Interesting assignments for SuperLiga. The first few were well-known names from CONCACAF WCQ and Gold Cup. I've never heard of the most recent referees. Took some research even to match them up with their countries: GASPAR MOLINA - HONDURAS CEDRAS SANCHEZ - COSTA RICA THOMAS - JAMAICA RODRIGUEZ DE LA ROSA - PANAMA Unless I've missed something, none of these guys have ever had big international matches. They've served their senior compatriots as fourth officials in qualifying, but that's about it.
Somewhat related, I never know with some of these Spanish names what the proper surname is. I could be sneaking some middle names in there. I know there's a lot of multi-word last names in the language for whatever reason (Luis Medina Cantelejo the most obvious example) but I don't know how to tell them apart.
Someone who knows better than me can give the appropriate technical description of what counts as a surname in Spanish culture. But, as far as referees go, I don't think you can go wrong if you just follow what's on the official FIFA list. The various federations fill out forms that FIFA sends them, so the surnames there are the ones that the referees in question want used. Since you brought up LMC, it's probably best to use him as an example: Benito Armando Archundia Téllez is the full name of the Mexican referee we know as "Benito ARCHUNDIA." Whereas LMC is known as "Luis Medina Cantalejo," whereby "MEDINA CANTALEJO" is his surname in the eyes of UEFA and FIFA. I might be wrong and am welcome to be corrected, but I think that if the Archundia followed the same standard that Medina Cantalejo did, then his name would be listed as "ARCUNDIA TELLEZ" with CONCACAF and FIFA (which, I note, it sometimes is in press reports). I think this is a question of "to each his own." (as an aside, I've heard Archundia goes by "Armando" as his first name... which either confuses my whole example or is the equivalent of the Anglo- situation where a person uses his first initial and middle name)
They are First Name(s), Paternal Last Name, Maternal Last Name So Juan Garcia Lopez's last name as we know it is "Garcia." If he marries Cristina Mendoza Medina whe would by Cristina Mendoza Medina de Garcia. Their son Pablo would be Pablo Garcia Mendoza. This is not universal. When I lived in Argentina I rarely saw anyone use the maternal last name. The family would be: Juan Garcia, Cristina Mendoza de Garcia, and Pablo Garcia. I suspect it would be this way in Uruguay. One last complicating factor: many people have multiple first names.
RADFORD, I believe has been doing MLS reserves and WPS matches. He's a 1'st year National Referee. Last year he had the U19B Region 4 center as a national candidate. Believe they are grooming him for the future.
FIFA lists Jose MOLINA, Ricardo CERDAS SANCHEZ, and Luis RODRIGUEZ DE LA ROSA so I guess 2 out of 3 ain't bad. ^_^ On the AR side, we have Hairo FUENTES and Juan RODAS so not as good.
Unlike my erroneous posting last week, this ACTUALLY IS week 16 for MLS! Real Salt Lake v. San Jose - KENNEDY / ROCKWELL / BORIA / PLOEGER Columbus v. D.C. United - TOLEDO / STRICKLAND / DITTMAR / LUNDQVIST Colorado v. Chicago - GONZALEZ / GANSNER / VASOLI / CHOUAF Dallas v. New York - STOTT / TAYLOR / BORNE / ANNO Los Angeles v. New England - GEIGER / GARNER / MONJE / MARISCAL
So Toledo is technically on international duty as a reserve official at the Gold Cup, yet he still gets assigned to a domestic league match tonight. Interesting move--I wonder what CONCACAF thinks of it. Are Vaughn and Marrufo going to be available domestically during the tournament?
When all of the referees in Toledo's group passed the fitness test he was released from the Gold Cup, so he is no longer on International duty. Marrufo and Vaughn will not be available for MLS until they are released from the Gold Cup.
Week 17! Seattle v. Houston - GEIGER / ROCKWELL / MONJE / WILEY Colorado v. Dallas - REYES / STRICKLAND / SCOTT / CHOUAF San Jose v. Toronto - OKULAJA / TOVAR / BRAGG / HERNANDEZ The other half of the previews should be posted pretty soon.
Chicago Fire v. Columbus Crew - MOODY / BELLEAU / MANIKOWSKI / KENNEDY Chivas USA v. Los Angeles - SALAZAR / SUPPLE / BARKEY / JURISEVIC
Kennedy in the middle of the Chicago game. Not sure if that's a change or if MLSnet had it down initially as a mistake. I know Kennedy is from Illinois--does he normally do middles for Fire matches?
Turns out that Kennedy is in the middle for this match, which means that Moody is probably the fourth. Not sure what caused the switch, but it might be because Moody's last MLS match involved Chicago and they generally try to avoid doing two in a row with the same team.
