Borussia Dortmund enters this match having had their three-match winning streak in the Bundesliga snapped by a draw at VfB Stuttgart last weekend. However, BVB is also coming off a hard-fought Champions’ League victory over Olympiakos Piräus.

In their last five Bundesliga matches, VfL Wolfsburg has two victories (both at home against 1. FC Kaiserslautern & 1. FC Nürnberg), one draw (at HSV) and two defeats. The defeats came on the road at Bayer Leverkusen and in their last Bundesliga match, at home against Hertha BSC Berlin.

Personnel-wise, BVB is quite possibly better off than we have been for awhile. Lucas Barrios is apparently100%, but it is not known whether he will start against Wolfsburg. Honestly, I would move Lewandowski to Kagawa’s spot and move Barrios in at striker. But we will see what Jürgen Klopp chooses to do on Saturday. Sven Bender is once again a match-day decision. My opinion is if Bender isn’t 100%, he should not play. Start the match with Sebastian Kehl and Moritz Leitner at the double-six.

I really don’t have any real information on Wolfsburg’s personnel situation. “Bild” reported earlier in the week that Wolfsburg’s top goal-scorer this season, Mario Mandzukic, was sick. However, it has been reported that Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath has stated Mandzukic will be able to play on Saturday.

In the last six meetings in Dortmund between these two clubs, BVB has won three, drawn two and lost one. BVB won the meeting in Dortmund over Wolfsburg last season 2-0 behind goals from Sahin and Kagawa. In the last ten meetings between the two clubs overall, BVB has won five, drawn two and lost three. BVB swept VfL Wolfsburg last season winning 3-0 in Wolfsburg along with the aforementioned 2-0 victory in Dortmund.

The last time the clubs met in November was a goalless draw in Wolfsburg on November 30, 2008.

For those here in the USA, the match will be shown live on GolTV starting at 10:30 AM Eastern time.

I hope to see Lewndowski as starter for one more game, no need to rush Barrios back at this stage. Give him 15 minutes at the end of the match, then one more week to recover, and then let him start to see where he is at.

I will be watching the match tommorow morning LIVE in crappy non-HD MPEG on ATDHE Net.TV, as I have Dish Network and they stopped carrying GolTV a few years back over a bullshit dispute about $$$ for Dish Network to carry their programming.

I hope to see the match both sold-out and with the Sudtribune completely flooded with 25,000+ strong and ready to rock.

    GO WOLFSBURG!!!

Anyone else think the all-white kits we (Wolfsburg) are donning today are as shitty as our defense way is this morning as Kagawa clearly exploited on that breakaway goal just now?

Another fantastic goal, this time on a quick counter after Bender won the ball back in midfield.

    Half-time:

    Borrusia Dortmund 2:0 VfL Wolfsburg

Felix Magath is gonna give his club hell in the locker rooms, especially for that sloppy display of defense that lead to both goals in that first half.

You don't get the "MySportsGermany" channel with Dish's German package??

I know you only get to see the Konferenz on Saturday, but at least you still see the goals.

I'm sorry to you about how that went. I'm happy, but things like this are what I meant when I wrote at your thread that Magath has lost it for getting guys like Kyrgiakos and Chris to be your central defense.

You guys have a team of has-beens. You need some younger blood in midfield and defense.

    I think he's growing.

Great pass from Kagawa and not to take anything away from him, but Lewa got lucky there too.

He nearly overran the ball. But he got the job done and that's what matters.

I never thought I would write this, but Lewandowski is deservedly keeping Barrios on the bench at the moment.

And that is good for any BVB fan to see.

He definetly has grown . I have been watching lewy since his
Extraklasa days with lech and his move to germany
Has been so good for him. Hes evolved alot of elements to his game such as fighting for head balls, holding up the play so his team can catch up and most
Impresive for me is his knack for getting assists.

Never the less far from the finished product . He did get kinda lucky on the finish today. Shoulda tried somethin different. To bad kuba cant play like that. Our nt really needs him but oh well

I think Wolfsburg's frail defense was a bit understated. They made it far too easy.

Having said that this is the second match in which Dortmund looked better in midfield and the second match with Leitner in midfield. I don't think Bender plus Kehl work because they get in each other's way and do much of the same job for the most part. A Bender-Leitner partnership echoes last season's partnership much better and works for the formation because Bender does his usual job but Leitner keeps the ball better, he distributes it and generally is smarter regarding his retention.

It's very soon to throw this responsibility onto the youngster but it's showing very positive signs and something this Dortmund outfit has missed all season. Note how little pressure Wolfsburg was able to put in the middle and how much more in control Dortmund were because of it. The opponent was limited to fewer chances and Dortmund looked more calculated and varied in their attacks.

While I agree with you for the most part, I think it is difficult to take any real conclusions of this idea when you consider how bad the opponent was. Apart from their terrible defending, Wolfsburg were slow in moving the ball through the middle and mostly relied on players like Mandzukic and Schafer to work something out wide. They relied on crossing the ball into the box with hope of scoring and it's pretty much how their goal came.

Really loved what I saw from Leitner today, he looks amazing for his age. Hopefully he can become what we need in the middle of the park. I don't think it is too much responsiblity on him, he is the same age as Gotze was last season when he made his breakthrough. Also liked what I saw from the attacking four, they were all fantastic and rarely put a foot wrong out there.

    FINAL SCORE:

    Borussia Dortmund 5:1 VfL Wolfsburg

It wasn't even close in this match, but from what I read on the Dortmund forum, maybe Felix Magath should try to use some younger players on the defense as opposed to sme of the more-seasoned veterans (footyfan1 mentioned we've been trying too hard to rely on what he calls "has-beens") instead of infusing some youthful exuberence in the defense and midfield spots.

I may be only in my 2nd season as a Bundesliga follower and a VfL Wolfsburg supporter, but the way they played out there, it looked embarassing to see VfL getting routed like they did this morning.

BTW, I took footyfan1's advice and tried veetle.com for the GolTV feed and was watching the match LIVE on it until it completely blacked out on me, so I had to go to ATDHE Net.TV to watch the rest of the match, and the club looked (not SD/HD-like) was as flat as those god-awful all-white VW up! promo-only kits we were donning in this match, I'll still get this season's green/white VfL jersey instead.

I agree we shouldn't draw conclusions either but it worked well enough against Olympiakos as well. Moreover it is a slight turn in tactics which has been a long time coming to be honest and it needs mention.

The pressure on Leitner is that Dortmund are still competing in three competitions, and the pressure is even higher this season to achieve something so being thrown in like this is surely a testing experience but can become risky if relied upon. However Klopp does need to start ironing out those tactical flaws and build a core on which to carry this campaign on, and maybe, just maybe this is it. I really like what I see from Bender-Leitner and chances will be even better when Gundogan finds his role in the team. I always thought a 4-3-3 could be an interesting approach with Bender, Leitner and Gundogan in the middle, with the latter playing the advanced role.

I'd say he's developed to potentially being as good as him. He had 21 goals last season, and it doesn't look outrageous to state that he can reach that figure this season.

What i was saying was lewy has really grown.. earlier this season during this kind of one-on-one, maybe due to his nerves, he would either blast wide or shoot at the gk. the fact that he was able to try to chip over the gk as shown that he has managed to calm his nerves in this kind of situation and this is growth to me. while lewy has played well, i still hope klopp will try to play lewy behind barrios.. imo barrios is still a better poacher than lewy..

that aside of cos wolfsburg make it easy for us, but earlier this season u would bet on us to miss half the chances we scored ytd...

So did Wolfsburg's midfield. They were non-existent.

Oh please. That wasn't any great revelation we saw or anything we've been "missing." It was another weak opponent. I like what Leitner is doing, but he hasn't filled any gaping hole.

What is better with us is that our offense has finally awakened. Mostly thanks to Lewandowski and Kagawa finally getting their heads out of their asses.

And that happened well before we put Leitner in the lineup.

With all due respect, you seem to consistently neglect the tactical minutia and substitute for simpler components when discussing something like this. Leitner is a better retainer and a natural one at that.

Neither Kehl or Bender is, and that's a big reason why the team worked last year from a theoretical point of view and one of the tactical elements missing this season. Before you continue to talk about injuries, mental lapses, etc of course these are important but there's more to it including the collapse of the key band of Klopp's system, the center. Last season it was the biggest strength and the operating anchor of the outfit, and this season it's been the worst band - for a good reason.

For Klopp's system to work, he needs to link up the defense and offense, and add an element of composure that allows those quick transitions. Having someone like Leitner there is tactically a smarter choice because he fits the system better than Bender and Kehl who neglect retention duties and get in each others' ways. It's absolutely something that has worked and it shows. It's an experiment at the moment and we've yet to see if it figures into Klopp's bigger plans but a return to this when he has other options is telling that something was off and the way Dortmund played in the last two matches indicates a slight change - for the better. For the time being.

And I think you're too much into your own thoughts. But whatever man.

    I know what I'm seeing.

I'll put my knowledge of tactics of this game up against anyone's.

Klopp changing up tactics helped. He took far too long to do it.

So yes, of course tactics have played a role here, but not in the way you seem to want to will it to be.

I've explained over and over and over again.

We'll never agree on that. And yes, every time you come here and try to push the discussion in that direction, I'm going to make it known there is another side.
