I really doubt Savard ever comes back to play hockey again. I'll be happy to be wrong, but I just don't see it. But yes the Bruins should come back relatively intact. Marchand is rfa and Ryder is UFA. But nobody would miss Ryder. On defense just Kaberle and Hnidy are UFAs I think this was a tight series, obviously, where the difference was the Canucks wore down and collapsed physically (really shot themselves not closing out Chicago) and Luongo literally collapsed for all three road games. The Canucks had more high end skill, but when the minutes added up and they didn't produce the third liners were, with the exception of games 1 and 2 not able to pick it up. The Sedins also have real question marks as they were complete non factors in every series with a decent shutdown pair. San Jose was the only team that didn't. Boston the other hand didn't really have any stars except Thomas and Chara. But they rolled four solid good lines. Their 3rd and 4 th ate most other teams lower lines for breakfast. They also were able to spread minutes out. So while the Sedins and Kesler maxed out, the Bruins were fresher and were able to keep it going all the way till the end. They left vancouvers blueline in shambles by tonight. None of that was enough though. In the end boston s depth was only enough to match Vancouvers skill. In the Tim Tjomas simply said thou shalt not pass, and Luongo only showed up for three games. That gave Boston the slight edge.
Like I said before the series started, everyone thought the Bruins were just some unskilled team that relied on Thomas to win all their games. Their defense is the best in the league, and the ability to roll 4 effective lines, completely wears teams down. They're pretty good at scoring too, despite no offensive star. I doubt Savard is back, which isn't a big deal, I would take his cap space to get a goal scoring wing though. Krejci/Bergeron/Kelly/Campbell as the 4 centers works fine, with Seguin taking over for Recchi on the 2nd line.
I seen it on the news, people are saying how shocking this event is but I mean what on earth would you expect when you get that many drunk, angry fans all put into one place. I would expect it to happen in a lot of places if they were in the same situation would occur.
It's just that I think many people--myself included--perceive Canada to be an extremely peaceful, orderly country.
Most of these people weren't pissed off. It was a bunch of lunatic cereal anarchists that kicked off the trouble, and then some drunk teens got caught up in the festivities and decided to join in. The intent of many of these people was to cause trouble, win or lose. These kids were toddlers during the 94 riots and must've thought that it was pretty cool.
I and some friends said days ago that there would be a riot and most people said, "oh no, there won't be because we had the Olympics and everybody loves each other here we are so well behaved". Bollocks. We left a pub right after the game because we knew trouble was going to start. Then as we left some assholes were throwing beer bottles off the upper floors of a hotel down onto the sidewalk. This was from above 10 floors. Then one block later a huge fight started with several dozen people right in the middle of the road until the fire brigade came racing to the seen to break it up. No cops in sight. This was in the West End and no where near where all the action was. There were an indiscriminate amount of people just walking around with bloody heads everywhere, total chaos. This wasn't just organised anarchists, it was also a swath of the young general public, albeit probably uneducated trash with absolute disrespect for their fellow man. Sorry, but you have a bunch of alchohol infused idiots in large numbers salivating over a game that condones grown-up adults fist fighting each other in the face with bare knuckles legally in front of an audience including children. Does it have anything to do with it? Maybe. Will this happen again? Why would it not? It's happened twice now. Future public gatherings around hockey should be banned from now on.
Blaming fighting in hockey for rioting, even a little bit...christ. I guess we can blame goals for rioting soccer fans or hard tackling for rioting football fans now.
Yeah, though he is a reporter and that is his job. Either way, people in the middle of things and doing 'look, I was there' type stuff that interfered with the police's ability to control the riot isn't the same as being there as an reporter/observer/witness.
