I have the feeling that only having three sub-7k attendance the entire season will end up giving the 2007/08 season the victory in the best season competition, but the fact that this season is competing with that is amazing, IMHO. The ADP bump continued in Brisbane this week, but at some point you have to think that the poor performance of Sydney is going to start hurting their home attendance. The question is, will that offset the ADP bump at the away games?

How does the ADP effect compare to the Kewell effect?

Kewell had and still has a much higher profile than ADP in most of Australia.

It is too early to give a proper comparison. So far there have only been two teams that have had both Kewell last season and ADP this season. The only other road game for Sydney is Western Sydney and that one is a bit of anomaly due to it be a derby game. However, in the two teams the ADP bump is larger. Central Coast had a 6k+ bump for ADP, but only a 2k bump for Kewell. Wellington had a 5k bump for ADP compared to a bump of only 500 for Kewell.

I also seem to remember seeing a few articles after last season that indicated that Kewell's arrival was largely a failure with regards to attendance bumps.

Do you think the cricket had an effect?

I think the cricket would of had some effect but not to the degree it did. It is direct competition to the early kick-off games but the single Sunday A-league which was in a time slot to be up against the cricket rated better than the Saturday games that were not. Going to be interesting how they hold up next month with competition from the the Big Bash League

FFA expecting their 10,000,000th Attendee this week-end. and they'll get a reasonable prize too.
their current figure is 9,940,912 Fans.
Will it be this week (+59,000 required) ? And in which game (Sydney vs. Heart maybe?) or more likely in Round 10?

Almost guarenteed to be in the Syd game:
Friday night MVFC at home = 20,000
Sat CCM and Roar at home = 25,000
    Sun Wellington = 8,000
Leaving 6000 for SFC, who should get at least 12 - 13,000 even with last week's slide.

Cant really see an extra 6,000 in the above games, or 6,00 less either.

^Wiki has Wellingtons crowd at 5,405, which is about what I remember on the day

    Boy was I wrong:
    MVFC - 17,676
    CCM - 6,885:oops:
    Roar - 12,546
    Nix - 5,405:oops:
    SFC - 12,425

    Total = 54,937

Looks like Adelaide v Victory will get the 10,000,000th fan.

Sorry about missing last week.. Work blew up on me and I didn't have the opportunity. But the last two rounds were definitely a dropping back to the pack type rounds. Both rounds were below average compared to the same round in previous seasons. Obviously it is difficult to compare rounds across seasons as the hosting teams change, but perhaps this is a sign that the bump caused by ADP is over? The "good news" is that SFC is on the road this week, so we get to see if it is just the home ADP bump that is over, or if the road one has disappeared too. Sydney FC's numbers are still up when compared to previous seasons, but they are falling quickly and if they don't get the ship righted in the very near future, I wouldn't be shocked to see them back at their previous season totals in the very near future. All in all, the last two weeks were harsh all around. Every team was below their season average and most quite a bit below average.

Very disappointing turnout for the Heart. I've heard sub 5k.

Was Melbourne as hot as Sydney? Heat could explain it.

Just because round 11's games are in progress doesn't mean I'm late with this post! It's only late if the games end before I hit Post Reply.. So.. Another week, another poor number. This is the second time of the season that the numbers have dropped below 10k. It also looks like the ADP bump has gone away with a poor showing in Wellington. It could just be that New Zealander's didn't get as much coverage of ADP when he first joined the league, so they aren't primed to watch, but we'll find out more following SFC's next away game. This week pushed this season further behind 2007/08 and it is now within striking distance of previous seasons.

For this week, we've got a Sydney derby match and the Victory hosting the Roar, so I'm thinking good numbers coming out of round 11.

It looks like I decided to take the MLS offseason off from BigSoccer. :) So after a month of not posting the weekly attendance figures for A-League, please consider this a catchup post. Ceezmad posted the per game numbers for the weeks I missed up to week 15 and I'll be posting week 16 below. As for the league as a whole, it has fallen behind the 2006/07 season and is not ranked third in overall AAAQ. That still isn't too shabby considering what direction the league was headed following the 2007/08 season.

Overall the past two weeks have been quite good for A-League attendances. Last week actually saw this season jump back into second place based on AAQ led largely by a complete lack of sub-7k attendances. However, with two sub-7k this week, this season falls back into third place, eked out by the 06/07 season. This week also benefited greatly from the Victory/Sydney FC rivalry match, with the Victory home game bringing in the third highest attendance of the season, and Perth hosting Brisbane for their second best of the season.

Week 19 was a great week, getting the second best average for a week this season. A lot of that was due to the Melbourne Derby packing in 41,000, but another factor was that there was only one game below 10,000. Definitely a very good week for attendance at A-League games.
