NYCFC to play 3 years in Yankee Stadium... http://www.socceramerica.com/articl...ree-seasons-at-yankee-stad.html?edition=11633
Tonight's game postponed due to rain. It will be made up Wednesday as part of a split day-night doubleheader. Francisco Cervelli moved from the 15-day to 60-day DL. Yanks have called up catcher John Ryan Murphy. He was batting .192 (5-for 26) at Scranton. Carlos Beltran named A.L. Player of the Week. He hit .423 (11-for-26) with 4 doubles, 3 homers, 6 RBIs and a .923 slugging percentage. vs. Chicago Cubs (4-8) at Yankee Stadium Wed.- Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 3.21) vs. Jason Hammel (2-0, 2.63); 1:05 on YES Wed.- Michael Pinada (1-1, 1.50) vs. Travis Wood (0-1, 2.92); 7:05 on WWOR, MLBN (all times Eastern) A.L. The Dead Tree edition of the Scranton paper told me they also called up Scott Sizemore, who is .344 in ten games at AAA. EDIT: A more recent update says he's starting at third... http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/news/a...tebook_id=72254750&vkey=notebook_nyy&c_id=nyy NEW YORK -- Scott Sizemore held the lineup card in his hands for a few extra beats at his Yankee Stadium locker on Wednesday, scanning the Yankees' lineup and finding his name in the No. 9 spot, playing third base in the opener of a day-night twin bill. After two reconstructive left knee surgeries and some doubts about his future in baseball, Sizemore said that it was "absolutely" significant to have that tangible reward of all the hard work he put in during his rehabilitation. "The last two years have been extremely tough, a grueling two years of rehab," Sizemore said. "To get a chance to be under the lights again, it's a rewarding feeling. "... Maybe best case would have been to make it out of spring, but I had a lot to prove and that I was healthy and all that good stuff. To get a chance this early in the year is great." Sizemore, 29, will provide manager Joe Girardi with more infield versatility. Sizemore has played second and third base in the big leagues with the Tigers and Athletics, and he said that he is about 95 percent back to his expected range and agility.
Masahiro Tanaka (2-0, 2.05) continued his brilliant pitching this afternoon -- 8 innings, striking out 10, allowing just 2 bunt(!) singles, a walk and no runs. He threw 107 pitches and Joe Girardi decided to bring in Shawn Kelley to close out the 9th for his 4th save since becoming the closer in David Robertson's absence. Tanaka has now gone 22 innings with 28 strikeouts and 2 walks. Quite a ratio! Carlos Beltran belted his 4th homer of the season, his 3rd in 3 games. Hiroki Kuroda was pulled in the 6th with a 4-3 lead and then the roof fell in. Yankee relievers hadn't given up a run in 15 1/3 innings but blew it big time last night. The Rays scored 8 in the last 2 innings. Adam Warren took the loss. Cesar Cabral was a total disaster, hitting 3 batters -- plus throwing a wild pitch and allowing 3 singles. He got ejected from the game and was promptly designated for assignment by the Yanks afterwards. Wow, what a weekend. Hell, even Dean Anna got to pitch! I guess Rays-Yankees matchups are going to be wild and woolly affairs this season. The Yankees put Ivan Nova on the 15-day DL with an elbow ligament tear. His season is likely over and he may be headed for Tommy John surgery. Scott Sizemore shipped to Scranton with pitcher Matt Daley. Mark Teixeira returned and went 2-for-6 yesterday. Righty Preston Claiborne (0-0, 1.50) up from Scranton. You're absolutely correct. Time for CC to move over. Tonight's gonna be real interesting. Not just because of Tanaka, but it's Jacoby's return to Fenway. Can't wait. David Robertson comes off the DL. Ells was a good guy and, when healthy, was a big part of the Sox. Won two rings. I got no probs with JE heading south to The Stadium. Discussions about him are pretty much quieted down. It's over and we've moved on. This sparring on SOSH says it all: "Plympton91, on 21 Apr 2014 - 7:09 PM, said: Those who do not learn the correct lessons from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them. The less(on) of Crawford, Lackey, Gonzalez, and Beckett shouldn't be, "Never pay market value for a superstar." To which Glenhoffmania replied: "This is insanity. You wanted Boston to outbid NY and give out the biggest contract since Manny and the highest AAV in their history? For Ellsbury? It's a shame that this team hasn't accomplished anything in a generation so they need to make reactionary moves to try to become relevant" The rap sheet on Ells to date: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=4727&position=OF#fieldingadvanced
Fine "homecoming" for Ellsbury last night -- a triple and 2-run double. Tanaka went 7 1/3 with 7 strikeouts and no walks. Beltran knocked out his 5th homer. Michael Pinada has been suspended for 10 games, beginning tonight (April 24). He will be eligible to pitch again on Monday, May 5. He has said he will not appeal.
I mentioned in another thread that a Yankee fan I know thinks the Yankees should suspend him for 10 more games for being blatant enough to guarantee getting caught.
I don't like a "language barrier" being used as an excuse for him not understanding -- as if NO didn't translate as NO the first time. And I don't like how Girardi keeps referring to him as a kid. He's a 25-year-old man who played a full season in Seattle three years ago and has been around for much of the time since then. He's not some teenager just off the boat. But from what I've been reading in the papers, there's a real lack of sophistication about this guy. He was even offered a translator by the Yankees when speaking to the media but declined.
Red Sox gave up 14 runs, 14 hits, 12 walks, committed 5 errors and threw 3 wild pitches last night! Teixeira with his first homer of the season. Ellsbury had 3 hits (2 doubles) and 3 RBIs. Solarte broke out of a mini-slump and produced 4 RBIs. Gardner and Roberts scored 4 times each. Yanks have taken 5 of 7 games from Boston so far. Fallout from the Pineda affair with the Yankee roster now down to only 24 players during his 10-game suspension. The main tragedy is Dean Anna getting shipped back to Scranton. What a shame after contributing so well. Preston Claiborne was sent down as well. Pitchers Shane Greene and Bruce Billings called up. David Phelps is expected to take Pineda's missed starts. Friday night's loss, in which the Yankees came back in the bottom of the 8th and 9th to tie the score and then had golden chances to win in the bottom of the 11th, 12th and 13th, is a game they may rue having thrown away at the end of the season. Forget all that nonsense about games this early not mattering as much as those in September. They all matter. That was a big defeat. (Derek Jeter went 0-for-7 for a new low in his career.)
