MMM Bellos is a great beer bar right next to Newark Penn. Manny and John run a great place there. Over 100 different beers from all over the world and some of the best pub fare I've ever had (make sure to ask for the specials). Can get crowded sometimes, but if you get there early you can get a table to sit down and eat. There is also a separate up stairs area where one of the supporters groups gathers.

Fernandez is my favorite rodizio place in the ironbound. Little closer to the stadium. Great food. Much bigger place with a big bar with lots of flat screens and a separate dining section as well.

I love beer. That sounds like a winner right there.

Manny (the Owner) is Portuguese. Ask him if he has any Portuguese beers in stock. If not, he almost always has something new he can recommend.

I'll second that on Bellos. We have been taking the train the last few times. Love it there. Great beer and food. Great prices too. Then the bus to game, can't beat it. My new favorite place.

It's my understanding that on the WEEKENDS during the 2014 season the PATH train will be out of service from the World Trade Center station to the Harrison station.

    Alternate routes from NYC:
You can still catch the PATH from 33rd st, 23rd st, 14th st, 9th st, and christopher st. Make sure to add some time to your trip though because the train will make a stop in Hoboken before moving on to Journal Square. At Journal Square you will need to transfer to a PATH train going the rest of the way to Harrison Station.

    http://www.panynj.gov/path/full-schedules.html

You can also use NJT and catch a train from New York Penn Station going to Newark Penn Station. This is a faster/easier way to go if you plan on grabbing a beer/food pregame and walking over with the supporters to the stadium (~15 min. walk).

    http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TripPlannerTo

Also Legends Bar (by the empire state building) has a cool deal where you pay $20 for a roundtrip bus ticket from the bar to the stadium. Busses leave 1.5 hours before kickoff and include beer on the bus!

Thanks for this info. Would have made my day get off to a pretty crappy start tomorrow had I not read this. Trains are going to be especially over-crowded now.

Hey Red Bull fans. I have some questions that I am sure have been answered in this thread, but I see it has been going on for almost 4 years. So, if you have the patience for a hick from TN I am going to just pose the questions instead of trying to figure it out by reading over 3.5 years of info for which I don't know what parts are still valid...

My wife and I are trying to plan a summer trip which may include going to the Red Bulls game at RBA on July 12th (7pm). We would be arriving to the RBA area pretty early in the morning. We would like to park "near" the stadium and leave our car there all day and take some sort of public transit into the city to do some tourist sight seeing then come back to RBA via public transit for the game. Keep in mind that I am completely ignorant about NYC area and don't know what all the abbreviations for the different transits mean.
    1. Can you park your car near the stadium for the entire day (with-in walking distance)?
      1. Any idea on cost for parking for 12 plus hours.
    2. What would be the best way to get to the city and back via public transit?
      1. We would also probably use public transit to get around the city.
      2. Can you buy a 1 day metropass and would that work to get to and from the stadium?

P.S. Don't hold the fact that my profile says I am a Galaxy fan against me. While I am a Galaxy fan I am more a fan of the league itself than a particular team. :)

Thanks in advance for any info you can pass on to this hick :)

I'm thinking that your best bet if you are staying in Manhattan is to take a NJ Transit train from New York Penn Station to Newark Penn Station and then take the 10 or 15 minute walk from the train station over the bridge into Harrison. The walk is very safe and you'll see lots of nice restaurants and they'll be plenty of other NYRB supporters taking the exact same walk.

You could park around NEWARK Penn Station. Sometimes you can find free street parking. If not, there are a lot of $10 lots.

From there you could take the PATH train from NEWARK Penn Station to the 33rd Street stop (last stop) in New York City. That would land you right near Macy's, the empire state building, and Times Square. It would also land you right on top of all the major subway lines if say for instance you wanted to go down to the World Trade Center (or wherever).

If you buy a METROCARD you can use that for all all transportation (PATH and subway). Just make sure to put enough money on it for you and your family. Subway rides are like $2.50 per person per ride. Ditto the PATH I believe.

On the way back to the stadium you could take the PATH from 33rd st., 23rd st., etc. (get a PATH map/app) and either go direct to the stadium (Harrison stop), or back to NEWARK Penn Station if you'd like to go back to your car real quick or grab something to eat (lots of good restaurants in that area - mostly spanish, brazillian, etc.).

The walk between NEWARK Penn Station and the stadium is about 15-20 minutes.

Allow 45 minutes via PATH from NEWARK Penn to 33rd St. NYC. It might not take that long, but sometimes it does.

If you have an idea of what your itinerary will be post it here and we can let you know if you've set aside enough time for everything, etc.

We would not be staying in Manhattan. We would just be driving into the area from the south for the day.

If you stand in the middle of the sidewalk to stare up at the tall buildings we will yell at you. Step to the side to do that and you'll be all good.

...actually that's a good rule for the subway too. Step to the side when you're trying to figure something out. New Yorkers are very helpful, but we live on the "New York minute". So if you get in our way you're gonna hear about it.

I will let you know if we finalize on our NYC tourist itinerary. As of right now we don't have that part completely planned out.

Follow up question. Is there not a such thing as a one day METROCARD that lets you ride as much as you want for one day? Do you have to essentially pay per subway ride? If so I would assume you can add more money to the card as the day goes on...correct? Again remember I am ignorant of how the whole public transit thing works.

    Thanks again.

I do remember that part from the one time I have been to NYC (for less than a day). You guys also don't like it if we stop in the middle of the road while crossing to take a photo of a tall building ;)

I don't think you can get an unlimited single day pass. I think those start at 1 week.

You would essentially put 10, 20, 40 dollars on one card, use that one card for everyone traveling with you, and yes you can refill it with more money. However, the more money you put on it initially the more you save.

So if it's 2 of you, then you know you'll spend $10 total going to the city and coming back on the PATH. You'd buy a $10 card and be done with it. However, if you think you might use the subway you have to figure out just how many rides you're going to take.

If I was driving in the city I would run you over with my car. $hit like that pisses us off like no other.

Sorry for all the follow up questions.
I don't follow this part. Is there a fee each time you put money on it? Also it sounds like it is same cost to ride 1 mile or 15 miles on the subway.

Then I promise you I never did that ;)
Life is a little different here in Northeast Tennessee. Here we obviously drive everywhere and we are used to having to stop to avoid animals (wildlife and pets).

Would I be safe to walk around Manhattan with a nice DSLR camera or would that make the me prime target for a good ole' "camera snatching"?

You'll be OK having it with you, the only time I'd really be careful is in super crowded areas like Times Sq where you'll want to keep a firm grip on it. In all my years in the city I've never seen someone literally just rip a camera out of someone's hand and run.

also there is some parking in the vicinity of RBA in Harrison, but I think that the parking rate is $20 and it's a mess if you arrive late and just getting out of those lots after a match can take a minimum of 45 minutes to an hour.

    No fee. But if u spend 10 u get a $1 extra value. $20 u get $2 extra. Etc.

And you could ride the subway all day for just 2.50 if u never actually LEFT the subway.
