I don't mind playing Mexico in friendlies, but a B squad one? I guess it's hard not to milk a cash cow

Is an all North American US squad a B squad?

    Not anymore

    -----E. Johnson
    Donovan-Dempsey-Zusi
    ----Bradley-Beckerman
    Beasley-Besler-Gonzalez-Evans
    ------------Rimando

That's arguably 6 to 8 first team players.

It's basically the Camp Cupcake squad. Maybe B squad is a bit harsh, but we're leaving off a pretty good chunk of our likely World Cup team

There's 6 to 8 of our best players including Bradley, Dempsey and Donovan!

The only real omissions are Altidore, Howard, Jones and Cameron.

All these watered down friendlies are taking away from the luster and excitement of a USA-Mexico game. I'd rather us play someone that can get us ready for the WC.

Fabian, Johannson, Brooks, Diskerud, Bedoya and quite possibly all of our Liga MX players. I completely agree that a domestic USMNT squad is a lot stronger right now than it usually is, but it's still leaving out quite a bit. Quite a few players making that trip to Brazil will not be in this game. That's the main point I'm making.

Might be a money grab but it will definitely help for preparation and for the "dark horses" from Jan. Camp/fringe players to make there case. Talking bout guys like Gil, Yedlin, feilhaber, Magee, Corona, Gomez, Arriola (only if he's tearing it up with Xolos), etc. Curious to see how much more progress Klinsmann can give the US by then. It will be more or less a finished product by then (minus the euros cuz of non fifa date)

Now I will say that Mexico is probably the best prep we're gonna get on an April date, so that is one positive

Not looking forward to this match much. I don't know how many other teams were available, but surely JK could have found a stronger team to play against instead of a CONCACAF minnow...

Fabian Johnson sure. Johannsson, Diskerud and Brooks are not starters for the US team. Bedoya is arguable vs Zusi only recently. Zusi started a lot more qualifiers than Bedoya did. None of those guys (other than Fabian Johnson) are on the field over the above players.

    Also apparently a non-FIFA date.

They're all guys who play rather frequently (except Brooks, though I think he's starting to become a regular callup). I don't just care about the XI, because I've seen about 100 different XI's in the past couple years with Jurgen and we still don't know what it'll be in Brazil. If you want to know my personal best XI, it only has 5 MLS players in it. I'm interested in all 23 players and we're leaving a rather good chunk of the pool off.

I don't want to make a big thing of this, because I don't think it's a huge deal and you're right that we're going to see several familiar faces. I'm just saying that I think too many friendlies can take away from this rivalry and if we do have to play friendlies I'd prefer that both teams have their full squads available to them.

On the contrary, this is a superb friendly, and you know that Liga MX will release Mexican-based players for this. Considering that the backbone of the US plays in MLS (Dempsey, Bradley, Donovan, Besler, etc.), coupled with guys like Beasley, Arriola, Torres, etc., this is not a bad lot of players. Mexico will bring it as well, trying to mesh their squad, and will be looking to show that they are not the same team from qualification. This will be a statement game for them. Considering this is a non-FIFA date and this is a great fixture. Competitive, lucrative, and gets a lot of press.

The best case scenario would be to get an African team like Nigeria to come out in April to play against the US and Mexico for a bit. If we can have the same squad play two matches, it will be a real WC/Camp prep and probably the last we will see before the May send off matches.

Do you really think the '07 (also in Glendale, AZ) and '08 (Houston) friendlies took anything away from the rivalry in WCQ and GC that cycle? Same with '11 (Philadelphia) and '12 (Azteca) this cycle? We pretty much always have played Mexico in at least a couple friendlies every cycle and the rivalry continues to grow in viewership numbers.

And that guy named Fabian. As well as important members bedoya and AJ. Lets not forget the drop off from Howard and Guzan to rimando is great.

However, yes it really isn't fair to call it our b squad anymore tho.

Mexico might have had a very poor year and struggled but they are not a CONCACAF minnow

I am certainly not a huge fan of Rimando's, but it is a ridiculous statement to claim the "drop off" from the 1-2 GKs to the 3rd spot is "great."

Agreed. MLS (and with a good number of options of guys playing in LigaMX) have truly broadened/deepened/improved the USMNT pool of players.

To get a sense of how/if Mexico might begin to perform in 2014 after a very sub-par 2013, tune in Wednesday, Jan 29 to UniMas at 9pm ET to see the Mexico vs South Korea friendly live from the Alamodone.

yeah... if the games are too often they become less interesting.

Yes, there would be some amount of scheduled US v Mexico games that would be "too often" -- but personally I don't think they are approaching that over-scheduling territory yet.

(Honestly, the US could play Mexico 3 times per every calendar year and I don't think the series or the individual matches would become any "less interesting" -- ymmv.)

If they were competitive matches I'd be fine with it, but I think friendlies would be less interesting. I guess let's just agree to disagree

imho, it is such a strong/healthy rivalry, that even the "friendlies" are as close to a "competitive match" as either the US or Mexico will/would be able to arrange.

Additionally, this is such a huge geographic landscape. Rotating the matches around to various regions and cities will likely go a long ways toward keeping the matches (even the friendlies) interesting and "passionate" in the stadiums (and on for those watching on tv).

And going forward, Mexico may even want to start to regularly host some friendlies at home versus the US, after finally setting one of those up in this cycle.

And, even the wrinkle of playing some of these USA-MEX friendlies on non-FIFA dates adds to the intrigue for some of these games as there are some "non-regular/non-first-team" players who get into the squads and get exposed to and help develop the rivalry.
