After looking at sites in Queens and Brooklyn, a Major League Soccer franchise on Tuesday stood close to a deal to build a 28,000-seat stadium in The Bronx just south of Yankee Stadium, The Post has learned. The New York City Football Club — majority owned by the Manchester City Football Club of the Premier League in the UK — is “very, very close” to inking a deal with GAL Manufacturing, an elevator parts company, sources close to the deal said. http://nypost.com/2013/12/10/bronx-scores-400m-soccer-stadium/
Are we sure this is going to fly with my new mayor? I have a feeling that NYCFC might also be on the hook for some affordable housing if they want to get this stadium built. No reason why The Bronx should make the same mistakes that Harrison did.
2018 or 2019 is likely anticipating overcoming possible roadblocks, 2017 or even '16 might be the actual best case target. Again the word on street here is that the Yankees are none too keen about sharing their stadium for what could now be 4 years?!? I live on the Grand Concourse about 2.5 miles from the proposed site though not being a Yankees fan have only been to the area a handful of times. Went to see the NY Generals play at Yankee Stadium in the late '60s, my only game at the stadium. I'm guessing no institutional hurdles that can't be overcome. I'm also guessing community support or at least acquiescence will be the key. Still some bad feelings down there on the New Yankee Stadium park swap. I'm guessing the key issue for the community will be comfort level with a second stadium with NYCFC playing when the Yankees are on the road essentially turning every weekend from March through November into "game day" and possibly turning the community into a "sports complex". And as you mentioned the conceptual issue of mega sports teams building but not contributing enough to the community in other ways. I'll ride my bike down to the site over the weekend and try to get a feel about the location, maybe ask a few folks what they think.

I know absolutely nothing about the area, but when looking at google maps I don't see an "empty lot between the Major Deegan and East 153rd Street." There appears to be nothing empty around.
I'd give about 2 years to actual construction and at least a year and a half (10 months in one article) to get all the acquisitions ironed out and businesses moved. 2018 or 2019 are realistic.
Yes on the parking garages, no on the baseball fields. If the fields are removed they need to be replaced with an equivalent amount of parkland in the community. As far as I have read there is no plans to remove any parkland for the stadium at this location. To fit the stadium, 153rd St in that zone will be demapped. So the stadium will be taking the space of the garage that is shaped like a triangle, the building which currently has the elevator factory that is the rectangle on the river side of 153rd and I believe also the surface lot at the corner of River and 153rd.
So 2 years + 1 1/2 years would put you right around 2017, especially if the league is Fall-Spring by then...
I also didn't add the time simply to iron out plans and get approval. I was just illustrating that while it's a long way off that it's not crazy. I would hope for 2017 too.
When did Deadspin become "that" blog? New York's new MLS team is close to a deal for a stadium in the Bronx. Yes, there's public financing involved: http://t.co/XB9XIAniew— Deadspin (@Deadspin) December 11, 2013
I posted the following last month in the expansion forum: Here is the site: Transparent red is the property in question. It's big enough for your average MLS stadium. But i'm curious about the rest. Orange is the Train station and tracks, Purple is the on-ramp/road and Green are parking lots. If they value this piece of land as much as I think they should, they would design it in a way that would be useful for the long term. This means using as much space as efficiently as possible. With that in mind, i'm wondering for far they could go? For example, if they could shift the highway ramp further to the edge via lot 2, or move it somewhere else completely, they would have much more room to work with. Another avenue would be integrating the Train station and tracks into the stadium plan. Architecturally speaking it could work quite well, and would give them a lot more room. Integrating the pedestrian bridge is already required, so going a step further isn't a huge leap. One further step would be to integrate the parking lot behind the station. It's not land that is needed for the Stadium, but I wonder what it's used for at the moment? Just a thought. If it's feasible to do all that they would have the ability to get to capacities far higher than if they were constrained to the parcels we've heard about previously.
So one of the team's owners isn't happy about the stadium-sharing that's going to happen? Does not compute.
I like it, especially given the partnership with the Yankees, but many will question the location of it. I think many would rather have it in BK or Queens to capture that element of the city. I also can't speak on ease of access from points across LI.
Thanks. I guess "empty" means something different in New York City than it does here in Tennessee. Probably not much in NYC would qualify as what we would call empty
The organization is a 20% owner. Of course the baseball organization and team would have a problem with it. It's not ideal for either.
True, but they signed up with full knowledge that this would happen. Though In sure they were hoping for 1-2 years. What evidence is there that the Yankees are in any way dissatisfied with the arrangements?
just common sense. who wants a bunch of soccer players running up and down their outfield for 90 minutes? let alone for 17 games. they might tear it to shreds.
DC United and KC both played in stadiums with baseball teams during the baseball season. We didn't change to a fall start then.
well, nasl teams called the original yankee stadium home and then the post-1976 refurbished one as well. so nothing new in mls calling the current one home. what's a yankee stadium without a soccer team?
