My initial quick thoughts: The return of Ubiparipovic allowed the team back to its favoured 4-3-3 and allowed Oliver to return to his favoured LW position. Add an inspired Phil Davies at RW and the great interchange passing and hard work from all 11 Fury players on the pitch and we ended up with the greatest day in our very young OFFC history.

After a whirlwind start to the season, the players will finally go back to the regular routine of the one match per week. It was difficult to even keep up as a supporter, so I don't even know what the players must have gone through. Missing Oliver through fatigue (or injury) and Ryan through a warm-up injury meant we were missing our most steady attacking and midfield presence, and it clearly showed in Atlanta in the 2nd half. The injury bug struck again with Ryan, Haworth and Mayard all getting injured during the day.

NASL Matchday 4 at Atlanta - 2-1

Overall - I watched the game again, and went through the game tape as best as I could to draw some more specific observations on the game at Atlanta. Fatigue was a factor for the midfield, for sure, but I think that losing Ryan to injury in the warmups is what really sunk us this game. If there are two players that so far have shown themselves to be irreplacable, it has been Ubiparipovic and Ryan. Ubiparipovic was also not very visible at many stretches of the 2nd half, and that also contributed to our lack of offensive showing in the middle of the 2nd half.

GK and D - Not great performances from any of the D vs. Atlanta

Gorrick made some nice saves, but also showed some hesitancies on the crosses. Our fullbacks had a rough game; Soria was tormented by Sandoval all game long while he played LB, especially in the 1st half. Soria played better as a LW than as a LB. Fresenga had a game to forget on both ends of the field, hope he bounces back in his next showing. Him and Davies need to work together more often if they are to succeed together on the right flank. Fresenga did make himself available best he could though.

Trafford continues to lose out on too many aerial duels as a CB, and was not comfortable with the ball at all as a LB later on. On the first goal, his mark ghosted away from him for the goal, and on the second goal, passed the ball away that led to their counter. Almost gave away a rash penalty in the 2nd half. Made some nice tackles though. Beckie though was ultimately responsible for both goals, marking a player he should not be marking for the first goal, and losing out on the header for the second goal. Did make 2 brave blocks that saved us from further goals though.

Jarun was just okay in the 10 minutes he played as a CB but more effective as a wrecking ball as a CF. Caceros looked good in the 10 minutes he played, and he or Beckie should be considered a possible candidate to come in for Ryan at DM if he and Paterson are still missing for this Saturday.

M - Where we really lost the game

Donatelli tried, but was not an able fill-in for Ryan as a DM. Made 2 nice sliding tackles, but was slow and often over-run and not as tidy as Ryan in his control or distribution. Also, did not help in marking on the 1st goal, when he should have at least been in the penalty area to mark the player that Beckie was marking. He was fantastic vs. Carolina in the RCM role, which seems his more natural role.

Elias tried hard, and that's very appreciated, and fashioned a great chance in the first 10 minutes. However, the number of misplaced passes was too high, and his control was not good enough for a RCM as he often got crowded out. He was also not strong enough to make the defensive plays in midfield. I liked his energy though, and I wonder how he would play as a LW or a RW.

Ubiparipovic was the offensive spark as usual, and always did something positive with the ball. However, he was invisible in the middle of the 2nd half, when we needed him the most. He was visible again at the end and helped contribute to the brief insurgency from the Fury. Also, needs to help out more in defensive work.

F - Looked bright and positive, but needs more aggression

Haworth looked positive at LW, getting away from his opponents easily to hold up the ball. Showed willingness to take on players too, which is always needed.

Dantas was the best player for Ottawa on Saturday, ran hard, held up the ball well, fashioned some chances. He needs to continue to get his teammates more involved though, and of course, take his chances.

Davies was the 2nd best player for Ottawa, very technical, always did something intelligent with his passing or his technique. I don't know if I've ever seen him take on a fullback 1 on 1 and beat him, though, so I would like to see more aggression from him. If Ubiparipovic is ever injured again, having Davies as the LCM in the 4-3-3 instead of Oliver as an CAM in a 4-2-3-1 would be something I think might work. For future games in the season, seeing Davies next to Ubi in a RCM role I think would be intriguing as well.

Mayard seemed to take an injury to his hip, hope he recovers quickly. I liked his energy in the season opener, but I haven't seen him beating many players from LW yet. I'd be curious to see him cut in from RW instead.

GK and D:

Incredible save from Gorrick to preserve the draw around the 80th minute mark. Has shown some great reflexes in recent weeks.

Soria was dynamite all game, making great tackles and overlaps, and kick-starting the best move of the game, the tic tac toe between him, Donatelli and Ubiparipovic for the chance to win the game near the end. Beckie was solid during the game, making a few overlaps as well and making good tackles throughout. Did get beat a few times by the winger though.

Trafford was calm and had nice clearances, but I found him coming too far up without winning his tackles several times during the game, leaving a hole in the center of the defense. Was too far up and could not make the header in the play that led to the PK goal, and was caught ball-watching on Hristov's chance on the cross that led to Gorrick's super-save. Jarun was the opposite, overtly excited and with poor clearances throughout the game, but he easily led the team in made tackles and clearances, always getting stuck in. Was lucky to get a yellow card on the blatant pull for the PK, and should have cleared the ball on the play.

M:

Ubi was pulling the strings again and has the technique to make some fantastic passes. Beautiful through passes throughout the game, and when they work, they lead to dangerous chances. His inside pass to Haworth led to the chance that led to our PK, and his final pass released Soria on the chance to win late-game. He also played good D, which is important for a LCM.

Donatelli was solid throughout the game. Very involved in the 1st half, less so in the 2nd half, and I think he could play better D, but kept the play moving whenever needed, and his one-touch pass to Ubi that led to Soria's chance was quite nice. Scored the goal to tie the game, being at the right place at the right time.

Ryan's presence was incredibly welcome, and it was very noticeable compared to the game vs. Atlanta. Very calm even when surrounded by opponents, wins the ball often with great positioning and awareness, and his drag-backs to create space is always pleasant to see. Did give away the ball a bit more than would have liked to see. Nice CKs from the right side for the assist.

Congrats to Eustaquio on his debut!

F:

Oliver had a nice penalty attempt that was saved spectacularly by Pickens on to the post. Other than that, his only telling contribution was a bicycle karate kick to Sanfilippo. Will chalk this performance down to injury, hope to see the dynamic version of him for next game.

Dantas worked very hard, and was very industrial. Linked to his teammates well, and got right in the face of Pickens on the CK that led to the goal. I can't remember a signature moment in the penalty area though, and he will have to bring his presence into the box as well.

Haworth was hard-working on the RW, but simply turned on beast mode when he got onto the LW, and then onto ST. Watching him charge into the defenders and winning the ball in the last 15 minutes was a joy to watch. I think he might push again for a starting spot next week on the LW, based on the 2nd half performance. Soria's chance at the end of the game was created by Haworth hustling for the ball and winning it from the defender near the corner flag. His passing and linking up with the rest of the team needs a bit more work though.

Davies was solid and comfortable on the RW, as always. The announcer said he had a slight injury pre-game, though I didn't hear of that anywhere else.

Elias came in on the LW when he came on, and it was a pleasure to see. His skill-set definitely makes him a more natural winger than a CM, with his high-energy and acceleration.

 

NASL Matchday 6 vs Indy Eleven

Battle of the expansions, thank god there is no relegation in the league, or this game would have been HUGE Still, a huge matter of pride at stake, with both clubs at or near the bottom of the standings, and I believe our team focused more on building up the squad compared to Indy, I honestly believe that. I hope we come away snatching at least a draw, if not a win, at Indy.

May 17, 2014 – Indy Eleven vs Ottawa Fury FC – 2-4 W

Goal – Donatelli, Jarun, Donatelli, Oliver; Assist – Dantas, Ryan, Unassisted, Haworth

Yessssss. Sorry, expansion cousins, but we got this one. A fantastic away victory, where we once again showed our full attacking potential. If I could draw similarities between this game and the Carolina 4-0, it would be that Donatelli and Ryan were on their game to contribute to the midfield play next to Ubiparipovic.

GK and D

Gorrick had a decent game, assuming control of his area for the most part, but could have had a chance to save the 2nd goal.

Soria was kept busy defensively and did not get to do his usual forays. Does get beat on headers understandably. The quietest of his performances so far this season.

Beckie continued to work hard, as one of the most defensively aware player on the team, and took a knock to his head in the 2nd half. The medical staff should treat him with caution with any concussion symptoms, as he looked shaken up again. Did make the over-confident mis-pass that led to the counter for Indy’s 2nd goal.

Trafford gave up the penalty on a harsh call from the ref, but was a steady presence for most of the game. I would still like to see more energy from him and more headers won.

Jarun was all over the penalty area, making clearances left and right. Did get beat on the long ball over the top on Indy’s 2nd goal. Nice run to score his goal, and was generally active in his towering way. Also let his marker slip as an Indy striker nearly scored their 3rd goal on a header from a throw-in.

M

Ubiparipovic was quiet this game for the most part, and you could sense his frustration at himself when he was subbed off at the end. However, he rarely lost the ball and made the play move along continuously. Active on D as well.

Ryan’s long diagonal balls were what separated Ottawa from Indy. They were incredibly accurate and freed up a winger for a 1 on 1 situation right away, and his crosses had a certain curl and zip to them as well. I believe his diagonal balls/crosses were what initiated the 2nd, 3rd and 4th goals. Does give up the ball time to time in tight situations.

Donatelli’s 1st half was simply flawless, every single touch he had was positive in some way. The best 45 minutes from any Ottawa player I think I have seen yet. His calm drags/turns onto his left foot was the other thing that separated Ottawa from Indy. His 2nd half was good as well, silky smooth.

Eustaquio continues to torment announcers and podcasters with his last name. I think it’s pretty easy to announce though, but maybe I’m doing it wrong. EWW-S-TA-QUI-O, anyone?

F

Oliver had a quiet 1st half, but had some nice touches and backheels in the 2nd half, and was brave enough to get in front of the defender on the last goal.

Dantas was bustling as always, and had some of the best link-up/hold-up play from him this season. His hard work would have deserved a goal.

Haworth showed buzz and energy again, though he doesn’t get to shoulder-barge as much when playing on the RW. He usually tries to beat the D with speed onto his right, but he could try turning onto his left foot and crossing or passing with the weaker foot, as Donatelli did on his two goals. Great persistence throughout the game led to the assist for the killer goal.

Davies was more subdued than his usual performances. I’ve noted before that he has some of the best technique on the team, but it’s harder to see in a shorter burst of time.

Maykon came on to get his legs moving again for the first time in a few weeks. We may perhaps see him in more of a LW position more, as Soria has certainly staked his claim to compete with Maykon for the LB spot.

 

NASL 2014 Matchday 7 – Ottawa Fury FC vs. San Antonio Preview

May 24, 2014 – Ottawa Fury FC vs. San Antonio Preview

This will be a great opportunity for others in the back 4 to step up in Jarun’s absence with international duty. Our midfield will have to be on their top form again to break down San Antonio’s resolute D, and this will probably be a low-scoring game, based on the Scorpions’ results so far. Will serve as a great dessert after the main course that is the Champions League final.
