The NBC Olympics website is asking people to vote for their 3 favorite videos among 30 offered in the competition. http://www.nbcolympics.com/nbcmoments/ According to the site, the results will be known on July 21st. The women's team that competed in 1996 is the only soccer entry. One thing that does bother me is that the Opening Ceremony from 2008 is among the 30 but not the one from 1992, with the arrow in flames lighting the torch. Still, whatever. Anyhoo, just letting people know what's up. At least a few more people can put their votes for the ladies of '96.
They don't have the "magnificent seven" aka the US women's gymnastics team via 96 games on this list? That to me was the number one for me since it was the only thing I remember watching on primetime. I never got a chance to know the US women's soccer team until the 1999 world cup. I used to think it was my fault until I watched that documentary "dare to dream" then I found out they never even aired a soccer game live in 1996...
Am I being stupid? I can't seem to drag any video in any of the three voting slots. (I'm on Firefox) Anyway, agree that magnificent seven definitely deserve to be on the list; I also wasn't award of the '96 team (though I'll probably vote for it anyway) X-D. Then, just to fill out the third (not necessarily bronze) slot.... May-Treanor/Walsh '08, Wilkinson '00, or opening ceremony '08... hmm....
If you click on the video to start, it will offer you the chance to select it. Of course most of my favorites are ABC videos...
This is pretty ironic considering how little of the soccer tournaments actually got aired in the United States in 1996.
Wow, I can't imagine what that was like. More details, please. For some reason, (I can't even remember why) I totally missed the fact that soccer was played at those Olympics.
Well, in your defense, it was the first time there was women's soccer at the Olympics, and none of the matches were shown on broadcast television. I don't have much recollection of it, either, but I didn't really start getting interested until 1999.
You can a feel of what it was like by watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPiGBSl64g0&feature=relmfu The segment you're looking for starts at 3:47. I wish they put in more footage from that time but you can still get some idea.
