Yes, we UNC fans are thrilled to have her in Chapel Hill. She is one of three very highly raked players to commit in December of 2010. Horan was the top field player and top forward, Bryane Haeberlin the top keeper, and Laura Leidle was the top defender, but she decommitted 7 months later to go to Stanford. Overall we are very excited about the Tarheels 2012 class and are eagerly awaiting the official announcement to find out who the last few additions are going to be.
Was she the one playing what looked like left mid? If so, she was very good. EDIT: Oops, nope, the one I was thinking of wasn't Horan. It was Kendall Johnson, who indeed was playing left mid. Horan played forward. I should have recognized Kendall, but thought she was playing in California rather than for the Rush. She and Horan were a good combo.
That's great. FYI, the attendance at the game was 4500. The Sounders lineup was predominately a West coast group: Coach Michelle French and Rapinoe, Cox, and Winters (Portland); Solo, Perez, and Deines and probably others I don't know (Washington), Morgan (California), and Leroux (UCLA) among others. To me, this is the beginning of the way to build a lasting and very popular women's pro league.
2012 roster is posted. it looks like a florida size roster. since when did we turn into FSU with non american players? I found some info on Marina Nesic: http://www.thepacwest.com/sports/wsoc/2010/news/PacWest_Release_-_GCUs_Marina_Nesic_-_May_18_2011
Anson should we play Marina Nesic today? -Dino Who is she? - Anson haha Half of those players can't even travel to away games.
Thanks for pointing to this, Rambunctious. I had checked earlier today -nothing. A surprise for me was to see Maria Lubrano's name on the roster. She has been red-shirted both in 2008 and 2010 and I has assumed that she had graduated by now having spent 5 years at UNC. Of the three recruits we were waiting to hear about, I can find absolutely nothing about Michelle Clemente. So we know from the roster that she's 5'2" and hails from Caracas Venezuela. She could be a great little player or a wannabe. We'll just have to wait and see. I found some things about Madelyn White. She's played on her Wyomissing high school team in east central PA. She also plays club on the FC Revolution U-18s based in Reading, PA. No mention of accolades in either case. Her team did play in a half dozen showcases last year, so perhaps that is where a member of the Tarheel coaching staff saw her. While I stand to be corrected, it might appear that Madelyn may have some ties to NC (or at least UNC) in that one of the photos on her Twitter page shows a 4 month-old baby in an UNC shirt. (Nephew?) One thing for sure, in all of her team pictures, she is one photogenic gal who looks older than her teammates. Marina Nesic is indeed listed on the roster of the Serbian senior women's team. It may be that the 5'3" Marina will get some serious playing time while the 5 U-20s are all off in Japan early in the season. It appears that she will have one year of eligibility and is enrolled as a graduate student at UNC.
Michelle Clemente started all 3 games for Venezuela in the 2010 U-17 World Cup, including a 2-1 victory over Katie Bowen's New Zealand squad. Only 17, she misses the cut-off for U-17 in 2012 by only a few days. Not sure if she plays for the Venezuelan U-20 team, but both youth teams missed qualifying for this year's World Cups. Might be another option for Anson when starters are missing time this Fall. Some photos I found: http://www.fifa.com/u17womensworldcup/photo/129/887/4/picture.html#1298874 http://www.womenssoccerunited.com/photo/michelle-clemente?xg_source=activity
Check this video compilation of Marina Nesic. The cut back/goal at :35 is NASTY! I immediately had flashes of Dunn and Brooks when I saw this video of her. She seems speedy, aggressive, technical and everywhere. Some of these highlights are against EURO national teams (maybe youth) and she really stands out. This young lady could be a nice surprise in her short stay in Chapel Hill.
Nesic is the real deal.....will be one of their best players, even when everyone is present. Another top ACC school went after her hard but couldn't get her in academically due to her graduate/one year status. UNC will be very good and deep. I believe the top ACC team from mid-October on.
Nesic is the next Teresa Anania. Supposly this awesome player that never sees the field. Leaves after one season.
Ooo! Based on this photo, I like this little gal already! Concentrates! (Holds her tongue out the left side of her mouth like Michael Jordan.) Cooperates -Coachable! (Wears her full-size shin guards right down to her ankles. [I'm a safety minded ref...]) Creative! (Given the obscenely large socks, (obviously men's left overs) she takes a tuck at the top of her shin guard and turns down the top to make them fit.) Good Fundamentals! (That knee is coming into position right over the ball.) Pace on the ball! (Her jersey is flipped up indicating a leap to her plant foot for a solid strike even as she is using her foot inside for accuracy.) Independent! (Check out the really serious hair.)
Links above are the same and not sure how to edit my first post, so here is the correct link showing a second pic of Michelle at the U-17 World Cup. FIFA U-17 2010
The interview with USSF's Sunil Gulati, April Hendrics, and Jill Ellis last week yielded this quote form Hendricks: "We have an 18-year-old who’s been offered a rather large contract to play in France. She was like, ‘Do I go to college or do I go to France?’" That'd be Lindsey Horan who spent much of last summer practicing with the French club and wrote that she loved the experience. Apparently she was talked out of taking the money and staying in France, but does that say anything about the chances that she'll be at Carolina for 4 years?
Are you a raging idiot or what? Obviously not a fan since you are trying to get Nesic demoralized before she even hits campus. As for Anania show some compassion you fool. She has a debilitating illness and is back home getting it looked after. Talk to some tarheels before you spout off your nonsense. I looked up "enfuego" in Urban Dictionary and #2 describes you perfectly. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=enfuego Once a moron always a moron.
Some tidbits for Tarheel fans... Looking at the W League I find 6 current or former Tarheels playing among the 30 teams. And they all are doing well at this point in the season! Nicolette Dreisse, a 2013 recruit, is the leading player offensive for the North Jersey Valkyries. After two games played at midfield, she is the leading scorer and has an assist as well. Taylor Ramirez is getting great experience with the Santa Clarita Blues. She is the only field player on the team to have played every minute of every game. She's played 180 minutes in three games at defense. (Kinda like Whit Engen who has played 180 minutes in two games for the undefeated Pali Blues.) Lindsey Horan is the dominant forward (duh!) for the Colorado Rush, and Amber Brooks is playing whole games with the NJ Wildcats (as is Yael Averbuch.) Another tidbit is that 2012 recruit Madelyn White just graduated as one of 166 seniors from Wyomissing as the Valedictorian. Straight As for 4 years!
Full info for this season's recruits is now up on the official site. Also confirms that Cowie will be redshirting this season due to recovery from a torn ACL.
