My first reactions: 1) I am glad we could split that dollar between Gil and Grabavoy; 2) I hope Leone Cruz truly feels the four cents more he makes than the other guys on $44k.
. . . and if you want to explore further, here is the complete list for all 19 teams from the MLS Players Association.
OK, so who is on your underpaid & overpaid lists? Underpaid: Velazquez, Schuler, Bonfigli, Espy Overpaid: Enzo (though he's GA), Johnson Oh I hope I didn't just kick off another Sabo sucks/Sabo rocks thread...
Mostly the same, though I take Bonfigli of the Underpaid list. I think that is an appropriate salary for 4th/5th striker. It still amazes me that we've had Schuler for ~40K for the last few years. He has to bump up to the 100-200K range next contract. I may get stoned for this, but I'm pretty bummed we haven't seem much from Javi the last 2 seasons for his salary. I know he has been dealing with injuries completely out of his control, and I believe his salary is appropriate for his skill and on field influence. Just reminds me how much I/the team miss him on the field. Anyone remember how many more years are on Johnson's deal?
woooooooo, gil is making a FAT ASS check, freaking nearly 200k and he's what? 19 years old? none of the 33,750's surprise me, none in my opinion are underpaid. that's the rookie contract and unless you're taken in the high first round or are a GA you are not going to be making a lot of money. gotta earn dem bills. (and while some will say velasquez is underpaid, meh, not really. he's only played a few games and while he has looked impressive, he really hasnt proved anything....yet.) looking at the salaries, the ONLY one that kinda pops out to me as overpaid is Johnson. Ya, he's our energizer bunny, but he really doesnt put up the stats that say "I'm worth nearly $250k in this MLS Salary structure." This is highlighted by the fact that he is crammed between two defenders who have consistently been ranked in the top 3 in the league and are always finalists for the DOTY award. And the fact that he is nearly double Espy's salary. all the rest seem about right, obviously Javi's contract has been somewhat of an albatross considering he's played about a dozen games in the last year+. but it's not surprising or alarming given his injury situation. when he's healthy and playing he is obviously worth that contract.
It's really only been one year. Dude was killing it before the massive injury last year. 7 goals and 9 assists in 2010 in MLS. In 2011 he had 2 goals 3 assists in 10 MLS matches (don't know how many came before his injury) + 3 goals and 1 assist in the CCL championship stage. He and Sabo, the highest paid players, deserve a lot of credit for RSL's success in the 10-11 CCL.
Overpaid to me is Will, by about $45k. How else do we get that result against Seattle except by having him pair with Schuler outside? He does far more than we give him credit for, and I would value him around with Borchers. Beyond that, we've clearly rewarded Reynish for not trying for a starting job somewhere else. And as for bing underpaid, it's 100% Schuler - but he's really only underpaid based on this year, and that's the point of a contract - valuation over time. Bonfigli has all of 45 minutes of playing time. No need to change that salary. And for all he's done unexpectedly, Sebastian doesn't even make the bench most games. Hence, that'd be an appropriate salary for a kid out of a JC who was a longshot to even make the team. Mostly I think our salaries are spot-on. We could use this list paired with a list of how long the contracts run for to really judge them.
Unfortunately for Espy, that's the contract he renegotiated over the offseason; it's his for four years.
I wouldn't really say Steele is underpaid. Aside from those wonderful goals, he hasn't really struck me as a guy worth more right now. Epsy is underpaid and Johnson probably a little overpaid. Other than that I'd say they're pretty spot on for what has been proven so far. I'd slightly undervalue Schuler over the course of the contract, but for past/present I'd say he's certainly moving towards underpaid depending on what his next contract is.
How about Rimando on the underpaid list? He's got save of the week more often than not this year, and has earned the MNT call up as well. Looks like most other first-string keepers in the league earn about $175 as well, so maybe it's appropriate. But in terms of contribution to the team, I think Nicky deserves more. Switch Rimando and Johnson's salaries and it seems about right to me. Oh, and give a bit more to Schuler and Espy; they're both underpaid. Not sure that Cruz is earning his extra 4 cents...
I went through the top four paid defenders on each team for comparison purposes to our back four (rounded to the closest thousand). I may have missed someone as I went through; Philly, for example, is only listed with three defenders. RSL: Olave (250k), Borchers (212k), Beltran (165k), Wingert (145k) ---------------------- Chicago: Friedrich (230,833k), Segares (217,350k), Gibbs (165k), Anibaba (105k) Chivas USA: Califf (275k), Riley (120,963k), Jazic (117,500k), Valencia (50k) Columbus: Marshall (341,250k), O'Rourke (145,600k), Miranda (140k), Mendes (106,290k) Colorado: Wynne (326,667k), Moor (247, 189k), Freeman (110,793k), Marshall (93,250k) Dallas: Ihemelu (190k), Jackson (141,375k), Pertuz (84k), Benitez (80k) DC: McDonald (258,200k), Dudar (238,333k), Jakovic (228,043k), Russell (109,919k) Houston: Boswell (200k), Hainault (163,125k), Sarkodie (135,500k), Ashe (94,500k) Kansas City: Cesar (255,750k), Collin (216,250k), Harrington (151,833k), Besler (103,001k) LA: Gonzalez (257,000k), Franklin (228,333k), Dunivant (146,750k), Leonardo (131,250k) Montreal: Ferrari (185,475k), Valentin (142k), Thomas (94,667k), Wahl (86,068k) NE: Lozano (241,485k), Alston (169k), Soares (116,450k), Polak (73k) NY: Marquez (4,600,00M), Pearce (301,999k), Holgersson (190k), Conde (141,667k) Philadelphia: Valdez (268k), Lopez (125,088k), Williams (90,500k), Gaddis (33,750k) Portland: Wallace (159k), Smith (120,500k), Brunner (100,625k), Mosquera (97,500k) Seattle: Parke (185,325k), Johansson (182,833k), Hurtado (161k), Gonzale (125k) San Jose: Opara (185,900k), Hernandez (175k), Bernardez (100k), Ward (65k) Toronto: Frings (2,413,667M), Eckersley (390k), Aceval (199,087k), Cann (134,750k) Vancouver: Demerit (350k), Bonjour (276,988k), Young-Pyo (174,250k), Rochat (170k)
The Rapids win the over-paid defender award right there. Is there any reason for Wynne to be making that much?
Wynne's worth that salary IMO. 327k is not an insane evaluation by any stretch for a guy all MLS teams would like to have.
I don't see it. His speed is nice, but I wouldn't put his value more than $250,000 or so. I'm not saying he's bad, just that you could probably find a just-as-serviceable outside back for $75,000 less, which you could spend on a pricier forward or midfielder.
After tonight's game, he should have to use some of that salary for my heart arrhythmia. Or maybe for some stick-um for his gloves. Those football wide receivers can't have a monopoly on the stuff...
