Based on the Season-by-Season All-Time Tables tracked at the excellent "Climbing the Ladder" Blog,
D.C. were not quite "way out in front in points", they were joint-top through 1997,
and have remained second behind L.A. through 2012 season:
    http://usasoccer.blogspot.sg/2007/11/history-of-mls-all-time-table-plus.html

By the way, noted that the above blog was last updated in May 2012.
Any idea on the reasons of inactivity? Have enjoyed a lot reading it...

You're right for some reason I thought they had a big lead from their early success.

My memory is crap, but wasn't he a BigSoccer poster - No Short Corners, or something like that? And didn't he move over to contribute to mlssoccer.com?

    I'm probably confusing people.

Their early successes, plus the SS wins in 2006-07, have given them a long stay in 2nd place with big lead over the teams below them.

Indeed, with reference to the All-Time Comb Standings through Oct-10, 2013, the CD-per-Season Ratio remain within +1.000 to -1.000 for all teams, except Chivas USA at -1.222:

As RSL have completed their schedule while the rest have just 1 game remaining, Chivas USA have successfully defended the honor of "Wooden Spoon by Blowout Combs Received" (i.e. Losses by 4 clear goals or more), with 3 Combs received so far, thus having an "Unassailable Lead" over their 6 other "Closest Challengers" at 1 Comb received each.

This is certainly a unique achievement in itself, as they became the first team to repeat the feat in back-to-back seasons (2012-13)...:thumbsup::thumbsup:

One more Blowout Comb for Chivas in 2013 please!! ;)

    Twelveth Update of 2013:
    • Wow, the wish was granted. Chivas USA suffered their 4th Blowout Comb on the last day of the season at home ground, what a fitting "Coronation" for their "Comb Spoon"!!!

      2013-10-26 CD Chivas USA 0 - 5 Portland Timbers

    • With the Comb, Portland have now moved up to 2nd-place in the Comb Standings, ahead of N.E. Should N.E. not keeping up AND L.A. slipping up on the last day, Portland will top the standings for the 1st time in Club History!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

    • Summary of Comb Counts/% for the Current Season:

      Season Combs Games % Remarks
      2013 15 319 (out of 323) 4.702 *** Through Oct-26

    • The record for the most # of Blowout Combs in a season (13, set in 2001) has already been broken in the previous update on Oct-7.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

With just 5 games left for the season, the % record set in 2001 (13/158=8.228%) will stay put for another season, as 13 more Blowout Combs (for 27 Combs in total) are still needed for the remainder of the season (323-296=27 Games in total).

    • The 2013 "Comb Standings" so far:

Does the Red Bulls 3-0 last week count as a comb or does the win have to be by 4 goals or more?

@tigersoccer2005: For your benefit, double comb = 8+ goals win, triple comb = 12+ goals win, etc...

The closest that we had to those was, of course, Dallas 1-8 L.A. in 1998. :)

Yes, through Apr-26, 2014, the longest on-going Comb-less Streak still belongs to Colorado:
    • Colorado: 268 (through 2013) + 7 (games in 2014) = 275 games (2004-09-25 to 2014-04-26, around 10.5 seasons!!!) :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Is it fair to call them blown if the goals aren't the fifth of the game?
