El jueves 11 de noviembre se realizará el "sorteo" de los 3 grupos de la Copa América, en La Plata.

    http://www.conmebol.com/conmebol/activeCompetition.html?x=35&sub=2&id=16789&type=1

    One question:
If Japan somehow won this tournament would they qualify for the confederations cup?

(And why does this conditional clause type II sound so strange to me...)

    No.

The runner up would go to the confed cup

Just like the runner up of the Libertadores would go the the CWC if a Mexican team ever won it

Invitees are not eligible to qualify for the Confederations Cup. Japan will have their chance in Asia Cup this January.

Brazil are automaticallly qualified for the Confederations Cup as host.

Now, let's imagine a scenario in which the semifinalists are Brazil, Japan, Mexico, and any other team. The 'other' team would automatically qualify for Confederations even if they place 4th in Copa America.

    What is that?

This is why I think these tournaments are not well organized... In the Copa Libertadores, similar situation, if the Mexican team had won the Libertadores, they would not automatically qualify for the Club World Cup - so Internacional of Brazil already qualified for the world cup ... Inter won anyway, so the crazy situation did not happen.... LOL

It makes sense to have invitees for the Copa America, because 10 isn't exactly the perfect number for a tournament. On the other hand 12 isn't that much better.

But I don't understand why they invite teams for the Libertadores.
