CC was back and cooking -- 7 1/3 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 9 strikeouts, 13 wins. Swisher drove in all 3 runs, doubling home Jeter in the first and hitting a 2-run homer (with Jeter on base again) in the 7th. Soriano loaded the bags in the 9th but held on for his 32nd save. Indians have lost 9 in a row! Tampa Bay went down so the Yanks are 3 1/2 in front.

Every time there's a report it seems to be the same old thing. It's taking forever with these guys. I don't expect either of them until the middle of September. With Andy, the Yankees may wait until the last week or 10 days in the season to trot him out. From the N.Y. Post...
Tampa Bay lost this afternoon, so the Yanks lead is up to 4...

    Toronto: 56-69, .448 (17)

Also of interest is the Red Sox big trade...

Hiroki Kuroda's only mistake was giving up a 3-run homer in the 1st inning, but it was enough for Cleveland. The Yankees best chance was having bases loaded and none out in the 6th, only to get a lone sac fly score out of it. Tampa Bay lost again, so lead is still 3 1/2.

Freddy Garcia had a 3-run lead but got into trouble and couldn't make it through the 5th for the win. The bullpen came in to throw 4 1/3 scoreless innings with Boone Logan picking up the win and Rafael Soriano nailing save #33. Curtis Ganderson hit his 33rd home run. Tampa Bay was idle so the Yankees are 4 games ahead.

Rafael Soriano was a strike away from a 6-4 victory but allowed a single, followed by a 3-run homer. Jeter tied it up with a solo blast in the bottom of the 9th. A throwing error on a pick-off by Derek Lowe in the 11th set up the winning run, which scored on a ground ball. It was only Sori's 3rd blown save this year. So 4 Yankee homers go to waste -- besides Jeter, Cano hit 2 and Swisher had a 2-run shot. Tampa Bay lost and stay 4 behind. But Baltimore won and have jumped over the Rays into 2nd place, 3 1/2 back of the Yanks.

The really bad news was Mark Teixeira straining his left calf on a 4th inning at-bat. He'll miss at least a week, probably more. It's not likely the Yankees will move him to the DL, since rosters will be expanding on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Solid Phil Hughes, going 7 innings and allowing a solo homer for Toronto's only run. Soriano recovered from the previous night's screw up to get his 34th save. Steve Pearce batted clean-up for the Yankees, followed by Russell Martin (with his .195 batting average) hitting in the #5 slot. Is this what the Bronx Bombers have been reduced to!? Have injuries forced us all the way back to the Andy Kosco era!!?? EWW!!!

Talk about going quietly into the night. Yankees had just 5 hits and were struck out 12 times. The only scoring was Curtis Granderson's 34th home run in the 9th. Kuroda was off, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits (2 homers) in 8 1/3 innings. Derek Lowe contributed by allowing 2 runs on 4 hits in only 1/3 of a inning.

These are our pre-playoff playoffs, guys! WAKE UP!!

Sabathia left after pitching 7 with the score 3-3. David Robertson came in for the 8th and allowed a .203 hitter -- some guy named Chris Gimenez, who just got called up -- to single in what turned out to be the winning run. Yanks were held to 5 hits. Alex Rodriguez returned, going 1-for-4 with an infield single and a strikeout.

That Gimenez kid got a big hit off of CC too.

So now its squeeky bum time. We need the O's to stop winning. I think Rays won't bother us if we got slightly above 500 the rest of the way. Its the O's who look like the team of destiny. Need them to slump a bit.

I'll be honest, i haven't been this nervous about our run in for a few years now. I'm worried. This could all get away from us.

Robinson Cano gave the Yankees a lead in the top of the 1st with a 2-run homer, but the bats went dead after that. Freddy Garcia with his latest terrible outing -- 5 runs, 5 hits, 3 home runs, 4 walks in 5 1/3 innings. Baltimore crushed Toronto, 12-0.

Hiroki Kuroda blew 2 leads, but still ended up getting his 13th win. A key Tampa Bay throwing error plus a Russell Martin home run and his 3 RBIs total in the game put the Yankees over. There were 3 scoreless innings of relief from the bullpen, allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk. Rafael Soriano got save #36.

The Orioles went down, so the Yanks reclaim sole possession of 1st place. They begin a 4-game series in Baltimore tonight. The Rays are off today before starting a weekend series against Texas.
