There's already a thread for serious discussion up top, and there's been some desultory talk in Eurotrash, but as the event draws nigh I'm sure we'll be glad to have a place to devote to fashion choices at the award ceremony, if naught else.

    Here's the list, for reference:

    Marta
    Cristiane
    Kelly Smith
    Inka Grings
    Birgit Prinz

    Previously, in Eurotrash.

"Who voted Prinz in? (who, who who who)" (to the tune of "Who let the dogs out?")

Yes, although I'm not sure that merely being the senior scientist present at her hatching really counts as being "Daddy."

Oh, and by the way, Hope Solo will never ever win this award. Never ever.

I would sat Marta or Prinz will win it because their name is fashionable.
Grings would be a good choice considering what she has achieved in 2009.

Who needs FIFA awards? Inka Grings got the "women footballer of North Rhine-Westfalia" award today.

And here is another well-deserved award:
"Honorary captain of women's football in Westphalia" to Kerstin Stegemann.

It's the first time this lifetime award has been bestowed and may well remain the last time, says DFB . Stegemann is reported to have been moved and almost speechless.

Well that's done it then, that's the one additional honor she needed to tip the balance in her favor. Surely she's now the leading candidate...

And how does her daddy there feel about it?

She also scored two goals today, whereas BP's match was cancelled. (And Laudehr, who also made the FIFA top 10, got sent off for complaining.)

Kelly upped the stakes with the 'I battled through a big trough of shit' to get to where I am today, story. Which I presume people are politely ignoring but I think she deserves more than a little credit for sticking in and, despite having knees made of glass, getting to where she is today. Wherever that is, at the mo.
What tale of humanity in distress will the other four be able to produce before Zurich next week?

Here if you haven't already seen it.

Meanwhile, over in Eurotrash, we're even discussing a pic from that very article. As IF we'd ignore anything like that .

I never knew drinking was involved, but with some of the back stories she's mentioned in previous interviews, I had thought something like that happened. I remember trying to follow what was happening with her after WUSA. Because she and Rags (speaking of glass knees) both had some truly horrible streaks of luck when they were here. My heart broke for both of them.

I'm sure they'll trot out footage of Marta visiting Brazil.

Sharing a house with a translator is so last year. The hip kids share with a sponsor.

I suggest they go another way, and produce instead lively and entertaining pamphlets; short, so as not to tax the brains of the judges too much, and so lightweight as to require only a single hand for reading. They could relate an amusing anecdote from their life, for instance. Oh, hmm, who has an amusing anecdote...

I forgot to mention, by the way, that I saw Cristiane play the other night when I watched the second half of Brazil-China, and that I was pretty impressed with her skills and cold-bloodedness on the ball. She wasn't perfect. She had the empty goal in front of her and missed it. But she was pretty good. As was Marta. What impressed me particularly in those Brazilians was their enormous breakaway speed compared to the Chinese. Then again, they won only 3-0, and one of those was a penalty, so it wasn't as if they were heads and shoulders over everyone else, and many of their chances came from counterattacks. Should either of those two get the award, if it was based solely on that match? I'm not sure.

My perception may have been a bit tainted by the fact that it was literally the middle of the night and I really should have been in bed though.

Good thing you didn't watch the first half then, because Cristiane's performance was simply dreadful. She was hogging the ball like crazy and ruined every play she was involved in. Luckily for Brazil, she redeemed herself afterwards.

The missed goal that you mentioned appears in this video:

So how come nobody's mentioning the terror that awaits us within a matter of hours? It is, of course, time for the Player of the Year extravanganza, which will be webcast live from 8pm CET here. And don't forget the women's press conference from 3pm CET- an event which has previously brought us entertainment like this:

Should we take bets on how many times the P'w'of will be playing "for my country" today?

Oh, and Inka Grings will be accompanied by her coach and her mother.

I'm making the assumption that they aren't one in the same person? Though you never know around here. ;)

Only if we also bet on how many times it'll be "this country of England" too.

She said "coach and mother", not "coach and lover".

Where are they hiding the effing press conference?

EDIT: Piss up + brewery. Cretins . ETA for your live stream now 3.30pm CET, here.

Right, I'm going with four. I think she'll skip "this country of England" this time.

I seem to have gotten online just in time to see the press conference. And neither of the Germans are there.

(and can I just say that microsoft updates that wreck havoc on all my preference and appearance settings annoy the crap out of me)

So, the press conference clip that is online isn't that interesting. No one asked Smith a question (except the first question the host asked everyone).
