    Justin Verlander struck out 14 Yankees and gave up 2 unearned runs. Meanwhile, Ivan Nova was a bust again -- 7 runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings. In his last 7 starts, Nova is 1-4 with a 6.98 ERA. He's allowed 67 hits and walked 12 in 40 innings. In his last 2 games, he's surrendered 21 hits and 16 runs over 10 1/3 innings! Yanks lead over Baltimore down to 5 1/2 games.

    Yankees win in a 20-run, 31-hit slugfest last night. Yanks had a 7-0 lead, but 13 Tiger hits and 2 Yankee errors almost gave it away. CC gave up 5 runs (3 earned) in 6 2/3 innings for his 12th victory. Curtis Granderson with a 3-run homer, his 30th. Every Yankee in the lineup had a hit. Lead remains 4 1/2 over Baltimore.

    Ivan Nova finally pulls it together and gets his 10th win, striking out 10 Jays over 7 1/3 innings. Casey McGehee hit his 1st homer as a Yankee, a 3-run shot in the 4th. Soriano with save #28.

    Trivia Time: Derek Jeter's 2 hits in today's game give him an A.L.-leading 150. It's the 17th consecutive season Derek has gotten 150 or more hits. The only other player to have 17 straight seasons with 150+ hits in baseball history is Hank Aaron. Wow!

    Nick Swisher's 3rd-inning grand slam was the big blow. He knocked in a total of 5 runs. Eric Chavez also homered. David Phelps went 5 innings before leaving. Derek Lowe got a 4-inning, 2-hit save, walking none and striking out 4. It was his 1st regular season save since 2001.

    Swish is on fire. I am gonna miss him next year. He brings a healthy playful attitude to the clubhouse alongwith being a good hitter.

    Yankees' 3-run 3rd inning holds up. Freddy Garcia goes 6 2/3, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs (both on Josh Hamilton solo homers) and striking out 6. The bullpen shut down Texas over the last 2 1/3 innings with Soriano getting save #29.

    Nova didn't come through again, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks over 5 2/3 innings. Yanks came back from 4-0 down to take a 5-4 lead in the 6th, but the bullpen tossed it away. Eppley, Logan, Chamberlain and Rapada all gave up at runs with Logan getting the loss. Andruw Jones homered and Ichiro went 3-for-3 with a double.

    5 solo homers put the Red Sox away. 2 from Nick Swisher, Granderson and Martin went back-to-back, Jeter hit his 10th (#250 lifetime). The Yankees now have 10 players in double digits in home runs. Hughes gave up 4 runs (none earned) on 4 hits, going 7. Soriano got his 30th save.

    Boston scored 2 in the 1st and that's all they needed. David Phelps wasn't bad, gaving up 3 runs on 7 hits in 6 2/3 innings and striking out 7. The Yankees offense was anemic. Granderson hit his 32nd homer for the only run.

    It was a mostly Japanese night at the Stadium yesterday. Hiroki Kuroda was great again, going 8 and giving up only 4 hits. Allowing the Red Sox a solo homer, his ERA has dipped to 2.96. Ichiro was 3-for-4, whacking out 2 home runs and raising his Yankee batting average to .322. Jeter also went 3-for-4 (2 doubles, 2 runs scored), jacking his average to .321.

    Lousy pitching kills the Yankees. Freddy Garcia went 4 1/3, striking out 8 but allowing 5 runs. Chamberlain, Logan and Lowe all gave up runs out of the bullpen. Boone took the loss. Derek Jeter went 4-for-5 with a double and a home run. Yanks division lead cut to 4 games.
