He's improved greatly this season. So far he's holding his place in the starting XI despite the return of Steve Cherundolo.
That's not too fair, they played the likes of Leverkusen, Bayern, Gladbach, Dortmund away already... and that's half of their away matches. Besides, they're not that much in danger of relegation atm, it seems hasty
Of course, it's not fair, but their president is more ambitious, and although he stated that he won't judge on results, there was some talk about he wants to see how they play today. Having watched the match, it's pretty safe to say they didn't do well.
Cherundolo will be 35 years old in February. He is past it. Sakai should have no problems being 1st choice.
Let's see who's going to be the new head coach, but I wouldn't see Cherundolo as the main threat for Sakai on the right SB position, rather than either a new signing or him being used on the right wing. They had bigger issues on the left SB however, with Pocognoli replaced by a midfielder recently.
Cherundolo's knee has sidelined him again. Hiroki has been adequate this season but you have to temper with the fact that there is zero competition.
Is Cherundolo still injured ? (sorry, I don't undestand very well ) Because H. Sakai seems suspended for next match.
New signing from Viktoria Pilsen, Rajtoral, starts on rb. Will be Sakai's main rival for the rest of the season, unless Cherundolo's knee problem gets miraculously solved.
He had a very good game. Still, it was just one game. It remains to be seen if he can play like this consistently. If he does, the RB spot is his to lose.
