Yet again, another good week for attendance with both the Victory and the Wanderers cracking 19k and the Jets surpassing 15k. While the remainder were below 10k, they were about average for the hosting teams. So far this season is kicking butt even compared to the best season in 2007/2008 Next week should be an interesting one with the Jets hosting their third game of the season and seeing if they will sustain their current numbers, the Heart hosting their second and seeing if they can improve on their dismal numbers non-derby numbers, and Sydney FC testing the Del Piero effect for another game. When I started following A-League, Reds have drawn 10k+ crowds and I still use this figure as the benchmark. But after last season disaster 8k+ are pretty normal, I agree. Hope it will heal over time and good results.
10k would have been partly because of novelty factor. Also all crowds in Adelaide have being pretty bad lately. Even the Adelaide Crows in the AFL have had poor crowds.

Definitely a good season so far. Sydney FC is kicking butt with their ADP tour, the Victory are being the Victory, and most of the rest of the league seems to up on their previous averages. But, not to get too excited about things, this is only the fourth game in the season and only Newcastle has hosted more than 2 games. This week we saw the first sub 7k game of the season with the Heart seeming to return to their standard low after their first game bump. The more troubling thing for Adelaide is that they didn't get the opening season bump that they usually get. This season their opening game only got 9k, which is the third lowest opening game attendance that they've gotten in their 8 seasons. The question is, will they stay level at their current average, or will they drop off as they normally would as the season progresses.
It looks like the consistency of the 07/08 season has been a touch too much for this season to keep the lead in the AAAQ, but it is still ahead in average and over 16k. So while this season did lost the #1 spot, it is still a kick ass season so far and as long the ADP tour continues to get its attendance bump and Sydney's monumental pile of suck doesn't kill the home attendance, this season could turn out to be a net win for A-League. Aside from Central Coast's ADP bump, I'd expect the numbers from this week to be about what the teams will get the rest of the season. The third game is generally about the time that A-league teams settle into their groove and the attendance for this week is usually pretty close to the season average. They will obviously dip some over the course of the summer, but the end of season bump generally makes up for that dip. This round was the worst of the season so far by attendance, but as Gold is the Colour said, the teams hosting was mostly a collection of the worst performing teams in the league. The good news is that next week is a collection of the better teams, so hopefully there will be a bounce in attendance after next weeks numbers. I'm also wondering when it is going to be time to start questioning the Heart about their attendance. They get amazing attendance for their end of the Melbourne Derby and that seems to "hide" the fact that they have problems getting over 7k. Take out the derby games and the Heart only have an average of 6100, the worst average of the surviving teams. I'm definitely not saying they should have their license pulled, but going into their third season, I would hope they'd be getting more growth than they currently are. Mainly because the Eagles and Dockers aren't big draw cards for TV audiences outside of Western Australia. The issues is that the Melbourne Victory, who by virtue of being around first and through name and colours (their jumper is based on the old Victorian state of origin jumper) is positioned as the state representative team. Melbourne Heart have a bit of an identity problem is that they don't really represent anything that isn't covered by the Victory. I'd honestly expect that a Geelong team would have slightly higher crowds than the Heart though Kardinia Park isn't really a suitable ground.
Which is a very poor foundations to build a new club on, especially when the Victory do a good job of representing the state.
Indeed, but such was the idea behind the second Melbourne and Sydney clubs -- to build up some "rivalry", i.e. hatred or at least denial for the "old" club. This cannot last forever, I agree, but it gives a nice kick-start to a new club. Now it's up to them to not screw up and build something bigger than simple hatred. IMO, Western Sydney has better foundations -- at least they may cling to geographical identity, hence the name itself is "Western". Maybe Heart could position themselves as the "city" team, as opposed to more "statewide" Victory? I dunno. And regardless of any identity, without good results everyone will cease to care, positioned or not positioned. To draw big, Heart need to win big.
Sydney also has a strong logical geographical split between Sydney and Western Sydney (everything west of an including Parramatta). Melbourne doesn't really. The other issue with the Heart positioning itself as a city team is that in the three southern states of VIC, SA and WA the states can almost be viewed as an extension of the capital city with each of the capitals taking up over a quarter of their states population. But ultimately sustained good performances are what is named for the Heart. They are in the league, whilst a Geelong, Wollongong, Canberra or Tasmanian team is not. I don't think the league can afford yet another club going under.
Maybe so but the AFL still schedules games for East Coast viewing and thats my point, when was the last time that the Eagles or Dockers played a local game starting after 7pm WST.
What's the attendance for Perth vs WSW? Can't find it anywhere, and the magical A-League app is not for me either
