They can finish these Games with incredible 14 gold medals. Who would have thought that 1 week ago (even though it was clear they would close the gap to Germany, USA & Norway)? Kudos!

If the US want to finish the Games on 2nd spot, they have to win the prestigious hockey final.

I'm quite happy with where the Dutch are esp considering that we lost two sure-thing golds owing to masive blundering. Finishing ahead of Russia is pretty hilarious.

    Well done to hosts Canada.

How does that benefit Brasil given Spain are the favourites?

Laugh all you want but every betting site I've seen has Spain first and Brasil second.

Congrats Canada tonight - not a big hockey fan but that was great entertainment. Really enjoyable Olympics overall despite what the naysayers said

The all time golds table for all olympics (both summer and winter):

    USA 1016
Soviet/Russia 617 (combined to preempt any whining)
    Germany/East/West 492 (ditto)
    Italy 227
    France 218
    Mediocre Britain 216
    Sweden 190
    China 176
Norway 160 (2/3 of which are winter medals )
    Hungary 159

Talk about owning the podium :D.

Keep in mind that Soviet/Russia's Olympic history is around 40 years shorter than many other of these countries. They did not compete between 1912 and 1952.

I wouldn't get too excited. A product of some pretty impressive German (well East German) engineering in many cases. Surprisingly, some of the women medallists were found to have vaginas.

Two golds and our first ever silver makes this the most successful winter Olympics yet for Australia.

It would be great to see us develop some more alpine skiing talent though. Since Steve Lee in the 70s, Zali Steggall's really been the only contender we've produced.

besides even if you took east germany out of the equation germany still ranks 3rd alltime at the summer games

Recently, Germany really sucks in Summer Olympics...so I wouldn't be surprised for us to lose spots there...

Others are gaining in infrastructure, while Germany is increasing its efforts to reduce doping and in this day and age, you need a team of experienced pharmacists to win anything...thankfully, our winter team seems to still have those.

germany has dropped off quite a bit at the summer games...used to be a shoe in for top 3 now usually top 5 or thereabouts...still kickin' ass at the winter games though.
not sure what you mean by 'nowadays', don't think doping is any worse now than in any previous decade....its always been there and always will.

Switzerland with 6 golds. That is frankly fantastic for a small country.
