Taylor Twellman tweeted this out about a half an hour ago..... Taylor Twellman @TaylorTwellman39m Hearing Maurice Edu and @MLS in negotiations for his return. For the right team this could be a good move for both him and @MLS What team do you think he'd go to?
Well, DC has the top spot on the allocation list, and Ben Olsen has never been shy about playing with a DM/CM pairing.
Assuming he isn't a DP...... (let the how did [insert team here] not have to go through the allocation process threads)
We established with Dempsey that may not be true....the first contact was directly with MLS not Seattle. Also Seattle asked MLS to handle initial negotiations. http://m.si.com/3238343/how-seattles-stunning-clint-dempsey-deal-got-done/
Well if Jermaine Jones wants to come back as well and DC is interested in a CM/DM type of player who do you think they go with? The older veteran who is still pretty good, or do you go younger with Edu?
Looks like MLS is going all-in on the US Men's national team. If they shock the world in Brazil, it could be a well-placed bet for MLS.
Seattle definitely needs a back to alonso. Perhaps seattle could play him at CB then at DM if Alonso is out for any reason.
Completely plausible. However, I don't think Edu has the leverage to demand a DP salary. He's been riding the bench (or worse) for Stoke all year, so he's looking for playing time right away (most likely to get back in the USMNT picture). If so, he'll probably demand a larger salary, but not in the DP range. Or, alternatively, he could be a midrange DP and a team could sign him down with allocation money. In any case, I think he's DC ideal candidate, and DC has all the tools (allocation spot, cap space, and allocation money) to get a deal done.
Actually, I think MLS deals with him (similar to how they sign a USMNT player that would go through the allocation process) and then MLS alerts the teams so they can figure out if they can pull it off. I know first contact for Dempsey was by MLS, not Seattle. And in the Bradley effort I think MLS started the inquiry and then let the teams submit their bids to them to see who would get him. However, I'm with you on your previous post. I don't think Edu commands a DP salary right now. The question is does Stoke want a transfer fee that will make him a DP.
Yeah I am making no determination on whether he will be a DP or not. I am only pointing out that negotiating with MLS does not preclude a DP status.
If not DC, then FCD (they desperately need a DM) or CUSA (since they basically need everything). After that? No idea.
I would wonder whether this would be a loan deal or a purchase. Still, Stoke seems pretty disinterested in him, I don't remember the last time he saw the field for them.
FWIW, Edu has 1.5 years left on Stoke contract and is making $1.38m per year. Unless Stoke has the ability and is threatening to cut him out right with no further salary owed to him, I don't see why he would leave a million on the table just to be a non DP player.
He'll definitely be a DP, question is will the league cover his transfer fee or will Stoke even demand much of one if they can just dump the salary?
