    Where's the U.S. women's team?
They were there 4 years ago in the Pan-American games.

Seems like they chose top two CONCACAF qualifiers (Mexico and Canada) so US is not allowed to send a squad.

It is four CONCACAF teams in it Mexico,Trinidad&Tobago, Canada and Costa Rica.
But you are onto something, because except the host (Mexico), they are one from each subsection of CONCACAF. I am guessing CONCACAF split ther spots one to the host and one each to the best team from each subsections and since Canada was better in the last qualifications than USA they got NAFU's spot.

Christine Sinclair will be Canada's flag bearer for the opening ceremonies.

Much simpler than that. And nothing to do with subregions.

The top 4 would normally be invited, but as US is not competing, the 5th place team from the 2010 CONCACAF Gold Cup (Trinidad & Tobago, on goal difference over Haiti) was invited.

Top 5 from 2010 CONCACAF Gold Cup:
    1. Canada
    2. Mexico
    3. USA
    4. Costa Rica
    5. Trinidad & Tobago

As US did not send their full team anyway (in 2007 they sent their U-20 team), then the tournament is better off without them. In 2007, they lost 3-2 to Mexico in group play, and then Brazil hammered them 5-0 in the final. Who wants to see a USA U-20 team in a national team event? If they don't respect the opponents enough to send a full strength team, then they don't deserve to be there. If it's just because they can't get players released at that time - what about Brazil, Mexico and Canada? They seem to manage OK.

Actually it's not OK for Brazil because Marta won't be there, and , well, since she IS the team...

Still, Guadalajara brings very good memories for Brazilian football so, who knows, perhaps they will be able to pick up some inspiration.

I don't think it's fair to say she IS the team. She may be the most talented player, but Brazil would still be a very good side without her.

What I meant was that Brazil can still send a pretty good team without having to play the U-20 national team, so why can't the US do this too?

I am nonplussed by the Brazilian selection for the games (see here: http://www.cbf.com.br/noticias/selecao-feminina/2011/9/29/treino-selecao-feminina). I can see the idea behind leaving Marta, Christiane, Andreia, Aline, and Ester out for this competition. They already have plenty of international experience, and Brazil needs to develop some younger players for the future. But why leave out Erika and Fabiana, who haven't been around nearly as long? And why retain Formiga, who was the oldest player for Brazil in the World Cup? And, especially, why bring back Maicon and Tania, who are in the mid-30s and weren't even in the World Cup squad. I mean, I love Maicon, but I can't imagine that she will be on the squad for any future major competitions. so wouldn't it have made more sense to give another youngster a chance to develop?

Haha! Quit making sense! All you need to know is that there is no structured programme for the development of women's soccer in Brazil under the auspices of CBF, the most useless sports institution on Earth! Zero! Nada!

The men do send a U-20 team right? Or a U-22 team?

I think women should do the same, make it a Sub-23 tournament, which will give younger players a chance to play.

    Highlight video from Canada-Costa Rica [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB67oOeNGsA"]Canada 3 Costa Rica 1 Futbol Femenil Panamericanos Guadalajara 2011 - YouTube[/ame]

Stats showed Canada dominating possession. Kyle mentioned the heat and altitude. Good to see Kelly Parker was involved in two goals after being a non-factor in Germany. Pietrangelo, in case you were wondering, was added at the last minute because Timko is injured. That was a nice finish from her at an acute angle. Matheson wasn't involved so she probably has some injury too.

I gather from the team sheet that Brazil used a 4-4-2 alignment last night. Is that right?

9 out of 13 mexican players played in the last WWC, so it's basically the same squad.
