About as perfect a night as one could have hoped for weather-wise. Not a good sign that so much orange was visible. Without all the cars and games and the VW garage humming and the recliners and people hanging out over there, it just seems emptier than ever before. The Leidos shirt thing just looks kind of sad.
My son, who is 23, remarked at the NE game that the VW garage should be the site of a pre-game concert specifically designed to bring in the 21-30 age cohort. Good music, turn the "garage" into a bar and open the effing thing up about 2-3 hours before kickoff. I'm sure there are hoops to jump through for this, but it would be a good learning experience for the applicable intern.
Great idea. It might also convince some of the Lot 8 tailgaters to relocate inside the stadium so they don't wander in after the match has begun. (I could see from the quiet side that a number of fans arrived after Arnaud's 4th minute goal.)
Nah, what we need are some giant bobble headed characters having races at halftime! People LOVE those things! And smoke machines! Maybe some laser lights in them too! Blech.
I suggested they build bleacher stands there (similar to ones at USA-Germany last year), but that's a hard sell when you can barely sell half current lower bowl hehe
I heard the goal standing outside Gate B (which they had just closed) finishing my last beer. We had to stand there and debate whether just to stay outside (and perhaps help us score again), or whether to go in and risk it
Does anyone know why DCU does not play games at one of the colleges in DC insted of RFK at this point? Since it is obvious they will never sell it out anytime soon, maybe a 10,000-15,000 stadium would be a better fit. Cheaper rent, etc. Doesn't Howard have a field...Georgetown...American? Anything would be better at this point.
Howard - 7,086 and field turf American - can't find an attendance but this should tell you something Georgetown - 1,625 None of the stadiums are big enough...among other reasons I am sure.
Ludwig Field at Univ of Maryland has the area's largest capacity, IIRC, but even that is only ~ 7,500.
Eh, not screwed, but I think there is a chance if we lose vs. Columbus and then get smacked to shit by Dallas our attendance problems are here to stay. June/July and parts of August are the historical low points for MLS seasons after all.
We're doomed! RFK is going to be empty and the whole world will know that DC United cannot attract people!
Schedule doesn't help attendance again ... Reminds me of '12 when we had games bunched together and almost no home games in June/July ... Again there's a stretch in Aug./Sept. where we'll be playing 7 out of 9 on the road. Makes no sense. I thought one of the points of soccer specifics stadiums was to put a little more logic into the schedule ...
RFK is not a soccer specific stadium. It is a racoon sanctuary that sometimes hosts disrupting soccer matches. August/September is the predicted mating season and we don't want to disturb the racoons during mating season...
Plus the Eastern Stadium Racoon is an endangered species and disrupting the mating season is a violation of federal statute
Maybe The Don can buy this scheduling program. http://www.baltimoresun.com/health/bs-hs-baseball-scheduling-20140417,0,946335.story
