You can buy the first season on DVD: http://www.amazon.com/The-Americans-Season-Keri-Russell/dp/B00ECGHM5O
It is also available for streaming on Amazon Prime. I love this show. The little speech by Keri's Russell's character about the daughter being indoctrinated was priceless. I was also glad to see Margo Martindale was able to escape fart jokes for a couple weeks and come back for season 2.
Yeah, I'm already sick of paying for my outrageously high cable bill and paying for anything else on top of that is painful for us cheapsters. I don't think I've bought a DVD since the early 2000's and I can't see myself starting now.
thought this last episode was the best of the season so far. the interactions between philip and the mossad agent, elizabeth and martha, and philip and the phsyicist were all top notch.
... and the way Phillip was clearly struggling with what he had to do with the physicist guy in handing him over. It was also noticeable that everyone, including the Israelis on this occasion, are usually forced into what's normally called 'realpolitik' and have to accept the loss of the one guy the Russians want in exchange for the 1,500 ordinary Jews that want to leave Russia.
True... but this was back in the early 80's when they weren't quite so 'tight' with the Americans. Also, don't forget, the premise of this is that Mossad are working outside the knowledge of the FBA/CIA. In any event all he can give is a description which, AFAIK, they already have, albeit a rather dodgy one. They don't even know if he's still in the USA.
Apart from Stan, the official FBI stance is that the woman died from the GSW and the man was exfiltrated back to Russia.
It's amazing how this show can so seamlessly go from light & funny (the first Clark and Elizabeth scene in the kitchen and the picture of Ronald Reagan the aide and Lucille were staring at during sex) to very dark (the second Clark and Elizabeth scene and the scene where Lucille killed her asset/boyfriend).
Another great episode. Keri Russell is a waif, but she has a nice booty. Agent Stan is really lost. Richard Thomas as his boss has been fantastic in this series.
Not the greatest episode this season, but still enjoyable. I guess we sorta knew already that Lucia would die trying to kill Larik.
I thought she'd have just shot him and it be would him that was dead, denying them the chance to get inside contra-training base.
I honestly thought that Elizabeth would kill her during the mission to prevent her from doing something stupid. Of course, that became impossible when Larik was sent to Nicaragua.
Is it just me or are they ramping up the tension in this series? The stuff they're being asked to do is WAY more risky than it was before. I was surprised they agreed to let that guy at the end live... that seemed unlikely.
I agree, it didn't make much sense, even if they used it as a way to convey Philip's state of mind - and his tiredness of killing. It was a huge operational risk to let that guy live.
Particularly as he'd killed the other fella in the computer lab, for example. I suppose you could argue it was that that made him start to feel he was getting fed up but, even so, they're risking a lot leaving the guy alive like that.
yeah, when phillip was walking away, i expected to hear a gunshot behind him and see that elizabeth shot him anyway.
I could see Elizabeth going all dogmatic on him and telling him. "Phillip perhaps you need to return to Soviet Union. These decadent and bourgeois ways are affecting you operationally yes."
Well to be fair, Elizabeth spared a guy as well when they were stealing the propeller designs. She took a picture of one of his kids as an implied threat, but left him otherwise unharmed. It is interesting that she ordered Lucia to kill the senator's aide, but she herself left the sailor who got her Larik's file unharmed. Wouldn't they represent an equal risk in terms of leading back to them, should the theft be discovered?
BTW, it has been renewed for a third season, even though the ratings this year haven't been stellar. Although apparently it's one of the shows that is most watched on DVR delay.
I'd think it's a matter of the least risk though... if you kill someone that, in itself, means an investigation as well. The thing I find interesting is the number of people in the west that think OUR spies aren't like that. Er... I think they probably are, tbh.
