You have too much faith on the African teams. They are all good, but not great teams. The coaching problems that Nigeria and Ivory Coast are facing right now does not help them out either. Three out of five of these teams advancing to round is a good possibility, but five out of five is just not going to happen.

I'll give you Cote d'Ivoire, but I did post it when TO THE BEST OF EVERYONE'S KNOWLEDGE HIDDINK WAS COACH. And once that was announced EVERYONE had Cote d'Ivoire pipping Portugal. But the announcement was premature...

Nigeria has South Korea and Greece. Greece got utterly thrashed by Senegal. It was disgraceful, cuz a fairer result would be 6:0 or 7:0. If Greece get a single point I'll be in awe. So its a contest between South Korea and Nigeria. I'm betting on Nigeria. Besides... you yourself chose Nigeria... So? What exactly is your issue? (p.s. Nigeria no longer has coaching issues...)

4 or 5 out of 6. You forgot about Algieria.
I'm withholding from having an opinion on Ghana until I see the squad.
I may change my opinion on Nigeria after the first test matches with the new coach.
Plus I'm backtracking on Cote d'Ivoire (50/50 between Portugal and Cote d'Ivoire, but that still depends on how quick they get a coach).

So I have 3 out of 6 plus 2 noncommitals.

Besides Africa has had appauling WC after WC. So this time I see a change around. Plus the refs will finally get off African teams backs (vide 1998 or 1982).

I see a Brazil beating Spain in the finals. I actually think Spain may be the better team, but I'm not one to look for history to be broken (No European team has everyone a WC not played in Europe).

Many of you are not including South Africa in second round (exception Maruti, Jaime Chile, Fabio)? Remember the importance of fan pressure and the refereeing. Host nations have always progressed to the second round, including:
Japan and South Korea 2002 (scandalous refereeing)
    USA 94
    Mexico 86
    Mexico 70
    Chile 62
    Sweden 58 (reached final)
    Switzerland 54

Lets get over it. South Africa will reach the second round. I assume Mexico and Uruguay will see some surprising referee decisions in their matches with the host.

I really think you should however note that both Japan and Korea advanced from their group phase FAIR AND SQUARE. Korea i.e. thrashed Poland and then beat a 9-man Portugal (but the truth is all cards for Portugal were well deserved).

jcp97: Not a single African team in the second round in an African World Cup??? Not likely... even if FIFA had to push an African team with the most corrupt referee in existence.
