I don't think this reflects poorly at all on the Dynamo, except to the extent they picked a sponsorship partner that probably fit relatively few checklist boxes except for the dollars offered and the now-deposed CEO being a soccer fan. The fact that Greenstar wanted out and Waste didn't even think the last year of the deal worked for them sort of supports that a non-retail recycling company is a tough fit. Now, I'm sure they paid the Dynamo something to get out of the last year of the deal ( recall it was 3-yr deal with 2 option years). And it was roughly $2.5m per year. Be interesting to see what they get next time. I suspect they will have a deal that gets more or is at least structured such that it appears to be a more lucrative deal.
I've given up on the team coming to their senses and bringing the swirl back so now I just get some blue paint and add the swirl to any jersey I buy.
This has been brewing for some time. Greenstar's parent company in Ireland has been in bankruptcy for a while, and it's US arm was sued by it's former President. The lawsuit claims that earlier last year, Waste Management offered somewhere in the region of $400 million for Greenstar's US company, but the parent refused the sale because it was afraid the sale would adversely effect them. Shortly afterwards, the Irish company began experiencing severe financial problems and ultimately filed for bankruptcy when financial institutions recalled their loans. So - Waste Management is getting Greenstar for $180 million versus the $400 million the lawsuit claims they were willing to pay last year. This is a good deal for the Dynamo who have undoubtedly received a financial settlement to cover the remaining year of the sponsorship contract, and severed a relationship with a failed company. I'm wondering how easy it is to remove the transfers from my "Greenstar" jersey.
I'm sorry but I did get a chuckle out of Canetti's quote in the article about how the sponsorship helped Greenstar get noticed and acquired. I guarantee you Waste MAnagement knows every competitor in the industry with or without a jersey sponsorship.
....but at the top, under "Houston Dynamo," it still says "presented by Greenstar Recycling." At least right now it does.
I would love to see a popular local company on the jersey like WhataBurger, HEB or DrPepper, but primarily I'm hoping for a couple of things in a new sponsorship: --That the company be stable with a promising future --That it not be some crazy pyramid scheme --That it be at least somewhat familiar, at least locally --That it stays with us for a long time so people associate it with us, like VW for DC and AON with MU.
This is called "Real-Life Application of Public Relations Spin": I didn't realize the old sponsor was such a burden.
Shiner could though. Canetti talks about getting a firm with Houston roots though. Kinda just hope we get that oil money.
Marathon anyone? They definitely have the $. I'd be cool with anything oil related, beer related, or just texas related.
As much as anyone wants a specific sponsor or think one would be cool, it comes down to cash - which is why we has a commercial recycling company on our jersey the last two years. And go to the team or stadium website and I would bet that we can't have a jersey sponsor from a competitor on those same industries listed there. Like AT&T won't allow Verizon on the jersey and I bet the sponsor agreements dictate that. I doubt the team is dropping any sponsors to shoehorn in a competitor unless it is a very outsized deal.
I dunno about that. Greenstar, a waste recycling company was the jersey sponsor. Budweiser is garbage
