The latest news on David Beckham’s Major League Soccer expansion franchise will be revealed during a press conference in Miami next Wednesday, according to Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez. The mayor confirmed the date of the event to The Miami Herald on Wednesday after completing more than three hours of meetings with Beckham’s ownership group. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...ed-david-beckhams-miami-expansion-plans-move-
I don't think your thread title and your content/article match. No where does it say they are awarding a franchise next week.
"Next Wednesday" is so vague and ever-changing. Wouldn't an actual hard date (2/5/14) be more useful within a thread title.
It actually said: "Miami Franchise To Be Revealed Next Wednesday According to Miami-Dade County Mayor" I was trying to shorten it and after it was posted it was too late to make changes after I realized it was conflicting with the article. I thanked the moderator for the appropriate changes already. At the time I was at the desk in my office and a visitor entered which had more priority. When I got back to this site the post was fixed...now could we move on?
your font size in that last post is incongruent with the rest of the thread. wouldn't it be more appropriate to pick a size that more closely aligned with the majority of the posts?
What could Garber or Becks say other than "we are close to choosing our stadium site"; "we are rounding out a impressive investment group"; "once the stadium is decided we will announce the franchise"; "we won't be calling it the Miami Beckham Uniteds". ?
Since DC wants 10s of millions from the gov't, I don't see many similarities. Besides maybe a rent break, Becks is also looking at some state money that is already earmarked for sports franchises, and that would be single digit millions at best. So not too much in the corporate welfare vein.
I guess I should have been clearer. What I meant was they are having an conference to announce that work is still on track, or something vague like that. Miami will get a stadium eventually, I just can't see the Wednesday announcement as being anything significant.
But Miami MLS doesn't want millions from local gov't... Unless they freely want give it. There's already millions tied up in the land swapping in DC let alone get to stadium financing. Miami is saying besides existing land rent breaks and possibly state funds, 100% everything is private. No bonds.
The good news for MLS and Da Becks Group is that construction is still very soft after the meltdown. Politically speaking this really could be a win win everywhere. The stadium is everything the Marlins and Dolphins were not....and after the Marlins rapping of the city this could sell really well if presented properly. I am usually very cynical with stadiums, and very cautious with regards to SFlorida and sports...but this has a lot of positives going for it. Flashy ownership who fit the Miami South Beach image perfectly, local hero/US sport icon LeBron, billionaire in Claure, construction jobs in a market desperate for them, very little public assistance needed... ...hard to see this not getting done quite honestly. Just depends on what land is acceptable/feasible and any public opp/ownership with that land. Not a sure thing, but so much in place.
NBA star LeBron James on MLS expansion in Miami: "I think it could be great" With a major update on David Beckham’s MLS expansion franchise expected next week in Miami, a mega star from another sport is weighing in on whether it would be a success in South Florida. The Miami Heat’s LeBron James, who is rumored to be a part of Beckham’s star-studded ownership group, was quoted by CBSMiami.com’s Tim Kephart as being fairly optimistic that Miami would not only be awarded the franchise but also that professional soccer would be a big hit on South Beach. http://www.mlssoccer.com/sideline/n...-mls-miami-i-think-it-could-be-great-sideline
United plans to build and pay for a stadium with their own money. Like Miami, United intends to rent the land ($1/year for 30 years).
I don't think you're telling the truth here. Plus, why are you threadjacking? This thread is about Miami, not DC.
There have already been reports of the Beckham group and Miami officials looking at a large number of stadium sites. Since financing and construction is not an issue, I expect the announcement to be a narrowing down, if not a selection of a site. It sounds like it's port Miami, but even if it isn't, they should be at a point where they can explicitly announce that they are working towards a team and have an actual timeline. With Garber being there it's hard to tell, but I do not expect an official expansion announcement yet. It's much too soon and there is not much to gain by it. The team will not play sooner than 2017 (longshot 2016) and making a major announcement now is only one less PR boost they can use later.

yes. the AAA is on the waterfront, port of miami is on an island in biscayne bay in between the mainland and miami beach. Everyone driving from the city to south beach on macarthur causeway (A1A, beachfront avenue!) would pass the stadium.
Yes, extremely. However you wouldn't be able to walk it since getting to the port will require getting on the new freeway/tunnel.
