The lowly Royals edge out the Yanks, 4-3. A-Rod grounded out to end the game, stranding Derek Jeter on 3rd base. They left 10 men on in total. The Yankees have scored only 6 runs in the last 4 games. Jeter continues ripping the ball, going 4-for-5 (3 singles, 1 double) and raising his average to .404. David Phelps, in his 1st MLB start, went 4 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and striking out 5.

This is an activity Mariano has apparently been doing for the last 18 years as a pre-game warm-up. The Yankees, over the years during spring training and in the regular season, have left Rivera to his own devices as far as keeping in shape is concerned. They have always let him set his own routine.

This isn't the same as Joba Chamberlain jumping on a trampoline or Aaron Boone playing basketball. It was an on-field accident and nobody's fault. Shit happens. Looking for a head to chop off would be wrong.

Mariano will be getting a second opinion in New York on Monday, FWIW.

I was gutted to read the news. Just gutted. Sad day in Yankee land.

I think he'll be back next season. He won't (can't) go out like this. Even if its a bit part role next season i think he will be back.

Derek Jeter whacked a 2-run homer during a 4-run 7th inning to launch the Yankees to a 6-2 victory. Teixeira hit a 2-run homer in the 1st. Sabathia went 8 and is now 4-0. David Robertson finished up in the 9th by striking out the side. He's now struck out 21 batters over 12 innings and hasn't allowed any runs. Joe Girardi said he is going to be switching between Robertson and Rafael Soriano for 9th inning duties.

    Box Score - Yankees 6, Royals 2

Andy Pettitte will be pitching Sunday afternoon for Triple-A Scranton against the Pawtucket Red Sox in Rochester. It could be his last minor league appearance before coming to the Bronx.

There's a lot of big talk being made right now, but I frankly don't think we'll ever see Mo throw another baseball in anger.

And here's a point to ponder...

So the Yankees can't get a hit until the 5th inning against a guy, Felipe Paulino, making his 2012 pitching debut and whose MLB career record was 10-31! Russell Martin's homer in the 7th kept it from being a shutout. Hiroki Kuroda still inconsistant as hell, only managing to go 4 1/3 innings. Freddy Garcia threw 2 innings of scoreless relief. 4 losses in the last 5 games for the Yanks.

Yankee big guns finally break out in 10-4 win. 6-run 3rd inning lead by a Robinson Cano grand slam. Swisher added a solo shot. A-Rod with a 3-run belt in the 8th. Jeter was on base 4 out of 5 times -- a double, a single, 2 walks. Phil Hughes had his longest outing of the year, going 6 2/3 innings and striking out 7.

Monday is a day off. Maybe we'll get a decision about Andy.

The Yankees are dithering around about the status of Andy Pettitte. The big shots are scheduled to meet today to discuss the situation. I don't know why this couldn't have been taken care yesterday. It happens to be that important. Brian Cashman was quoted in the N.Y. Daily News as saying: "We're not making any decision on Andy Pettitte. I don't have to make a decision... We’ll take him when he's ready and when we feel he's ready to help us."

What the hell is an idiot remark like that supposed to mean? They have Pettitte impatiently sitting up in Rochester while they jerk off over this. I know Cash likes to keep his cards close to the vest, but this isn't exactly something which needs to be stamped "Top Secret." I hate it when Yankee management behaves this way. It's 'corporate culture' bullshit.

Anyway, here's the pitching form -- as it would go without Andy...

vs. Tampa Bay Rays (19-10, .655) at Yankee Stadium
Tue.- Ivan Nova (3-1, 5.58) vs. James Shields (5-0, 3.05); 7.05 on YES, MLBN
Wed.- David Phelps (0-1, 3.74) vs. Jeff Niemann (2-3, 4.05); 7.05 on YES, ESPN
Thu.- CC Sabathia (4-0, 4.15) vs. David Price (5-1, 2.35); 7.05 on YES, MLBN
vs. Seattle Mariners (14-17, .452) at Yankee Stadium
Fri.- Hiroki Kuroda (2-4, 3.75) vs. Felix Hernandez (3-1, 1.89); 7:05 on YES
Sat.- Phil Hughes (2-4, 6.67) vs Hector Noesi (2-3, 6.30); 4:05 on YES
Sun.- Ivan Nova vs. Blake Beavan (1-3, 4.32); 1:05 on YES

    A.L. East
    Baltimore: 19-10, .655
    Tampa Bay: 19-10, .655
    Toronto: 16-13, .552 (3)
    New York: 15-13, .536 (3½)
    Boston: 12-16, .429 (6½)

I would put Pettitte in there Friday. Kuroda, Hughes and Nova get pushed back. Phelps comes out of the rotation after Wednesday's start. Problem solved!

    Watch it and weep.

Additionally, Jose Campos (the other guy in the Pineda/Montero trade), currently pitching at Single-A Charleston, was put on the disabled list with elbow inflammation. Can this deal get any worse?

A 3-run homer by Raul Ibanez in the 6th puts the Yanks up-and-over Seattle for 6-2 win. Robinson Cano with 4 hits (3 singles and a double). Andruw Jones also homered. Solid game from Hideki Kuroda, going 7 and allowing 6 hits -- including 2 solo homers (one to Jesus Montero). Rapada, Wade, Logan and Robertson combine over the last 2 innings to close it.

Raul Ibanez hit an RBI double in a 4-run 2nd inning, followed by Jayson Nix's 1st homer of the season (starting at short for Jeter, who DH'ed). Ibanez added a solo shot in the 4th. Splendid outing by Phil Hughes, going 7 2/3, scattering 6 hits. He went into the 7th pitching a 3-hit shutout until giving up a solo homer. Boone Logan finished the game for his 1st save this year.

He had the Andy of old stuff going in the first 3. Its understandable if he's a bit rusty. I was really worried that he'll suck but he didn't. Now i know he won't embarrass himself or us. He'll get the rest of it together.

Mark Teixeira's 2-run homer in the 7th put the Yanks up and over in a 8-5 win over the 1st-place Orioles. Curtis Granderson knocked out his 12th. Ivan Nova gave up 5 runs on 7 hits in 5 1/3 innings before being lifted after rolling his ankle fielding a ball in the 6th. The bullpen shut the O's down the rest of the way. It looks like Nova will miss his next start. David Phelps got his 1st MLB victory. Raul Ibanez was taken out in the 9th when he got drilled on his right elbow by a pitch.

    Box Score - Yankees 8, Orioles 5
