So I am going to Uruguay in June, and I booked a flight from farecompare.com and it was really cheap. $700. A normal flight to Uruguay costs more than $1000. If its direct like $1300. The thing is that the layover is really long. Around 12 hours. From night to morning. Im 17 and I will be traveling with my 13 year old brother. What is there to do in Brasilia? I know its going to be nighttime, but we might want to tour the city. Bless me with your answers Brazucas
Well, the layover at night is too bad, bc Brasilia is a much more pleasant city during the day. In terms of site-seeing, obviously, you must see the Planalto -- the "Great Mall" of Brasilia - -like in Washington DC with all the capital buildings and stuff. It's all very nicely illuminated at night and I'm sure you could flag down a cab driver to show you it and take some pictures. As for other things, unfortunately, Brasilia is a very de-centralized city with many little strips of shops which typically service a residential neighborhood. None of them are particularly note-worthy. I do recommend trying out Pizzeria Dom Bosco if you have the chance. It's considered a culinary institution in Brasilia. A hole in the wall pizza slice joint. They're a bit different than what you're used too -- only plain slices and with a different type of flour mixture (it's more doughy) but the pizza is amazing and I often get cravings. It's standing room only but I think a fun experience bc it's a "locals only" place. My other recommendation would be just to hit up one of the main shopping centers. Brasilia, unfortunately, is very similar to your typical suburban sprawl cities so the malls are typically quite nice. Some are by the artificial lake and well, Brazilian malls are pretty nice from a tourist's perspective. Hope this helps! If your layover was during the day, I would be able to give you some better suggestions!
Yeah. My dad booked the trip so I couldn't look at the details. I would've if I had the chance. Thanks for the info man. I really appreciate it. The "National Mall" kind of thing seems interesting and something we might check out. How is Brasilia safety wise at night? Im 17 and my brother is 13. Do you think its safe for two Uruguayan-American tourists to be running around town at night? Would anything happen with the cab driver? My mom is saying that they might kidnapp us, etc., but I think she's just a freak. We've been to Brazil plenty of times, and my parents were in Brasilia 20 years ago, but 20 years is a long time. Also, any hotels inside or near the airport? Cause we might just rent a room and sleep. Thanks in advance!
So,at night things get pretty slow here. If you stick to this central area of the city (the government buildings) I doubt anything would happen to you during your tour. I need to mention that this part of the city gets completely deserted after 8~9PM (everyone go back home) though so I think it's understandable if people feel unsafe. The shopping centers like leonidas mentioned are a decent place to go and spend some time,if you want suggestions try Pier 21 (it's near the lake). Unfortunately the hotel inside the airport isn't finished yet (I'm not even sure if they started to build it) and the airport here is close to pretty much nothing. The best hotels are located at the "Setor Hoteleiro" (yeah,"Hotels Sector").
Wow. So I guess its either the shopping center (what time does it close), a cab to a hotel (dont want to spend too much as that defeats the purpose of the cheap flight), or just chilling at the airport for 12 hours.
get a rotten egg and some tomatoes, and throw them at Dilma Rousseff... or Lula (if he is around Brasilia, he is more in São Paulo these days) or José Sarney...
Your not joking about the malls in Brasil, When I would go and visit my friend in Volta Redonda, RJ she took me to see the local club Volta Redonda stadium it was not bad looking she also took me to the local mall their it was nice I must say I can't remember if it was three levels or two but I remember eating at a pizza place that was in the food court of the mall and had a cold beer to wash it down with. It's a very industrial City. She also took me to Angre Dos Reis very nice beaches and little islands I ate the chunks of meat on skewers mmm those were so good at the beach. We took a water taxi to one of the little islands it was great! Also tried the fried bread with Frango and cheese in it I forget what you call those. I have also been to the mall del Sol in Copacabana, RJ that is a nice mall too real hot looking girls working their they all mostly look like models.

Coxinha? (little thigh) I live in Brasilia and the city is pretty dead at night. I don't think you'll have any safety problems with the taxi driver. Never heard of it around here. Also, the taxi fare is REALLY expensive, but you have no other option at night and without knowledge of the city. Suggestions: 1 - Taxi tour over the "Eixo Monumental". That's the main axis of the airplane, which is the shape of Brasilia. You get to see the TV Tower, the Congress, the ministries and stuff. 2 - Go to "Pontão" near the lake. It's a very nice place with restaurants, where you can walk by the water. It's completely safe there. 3 - Don't forget to check google maps to understand the city's layout. It's really unique. There are no hotels near the airport.
