It's not a pure adaptation of the movie but more another story inhabiting the same universe.

Watched the first episode last night. Looks like something I could get into. Billy Bob Thornton's character is great.

    The pilot was pretty good.

Actually, the concept of a Fargo TV series is quietly brilliant.

    I think it's going to be 10 episodes, so it's more of a mini-series than a series.

I hope it's gonna have a limited run. I mean, there were a lot of people killed last night if not.

I always love Colin Hanks in everything I've seen him in.

As I understand it, the idea is to go the True Detective route.
Each new season will feature a new cast, but the same basic concept.
So I'm guessing that means the same tone and basic location, but a different story.

I only know Hanks from a handful of things (his small part in Band of Brothers, that serial killer movie he did the name of which now escapes me). I do agree that he really impressed in the pilot. Doubly so considering his scene was relatively short.

Just watched it myself. I think the show did a really great job taking the elements that made Fargo the movie great, but without just aping them in really obvious ways.

I thought the young female cop and her mentor were great. The show was able to really convey her admiration of him and her resolve to avenge his death without spelling it out bluntly.

And the paint cans, my god. Well done.

The young cop is indeed good (and her eagerness to impress her boss was endearing!) but she seems like a huge Frances McDormand stand-in.
You'd almost believe this could be a prequel about the time before she became police chief!

The last scene with BBT and Colin Hanks was a bit Chigurh-esque.

    I liked the second episode.
Though some of the stuff felt a bit derivative.
Lester in his empty home reminded me a bit of Nicholson in "About Schmidt".
The two goons from Fargo, where one of them is deaf and the other interprets for him is something I recall from "Calander girl".
Still digging BBTs sinister yet funny vibes.

Second ep was pretty good. I'll probably keep watching. Billy Bob still has the best scenes. His character is well-written.

Agree. The second episode was better than the first one. Still not great, but worth continuing to watch...

Another very entertaining episode, this is an hour that just flies by. :)

I loved Lesters visit to the widow Hess, Molly's scene at the diner with Gus and his daughter, Molly's earlier restaurant scene with her friend :D, the scene with BBT and the trainer in the closet/storage room.

I've watched the first two episodes from here in the UK and have enjoyed both more than I expected to. However it has taken the two full episodes for me to start to come to terms with Martin Freeman in the Lester role. Still he has grown into it quicker than I expected after watching the 1st episode.

Bump here. The miniseries has been excellent. So far I like it more than True Detective. Billy Bob is basically Chigurh.

I loved how Malvo instantly morphed into that schlemiel persona the second he walked into the police station. :)

In terms of Lester's telltale heart type wound, I understand its dramatic function. But it doesn't make much sense for him to leave it untreated. Why couldn't he just drive four towns over and have another doctor treat it? He could always just claim it was a hunting accident, which is a plausible enough explanation.

    Another good episode. :)

A question: what did Gus' neighbor say to Malvo after Malvo threatened him and his family?

I looked online, most people seem to agree he was calling Malvo the Hebrew word for demon.

This episode got very A Serious Man-y. Which I enjoyed. The neighbor telling the parable was shot almost exactly like the sequence about the goy's teeth in A Serious Man.

I love the character of Molly-- well acted, too.

    Agreed about Molly.

Actually, this was the first episode where I thought the scenes with Lester were the weakest part.
