I'd also question why Morwell (a town of about 15,000 people) was picked ahead of a Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo or Albury-Wodonga. Hell, given that Campbelltown counts as regional, should have played in Dandenong.
That was the figure that Win News was reporting last night, as the report went they were slightly disappointed with the crowd but noted that it was played at the same time as some of the local leagues were played and they had some local players competing in some championship in Mildura. Some lame excuses but I think that is a reasonable crowd for a regional area that has no real connection with the Heart apart from it being in the same state I agree with you personally I would of like it to be in Central Victoria (Bendigo) and see how many people they could attract from the other surrounding major centers but I think the reason why Morwell was chosen because they have a football background and they had a side in the NSL (as shown above), and they probably have some local people around that was really pushes for top flight football to return to the region, although the population itself is small the Latrobe City area has a population of 75,259 (according to wiki) with the majority in Traralgon (21,960) which is 14 km a way to the east and Moe has a population of 15,582 which is 21 km away to the west.
I was going to wait for the second Sydney game, but it looks like it has been postponed, so here is week 9's numbers: Is it too early to call this season a resounding success in the turn around of the league? Clearly some of the neutral ground venues didn't work out as well as one would hope, but there have also been some resounding successes. Not only that, but the teams seem to be taking turns seeing who can put up big numbers. This week it was the Jets dropping an impressive 17k. Sadly it was couple with the Heart not even getting 3,000 people to show up at their neutral venue game. Not to worry Heart, with how poorly Gold Coast is playing this year, you can almost guarantee they'll get at least one game with lower attendance than what the Heart put up. Perth is a joke, the city I mean, they have so much mineral wealth over there, and they cant build even one decent 20,000 seat rectangular stadium, they would pull twice as many with a state of the art comfort stadia to watch in.
As a sandgroper I don't want to get into a debate about Canberra and GST allocations. The stadium has very little to do with the Glory's crowds.
Glory have dished up seven years of utter mediocrity, it's a testament to the goodwill they generated in the first eight that anyone still turns up.
I disagree, its an ancient looking piece of crap, and many more would come to watch if they were seated on the latest design cool comfortable stadium, WA is the richest state in Australia, but has very little care for Football, just stupid AFL that no one in the world gives a shit about, wake up WA, and get with it!
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/newshome/9718788/barnett-confirms-stadium-for-burswood/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perth_Stadium This will supposedly have retractable seating (22,000 according to wikipedia). The government will see this as an upgrade from nib stadium so I doubt any fresh money will be thrown to nib stadium or any other rectangular stadiums in Perth. I don't know much about the layout of Perth (where this is going to be located compared the nib stadium and transport nodes etc.) but it will have a direct train link.
ah jus AFL rubbish, I wud prefer to see a small 20,000 rectangular stadium that is just for Football.
Unless the plans got started again and Wikipedia is wrong (shocking, I know), the plan to build the stadium was canceled...
Yeah, i'm pretty sure they got started up again. The original plans died with the World Cup bid, but it seems the WA Government has gotten them started again: Here's the latest article mentioning the development I could find: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-11-08/soil-testing-at-burswood/3653352
As the resident Sandgroper allow me to comment. They have the wrong picture on the wiki article- stadium will be at Burswood and not Kitchner Park. The stadium will be next to the casino and across the bridge from East Perth (where the WACA is). As part of the plan, either the nearest train station will be expanded or a new one built. In unrelated works, the government is considering building a light rail system around Perth and there will be a stop for the Casino and new stadium. I will be very suprised if it has retractable seating- that part was only for the world cup bid and even then only an attempt to get cash out of Canberra. You aren't a sandgroper so they probably won't consider your opinion. The new stadium for AFL has to be made. If the Glory or the Force want a new stadium then they have to justify it by consistenly selling out nib Stadium. Melbourne Victory got their stadium by selling out the Olympic Park. Even at best, the Glory will have to share a stadium with the Force and a possible NRL team. That article is pretty bad. A stadium is being built in Burswood for a billion dollars but unfortunately is unlikely to have retractable seats. There is also a strong push for it to have the same dimensions as Subiaco Oval. It's a different plan than what was mooted during the world cup bid. The government always planned to build a stadium, but saw the world cup bid as a chance to get money from Canberra. Funding from the stadium will possibly come from bulldozing Subiaco- in which case the WAFC (aussie rules) will probably be given the lease for the new stadium and possibly some money from the AFL. The WACA aren't interested in being involved. In which case the stadium will almost certainly just be a state of the art, larger capacity and better located version of Subi.
When I was a boy I had difficulty supporting Perth Glory because they reminded me of Freo. I watched games as a neutral and ended up with an attachment to the Reds.
Just as an FYI, my work has blown up on me and I haven't had the opportunity to set aside enough time to post the updates to the attendance. I have next week off, so I'll do a catch-up post then.
Might as well go a full month without posting the attendance. I'll do the catch-up tomorrow after all the Wednesday games are completed.
Where are all the people in Wellington? A team is on fire, solidly placed in the playoff zone, and regularly delivers sparkling firework results as 5–2 over Jets or today's 4–2 Sydney thrashing. Still, the crowds are in the less-than-convincing 8K zone.
That's not how attendance works. Fans aren't going to start showing up in numbers just because the Phoenix have done well in a couple of games. The Phoenix have been a fairly mediocre team. There have also been financial difficulties with the owners of the team. On the plus side, so far this season they are 2,500 over last years average, so at least they are headed in the right direction.
It hasn't been a bad month since I last updated the numbers after round 9. Round 10 was the only one that was below 10k which is certainly an improvement over the previous 2 seasons. Gold Coast still sucks, but they pulled in their best numbers of the year so far in their match-up against Brisbane in round 12. The Heart pulled in the highest numbers thanks to their derby match against the Victory. Additionally, Sydney FC got their best numbers of the season against the Heart, so apparently their hate is for all things Melbourne, not just the Victory. Sadly, the crowd was forced to watch a 4-0 shellacking, so that's not exactly going to help. On a related note, does anyone have a good source for the attendance figures? The league site has become very spotty in reporting the numbers, so much so that I was only able to get half of Wednesday's games from there and had to rely upon the ever "reliable" Wikipedia for the remainder. I would ask the Wikipedia posters, but it looks like the attendance figures are being updated by random IP addresses rather than regular posters. I've checked Fox Sports and they are rather spotty as well, rarely relying upon weaving the attendance figure into the prose somewhere.
When I used to do it back in the day (i'm glad to hand the baton over ) I used to use the official A-League site, failing that- then try news articles in the home teams official page, then try media reports in smh, sbs world game, faily telegraph etc. If the official site is failing to mention them regularly- that's pretty poor.
