The schedule for the Freedom's W-League team: All of the weekend home games are at 1 pm this year, presumably to allow for WPS matches in the evenings.
First roster announcement: Tegeler tried out for the WPS team but didn't make it. Parsons, McCarty, and Sandiford have played for the W-League team before - in fact, Sandiford was the starting goalkeeper for most of 2008 because Spisak got a concussion early on.
Is Gabarra coaching both teams? Since the WPS site relaunch, I can't find the link to the Wleague team on the Freedom's page. And my google skills failed me....
The W-League page is completely separate. It hasn't been updated in a while, but it's here: http://www.washingtonfreedom.com/WLeagueTeam/index_E.html and the home page for the other non-WPS stuff is at: http://www.washingtonfreedom.com/index.html And, yes, Gabarra's coaching both teams.
Looks like some more Noles will be joining Tiffany and the rest of the Freedom this summer. Not only are those great players from FSU, but all of those girls are solid, looks to be a promising summer on paper.
Well we're not the Pali Blues or FC Indiana, but I think we'll do pretty well until we come up against either of them.
I think Washington will match up well with either. I am a little shocked to see FSU's Ella Stephen on the Pali Blues roster. Usually girls go to teams in 2's or 4's but she is the lone girl from FSU to go to the dark side.
Revised schedule - most of the home games have been moved back to the evening, and the match hosting the Renegades has been moved from July 12 to July 1:
Freedom split the weekend, defeating Long Island but losing to likely arch-rivals Hudson Valley. Freedom 3, Rough Riders 1. Goals from Lenczyck, Germain, and Parsons. Christine Nairn, who just got her first cap with the full national team the previous weekend, assisted on the Parsons goal. Quickstrike Lady Blues 4, Freedom 2. Both Freedom goals by Brittany Tegeler, unassisted. Sky Blue's W-League farm team got two goals and an assist from Whitney Palmer, and a goal and two assists from Angelika Johannson.
Sunday's game was spectacular. Back and forth stuff, properly described as a "chess match" by one on-looker. Every goal was high class, some of them I dare say world class. Working on getting some video up because they are goals that need to be seen. Also in front of a great crowd of 2,000+ How is the turnout for W-League games down there? Has WPS hurt it? I've been to the SoccerPlex before and I know how nice it is. Should be a good one.
There haven't been any home W-League matches at the Soccerplex yet this year - the Lady Blues rematch next Wednesday is the first one. Because of the scheduling, the attendance probably won't be great, but there are a couple of other games coming up - we'll see how those do. I wish they'd set up at least one WPS/W-League doubleheader, but for whatever reason there aren't any of those.
Tonight's match with the Quickstrike Lady Blues has been postponed due to stormy weather. No word on the new date.
Freedom defeat the Western Mass. Lady Pioneers easily, 4-0, off two goals from Brittany Tegeler and one each from Jenn Parsons and Tiffany McCarty. According to the box score, the Freedom had 17 shots and 10 corners to 0 and 0 for the Pioneers.
The Freedom had an easy weekend of it at home, beating the New Jersey Wildcats tonight, 3-0, after demolishing the New York Magic last night, 9-0. Jenn Parsons had a hat trick and two assists against New York and added an assist this evening if the official scoring matches my informal tally. Still waiting to hear about the rescheduled match with Hudson Valley.
Okay, it's on the individual team schedules, but for some reason it's not on the W-League master schedule. Good spotting it - now I just need to see if I'm up for going to the Soccerplex the day after I make a round trip to Rutgers to see the Freedom play there.
That's the Thursday between a Wednesday home game and Sunday road game for the Lady Blues. That reschedule killed. So did the bus ride.
Yeah, I was looking at the schedules for each time and trying to find a reasonable slot to fit the game in, and I really couldn't: if the Freedom had an opening, the Lady Blues were playing, and vice versa. This might be the best they could do.
Freedom have a successful trip to New England, defeating the Western Mass Lady Pioneers, 3-0, and the Connecticut Passion, 4-3. The Freedom were down 3-1 in the latter before coming back to win, which kept them within one point of the division-leading Quickstrike Lady Blues. Scoring leaders: Lenczyk: 2 goals in the first game, goal and assist in the second Miskel: goal and assist in the first game, deciding goal in the second Tegeler: assist in the first game and two in the second Menchel: 2 goals in the second game
Captain Jenn Parsons scored two goals to lead the Freedom to a hard-fought victory over the visiting Boston Renegades, 2-1, in a game played yesterday afternoon. So far the only blemish on the Freedom record is the road loss to the Quickstrike Lady Blues, whom they take on in their next home game on Thursday, July 16.
