We are putting the Spencer-led Timbers back together. LOL.

Low cost (4th round pick) + low cost (Salary) for a fourth rounder = win most all of the time.

As I said good player at a nice cost. He was a full time starter in 2012 and slated to be in 2013 before his injury but he is back on the pitch at the end of the year with reserves (good sign). Dom must have known he would be picked up in re-entry draft hence the trade.

As long as he has as much or more speed than Jermaine it looks like a good deal.

You are not going to find many CB with more speed than Taylor.

Nice pick up I'd think. We needed a big CB. Let's see if he can work his way in. The depth is needed in the least.

    1) Taylor is faster than you think for a CB. He just gets caught flat footed at times - different issue.
    2) Even if you name seven, we aren't getting them and that is 7 out of 38 starting CBs in the league. :)

Hard to win a cup without a GREAT, Dominant Centerback. Someone who rules the air and has great recovery speed - even when they get caught 'Flat Footed'.

We ought to know, we have been denied the last three cups by teams that had a centerback who made the difference against us.

Speed for a central defender is not high in priority for me. Positioning, standing tackles, passing percentages, goals for me. A speedy central defender with those attributes would be awesome though.
Liverpool has a CB that broke Cristiano Ronaldo's sprinting records. Ilori is supposedly the fastest runner in Sporting's history, but he can't make the bench right now.

I agree 100%. With the exception of the year Cameron played CB; we have never had speedy CBs we have had smart backs that try to always get in the right position and keep the line organized. Boswell, Erob, Gray, Waibel, Ianni, Cochrane, Andre; none of those would be considered fast. Taylor would be the second faster player to play that position for the Dynamo (more than a fill in) behind Cameron.

You are correct with these observations but have you noticed how our team plays now vs then?

Now we play with more possession, the defense is usually much higher towards the endline so now there is much more space behind the last defender. Our outside backs also are heavily involved in the attack and push much higher up the field than they used to (at least more frequently). This not only puts more emphasis on having fast outside backs that can track back to the deep corners but also center backs who can handle diagonal, through, and over the top passes to speedy forwards on counters.

We also seemed to be strangley susceptible to pacy runners coming up through the middle of the field (Remember NY)

I remember Tally and Deric having to save our bacon on many one v ones this year.

Jermaine is fast enough and a great player but he isn't in the top 6 or 7 in this league. We need a paired player with speed in the back to cover up for some of the brain farts he has or when he is venturing away from the middle helping out with our possession.

I agree with this - he isn't top seven in the league in speed at the position. But he is fast enough. He is solidly in the top third of starting CB and we aren't going to find a CB with all the tools to start in this league AND that is faster than he is without blind luck.

As for the rest of this; we have always had problems with speed (remember how Ashe became a defender). The difference is when we have a Rico in front of the final four the speed disadvantage is negated. When we play a Moffat it is exasperated.

Also I don't agree that we play with more possession and a higher line now as opposed to back then. I was watching clips of 2006 and 2007 the other day and we played very high back in the day particularly down the left. The difference is we have a bit more ball control talent down our right side, but Dom has not shifted focus that much.

    Very true.
When the fullbacks are in attack, someone in the central midfield, preferably the #7, needs to be back. The CM needs to provide cover for the CB's on players coming out of the midfield with pace.

Positioning is important for protecting against strikers who play in-between, or try to split defenders.

LOL. I still see that PR machination better than the alternative . . . "We got some guy on the cheap who may or may not ever play." Doesn't install confidence when he has to come in week one due to injury. :)

    At his age now . . . I wouldn't call that "sexy" . . . . but I would like it!

That being said, I think he is gone prior to our pick.
