This was the squad for their last qualifiers:

    Korea Republic
    Line-up
    [1] JUNG Sungryong (GK) *
    [4] PARK Jongwoo *
    [5] KWAK Taehwi (C) (-81')
    [6] LEE Myungjoo *
    [9] SON Heung Min
    [11] LEE Keunho (-64') *
    [15] KIM Changsoo
    [17] LEE Chung Yong (-92')
    [18] KIM Shinwook *
    [19] KIM Chi Woo
    [22] KIM Younggwon

    Substitute(s)
    [2] JANG Hyunsoo
    [3] KIM Keehee (+81') *
    [7] KIM Bokyung
    [8] HAN Kookyoung
    [10] JI Dongwon (+92')
    [12] PARK Joo Ho
    [13] LEE Seung Ki *
    [14] JUNG In Whan
    [16] SHIN Kwang Hoon
    [20] LEE Dong Gook (+64')
    [21] KIM Youngkwang
    [23] LEE Bumyoung *

    Coach
    Kang Hee CHOI (KOR)

The ones with * have been called up now. So 5 of the 11 starters, and 8 in total from the 23, are in their A-team.

By comparison, the USA squad for the Mexico (last vital game) qualifier:

    USA

    Line-up
    [1] Tim HOWARD (GK)
    [3] Omar GONZALEZ *
    [5] Kyle BECKERMAN *
    [7] DaMarcus BEASLEY
    [8] Clint DEMPSEY (C)
    [10] Landon DONOVAN *
    [11] Alejandro BEDOYA (-83')
    [13] Jermaine JONES
    [18] Eddie JOHNSON (-75') *
    [21] Clarence GOODSON *
    [23] Fabian JOHNSON (-46' HT)

    Substitute(s)
    [2] Edgar CASTILLO
    [4] Michael OROZCO
    [6] Joe CORONA
    [9] Aron JOHANNSSON
    [12] Brad GUZAN
    [14] Mikkel DISKERUD (+75') *
    [15] Michael PARKHURST (+46' HT)
    [16] Francisco TORRES
    [17] Brad DAVIS *
    [19] Graham ZUSI (+83') *
    [20] Michael BRADLEY
    [22] Nick RIMANDO *

    Coach
    Jürgen KLINSMANN (GER)

So 5 starters and 9 in total have been called up this time around.

We can say both squads are A/B equivalent.

USA's Jan/Feb roster is modified after the Brazil portion of their training:

None of the asterisked guys has been released, so the proportion of first-teamers stays the same.

Parkhurst (an available sub who played the second half against MEX) was added for the Feb 1 friendly v South Korea.

(And the "proportion" has changed, as has the absolute count. Not that it's significantly different, and not that you were ever reporting proportions. )

The ghost of Bornstein is laughing. When the wc kicks off we will be playing a left mid or a left wing as a lb. We will be attacked over the left back position, make no mistake about it. Klinsmann only had 3 yrs and $6m to get it right.

Maybe Klinsmann did get it right. Yedlin is still on the roster for Korea.

I was talking the proportion of first squad players in relation to the full 23-man squad used in the Mexico game. Not really minding the 27/22 guys in camp at all.

Yes, the inclusion of Parky ups the number by one: 5 starters, 5 subs now (from the game vs. Mexico in the squad for ROK).

As a Portland Timbers fan, I was glad to see Harrington made the final cut. He seems to be a consistent and hard-working player.

He reads the game really well. One of the best "team players" in the business. He was my first choice for the Gold Cup. Interesting that Harrington was not rated by Vermeer as a starter over KCity's Myers-Sinovic and traded to Portland whereas JK sent KCity's starters home and kept Harrington. Having said that, Harrington's weakness is "no final ball".

I could be wrong but I suspect Yedlin might see time at right mid/wing, not rb.

He will probably play like Fabian but rfrom RB. Given freedom to cause havoc on the wing.

I dont thnk so. Koreans are smart players. We need real defenders at fullback.

Castillo, Beasley, Fabian, Cherundolo, Cameron, Lichaj, Yedlin...all these guys are known to get forward and I don't even rate the first two.

JK prefers a Bundesliga style system which emphasizes getting those FB's forward and that's totally shown in who he's deployed at fullback^^^^

It all depends on how things go in practice, but I am sure when deployed maybe last 30...Yedlin goes in to do his best FJ impression/ Chandler with his crossing and lead up play on the wings.

No way. Parkhurst and Evans, who have featured time and again at RB, have been quite useless when going forward, and have stuck to the line as 3rd CBs. Not always, but far too often.
