musings on a few areas:

    Is the transfer final?
The signature is still not done but that will be done this week. Terms have been agreed to (not published). The medical was done during his trip at Christmas.

    Where will Osako play?
Funkel notes that he is above all things going to play up front. He says he is a good runner, challenges well and "ice cold" in front of goal. Funkel notes what has been discussed above; that either he must change his current 4-1-4-1 system in order play Lauth and Osako OR must sit Lauth or Osako. In the coming 5 weeks he will try different things to see what happens...but it is noted that he will not simply give up on Lauth's current starting role just because Osako has arrived.

What waits for Osako in Muenchen?
Osako does not speak German and knows little to no English (so they think...is this true?). He will have an interpreter for the first several weeks. Funkel says football is a game of gestures and players talk with hands and feet. ;) He says Muenchen is a big city with many Japanese. I have friend who owns a sushi restaurant and is an ardent 1860 fan. I know he will contact Osako to welcome him.

Are the Lions looking for other players?
Funkel wants another offensive player (reported to be an attacking midfielder). The candidates they mention are going elsewhere or not interested in 1860. I know of two other players they are looking at now but cannot say who yet. If they can be gotten they are players who play very much like another former 1860 player, Thomas Haessler. Should know in 3-4 weeks if either of these players can come.

Yeah it's very likely. It was like that for most of the japanese players who moved to Europe afaik.

Just got a text from a friend at the airport. Around 30 fans with a few more showing up. Several Japanese there too. Flight just landed. 1860 is said to have sent a few people but none appear to be there now. Dinner is planned for him if he is up for it according to someone who works at the club.

To be fair, Cooper's lack of success had more than just himself to blame. Let's hope Osako gets as much of a chance as Lauth has had.

Basically yeah. Not so much an accent...but a long "oh".

Yūya Ōsako (the bar thing indicates a long vowel, like You-yuh Oh-sako). Soft "s", as in "ß" rather than the hard German "s". Think "Juuja Ohssako". ;)

    Yes. 1860 or Kashima.

Unless he makes it to WC and explodes there. Which I dont think will happen. I hope the move works for him, but I dont think it's a good one

listen at 1.40. Even the O, while technically it's as naopon said, doesn't need to be excessively pronunced. At 2:41 they say it more as it's meant to be

Wow, really? Why it has to be black and white? No chance that, say, after two seasons not-too-hot but not too bad he just moves to a stronger 2.Bunesliga club and I still think we're being pessimistic?

That goal is just class. For one moment it even sounds as if the Japanese commentator is shouting "Tor!".
