According to their newsletter, the Breakers will be hosting a LIVE chat with their #1 pick from the draft on Friday. Here's the article They'll also be releasing the draft picks live on the league's fansite via Twitter. Can't wait to see who Tony selects!!
Five Questions with ... Amy Rodriguez SOCCER AMERICA: You been often mentioned as Boston's likely choice with the first pick the WPS draft. How big a change would it be for a California-born and -bred player like you playing in Boston? AMY RODRIGUEZ: I've been a California girl my whole life. I've never lived outside the state. If I get picked by an out-of-state team, it will be a great experience. I would love to see other places. At the same time, I don't want to get too carried away. I have to get picked first, and then I'll think about these things. I'm open to playing for any team in the league. SOCCER AMERICA: On the other hand, what would it be like to be reunited with your former youth club coach, Abner Rogers, the Los Angeles Sol coach, and get to play at home if a trade with Boston was worked out? AMY RODRIGUEZ: I would be happy with that, as well. Abner is a great coach and playing where I grew up would be amazing! My family could come to the games. Also, I'm still enrolled at USC. So, that would be easier. But, again, I'm open to playing for anywhere. I know there's always talk of trades when a team has the #1 pick but I just don't like it at all... The only deal I could deal with is a monster type deal....the kind that no team in it's first year of existance can afford to do... If we give up Amy for LA's first 2 picks I'll be wicked pissed!
Mocking up the 2009 WPS Draft Wednesday, January 14, 2009 By: Stacy Wahlberg | Special to womensprosoccer.com WPS Mock Draft 2009 1. BOSTON BREAKERS - We’ll start easy, because I think there’s only one answer here. Rodriguez, they will take USC forward, Amy Rodriguez. Best player in the draft by far. It doesn’t matter that Boston seems pretty stacked at forward, it would be a mistake to bypass Rodriguez. I wouldn’t want to be the coach or GM who took someone else because they didn’t “need” a forward. She has speed, she can create for herself and others, she can finish from anywhere and very efficiently, she is tactically sophisticated and technically skilled, she has a calm demeanor and is as effective when things are going poorly as she is when things are going well. She is a complete player and an impact player. Very simply, she is a star. Other possibilities: There are no rational ones. But let’s pretend. Notre Dame’s Carrie Dew would work well with this team. She is a central defender in the mold of Carla Overbeck. She’s a wonderful leader and keeps her defense on a string. She’d pair very well with Amy LePellibet in the central defense. UCLA’s Christina DiMartino would also be a nice fit with this team. She’s a central midfielder and Boston could use an engine type player so Kristine Lilly, Angela Hucles and the forwards could concentrate on finishing. She can keep an offense going and she’s got plenty of skills in the attacking third all of her own. Ultimately though, I really don’t see DiCicco passing on Rodriguez. I really like this Stacy Wahlberg....
I guess the cat is officially out of the bag! Rodriguez to be picked No. 1 overall By Monique Walker Globe Staff / January 15, 2009 Tomorrow, Rodriguez will realize her dream and become part of a new generation of players who hope this time women's professional soccer will stick. The Boston Breakers revealed they will select Rodriguez, a member of the 2008 US Olympic team, with the first pick in the inaugural Women's Professional Soccer draft, a 10-round selection process that will be held in St. Louis. "The people of Boston are really going to enjoy watching her develop," USC coach Ali Khosroshahin said. "She's going to be one of the best players in the league, if not the best player." Breakers coach Tony DiCicco was sold on Rodriguez's talent and general manager Joe Cummings was won over by her personality. wicked pissah!
Great news - welcome to Boston, Amy! Now we'll just have to wait and see if any newspapers pick up the "A-Rod to Boston" headline
That will be interesting to see. For now, welcome and hopefully you bring some SoCal warmth because um, it's a bit brisk here.
I believe Stacey Wahlberg is Beulah from Beulah Sports. If I recall correctly years ago Beulah used to post on BigSoccer.
Just made kind of "official" I guess, live on FSC! Obviously WPS wanted TV exposure so they had to spill the beans early.....fine by me!! Boston Breakers select Amy Rodriguez as their first pick! She looks great in Breaker Blue!

I did wonder/sorta hope to see her drafted. I really liked her play in college. Don't know how her medical school/residency stuff impacted her ability to move and/or take time off to play.
