    Yuya's comments taken from twitter:

Kashima Antlers have helped me to grow up as a person, so this was an incredibly difficult decision to make...
However, I've concluded that I want to place myself in a tougher environment in order to develop further.
I'm incredibly grateful for our fans' support. It's thanks to you that I was able to score so many goals in '13
Even though I'm going to Germany, I hope you'll continue to support me.
    Thank you

Damn, why was Freiburg not interested in him? They don't have the money or they feel he is not good enough?

There has never been any documented interest from Freiburg, I think. Only rumors from unrealiable websites

It was clear that 1860 and Funkel really, really wanted Osako, plus he's a pretty safe bet to get regular playing time leading up to the World Cup.

Do you think is it because of lack of funds or they simply not regard Osako? 1860 don't have much of a chance to go up imo.

Can't answer since I don't know if they have even heard of him, haha. I mean, you could ask the same question for every other club. Maybe 1860 won't go up but Bochum didn't go up when Inui played there... Inui went up by himself later ;)

If Osako is not as lucky as Inui then he would just stay in 2. Bundesliga or go back to J league?

Dude, of course they discussed possible contingency scenarios in the event 1860 doesn't get promoted. If Osako performs, they can still sell him to a 1.BL side, another win-win-win for 1860/Yuya/Kashima. In fact that's the most realistic path going forward.

What if there are still no clubs interested in him in the first division of the top 5 leagues? Does he go back to Kashima?

1860 would keep (and play) him until they receive a financially attractive offer...

I don't think everyone is as lucky as Inui, Osako is taking a gamble and his trip would be a waste if he does not get to play in one of the teams in the top 5 leagues' first division.

You are missing the point. Inui wasn't "lucky", he produced at Bochum. Osako doesn't need to be "lucky" either, as the trainer is behind him and he will get plenty of chances to show his talent. He just needs to play at a level somewhat approximating his ability...

What if he never get offers from clubc in the first division of the top 5 leagues, don't you think his trip could be somewhat of a waste unless he gets a huge increase in wages?. 2.Bundesliga is only marginally better than the J league.

The difference is that 1860 not neccessarily needs to sell like Bochum did with Inui and Goretzka.

That Osako comes for 500k to 1860 is a sign. Just before was close to bankruptcy(again) and now the investor has trust enough in the current mgmt to give them money for shopping. As long as there is no buy out clause of a certain sum in his conract I dont see him leaving anywhere in summer.

I say two weeks ago nobody ever heard about Osako here. I think the average 1860 fan has never seen him playing just one game. But I guess playing the Japanese NT and scoring 19 goals in Jleague is kinda impressive.

We're after a playmaker or regressed striker with playmaking abilities to play behind Yuya. But we dont know who they're after. For sure there were candidates Zulj or Kittel but Funkel said no it is some one else. He also gave another interview that he is wishing for a third player. That is the newest info from yesterday evening, at least.

Is Lauth more of an out-and-out center forward? Osako has fairly advanced playmaking skills so he could play slightly withdrawn if Funkel wants to get them both on the field. That's what happened in his NT debut (where Osako scored 2 goals), since Zaccheroni wanted to test 2 new strikers in the same match.

Not quite. Lauth used to be that when he was faster and had players like Volland around him that gave him the space to score. This winter 1860 is exactly looking for a replacement of Lauth and a playmaker. It could happen that Lauth finds himself on the bench. As I said, Osako could easily find himself with another new guy upfront. Funkel said he plans with Osako as center forward and is thinking of changing the system to a 4-2-3-1. I think theyll experiment what works best in the first games since I dont think Osako is going to make that many header goals with his 1,82m. 2nd Buli centerbacks are around 2m but not so quick. Probably Funkel wants Osako to play out his speed and technique and let 1860 play a low ball build-up.

The only thing Funkel said about the other player was "we still need another flexible offensive player".

Hi all. A life-long 1860 fan here. Let me see if I can add a bit to the conversation.

Lauth is more of a traditional striker in the old 4-4-2 style. He has the modern skills needed for the position (speed [though slower than he used to be], dribbling, shooting, good in the air, can cross well, etc.). He tends to play the game like Thierry Henry does. The players who grew up in that era were used differently in the 4-4-2 than were strikers from the 80s and 90s when a more "target" striker role was played.

As far as competition, Osako will have to contend with Lauth, Wood, Friend, Hain and potentially Ott. It is rumored that Friend and Hain are on the way out. Funkel (the coach) is not a fan of Hain and Friend does not fit into the 4-1-4-1 system he is currently using. That leaves Wood, Ott and Lauth. Wood has been told he needs to "step up" and play better with the chances he is given. He can play wing and up front, so even if he and Osako compete, my guess is that Funkel will not worry too much about leaving Wood on the bench for Osako since Wood can be used elsewhere. Same can be said for Ott. Plus, Ott is very young and Funkel is not the type of coach to play Ott ahead of Osako UNLESS Ott is playing well (and scoring) and Osako is not.

That leaves Lauth. Funkel likes Lauth. He's German. He has deep experience and he is a club icon. Funkel tends to give veterans more chances than younger players. BUT...Lauth has been playing all season so far under Funkel and is not scoring. My gut tells me that Funkel will bring Osako in to training camp, play him alone up front in several test matches to see how he plays, let him learn the 1860 system, give him a chance to play by putting him in around the 60th min for the first few 2.BL games. Unless Lauth starts scoring soon, I would suspect Osako gets a starting role pretty fast....say 2-3 games if that.

In short, Osako will get playing time. Germans are cautious and conservative with change. Funkel will want him to acclimate to the team and style first by using him as a sub. Then, based on Lauth's performance, Osako may end up becoming the starter. It must be said though, Osako seems to be a very aggressive and tenacious player. He seems to have scored many goals after having just won a challenge or after "poaching" a poor defensive error. I suspect Funkel will want to use those characteristics because many BL strikers are not like that. Osako's style may surprise our opponents and create many more chances than we are getting now.

One last point: If Osako can play in a 4-4-2 (Funkel's preferred formation, using a diamond midfield rather than the "double-6"), Funkel may very well play Lauth AND Osako up front. Personally, I don't think we have the midfield to pull that off.

If you are interested we have a very good 1860 team forum here if you want to talk further about the club in general. I know several people here have already visited to add their good information about Osako. We know nothing about him so any insight you can add will be very, very helpful.

    Kanpai! ;)

They must be nuts. They even offer a ticker for his arrival. His flight is three hours late and theyll await him at the airport incl. camera. Obviously, things are easy when you're big in Japan..

I have followed the Bundesliga and German football for a long while. Freiburg (SCF) is a smaller market than Muenchen, even though Freiburg is playing in the Bundesliga currently. SCF has some decent young players on their current side. They appear to be okay up front though I am sure Osako could help them. They might have to get rid of a player or two if they even had wanted to bring him on. Reading through several of the German websites it appears the sources linking Osako with SCF were not very strong.

Regardless of whether he plays in the 1.BL or 2.BL he will get visibility. Many, many players move each year up and down based on their performance. Making a top team in the 1.BL is very tough for anybody. Give it time and let's see how he plays. German teams are VERY conservative about acquiring players. Unless their name is Ribery or Schweinsteiger or Lewandowski or Reus, teams want to see how players can play in Germany before taking any further chances on them.
