At least as much as Major League Quidditch, which gets more respect than MLS.

    Ask a stupid question.

I .. don't know what Rutherford is. Is it where the Jehovah's Witnesses started?

With all respect to the Amish and their agricultural skills, MLS just has crappy marketing and always has. I followed the Argentine National team (RIP dad), and soccer on Univision, which was usually, well, not MLS.

P.S. English is my first language, but I am bilingual.

No stupid. By then I knew everything basic about MLS and had studied the divisional system when it split.

I do like you as you are a cartoon character. I imagine if I kick you you'll go flying into the sunset.

I don't think Cosmos will suck. I wouldn't be surprised if they win the Fall season. Their roster looks good enough on paper to be the best team in the NASL.

But they wouldn't dominate MLS. They're not leading a new revolution in American soccer. And that's where you get in trouble on these boards. Not because you're a Cosmos fan. Not because you're an NASL fan. But because you've let your Cosmos/NASL fandom make you so blatantly ignorant of reality.

err, you know, where the actual New York Cosmos played when they were popular, which was also in New Jersey, and no nearer to being your "home town" than Harrison.

It would take some doing to be a follower of the game since the NASL days, and have never heard of MLS for 12 years after it formed, until 2008.

I mean, that's a year after Beckham went over there. Unless you were restricting yourself to univision and news from a local free sheet, you might just have noticed a word or two about it.

It also seems a tad unlikely that millions across the country heard the news and reacted with amazement, not knowing the country even had a league.

Univision has aired at least one MLS game per week every single season since the league started playing. I've seen ads for MLS games during Mexican league games on Univision for years. I'm not sure what version of Univision you're watching, but it's not the same one that I've been watching.

Dude, he claimed he didn't know MLS existed until 2008, and then only because of an "ad in a free paper". Which means he must have completely missed the Beckham circus in 2007, all the games on ESPN, Univision, and ABC, highlights on Sportscenter, Fox Soccer, and some of Univisions soccer shows, etc. He is either a) lying or b) the most oblivious soccer "fan" on earth.

<edit>Beckham coming to MLS was front page news. Not front of the sports section, front of the LA Times, USA Today, and NY Post.

He had himself cryogenically frozen after the NASL died with instructions not to be revived until his beloved Cosmos returned.

I think if you really wanna make him mad, introduce him to a tape of NWA.

But why would he care if some old guy wanted to basically retire and come to the United States for one last paycheck? Since, you know, MLS is a retirement league.

The Cosmos signing old guys for lots of money, well, that's just them carrying on the tradition of the team, or something.

I found something interesting. When you google "New York Cosmos," the Wikipedia page is for the original team. You have to go to New York Cosmos (2010) to get to the current team. I thought they were the same thing! Don Garber must have gotten to Wikipedia. Just like he told Watford to cancel the game. Garber also made tickets cheaper for the Cosmos to play Leyton Orient than the Arsenal RESERVES.

Yea, sorry I don't believe ya. You come off as you didn't care about American soccer until the mighty Cosmos came along. Honestly you still sound like you don't care about the health to any of the leagues. It's all about the Cosmos for you. Oh, fanboys.

You may be confusing two things. I had heard of MLS teams-- in particular, the two folded ones as I was in Florida for a long while. I had no idea it was a different league though. I just thought it had shrunk to nothing, and the first I heard of the Tampa Bay Mutiny was that they folded on the radio. I thought "well, good effort though".

Yeah, I was kind of biased against English soccer (going back to my childhood), and for a long time, I sort of knew the guy as Mr. Posh Spice. The news-- even now-- barely covers soccer. As in you're lucky if you see stuff about local high school games in some places.

I'm pretty sure I put the Thierry Henry Good Day New York Interview here somewhere.

As I remember, that's kind of what happened with a lot of the press, if you were following the US press. It was like "famous English soccer player married to a
Spice Girl is coming to play here for some team in LA". For that matter, I didn't make up the term "Mr. Posh Spice", and looking up the term in Google produces interesting results.

Of course I didn't even know who he was till I went to Russia and saw him plastered on giant billboards for everything from watches to shaving razors. I asked and people thought I was an idiot.

Now will you stop casting false aspersions? You can follow all the way up to the crash and burn with my annoyance at a pink ball which led to me walking off the forum.

So, you had NEVER heard of David Beckham before 2008? Had no idea who he was? You hadn't watched the World Cups in 1998, 2002, or 2006? You missed all the headlines on every major newspaper in the country? You missed all of the hoopla on ESPN? But, then again, ESPN is just some tiny, insignificant channel. Maybe you would have seen it if it was on OneWorld Sports. You missed the 67,000 that turned out at Giants Stadium to see the Galaxy play the Red Bulls in 2007?

    Bull. Shit.

yet you say "I was a kid as the NASL fell. When it fell, I believed soccer fell here." which implies you followed the league until it folded, so you must have known it folded.

there's a massive difference between seeing little coverage of something, and not knowing it exists.

It seems somewhat incredulous that you'd be a fan of the game, and yet at no time in twelve years see any sign that the league existed - especially considering it was apparently shown on your sports channel of choice.

It would also requite you to follow the international game, noticing the USA evolve from a hopeless whipping boy into a decent team, without ever having the slightest curiosity about the game in the USA.

so you were a follower of the game but had never heard of one of the most high-profile (albeit not most talented) players the modern era?

A player who was involved in two key games against your own Argentina, famously getting sent off in 1998, and scoring the winning penalty against your team in 2002?

Not that it's any of your business, but....

I grew up in New York city, where until the early 2000's, half the area did not use cable. I was in that half. And once again am-- by choice. And frankly, I don't watch "sports channels" unless there is a specific thing I want to watch (a game). I am not a general "sports fan". I am a (real) football fan. I like baseball because I live in New York. After that, you got me. Don't watch a thing. Can barely stomach the Olympics, et cetera.

As to the "headlines", really? There were no massive headlines about it in New York. Maybe in LA, the only place I saw Beckham in the general papers was page six. (I was an avid Post reader then, but only occasionally looked at the Daily News.) So refresh my memory. Maybe I missed a paper that day.

As for those particular years, well, in 1998, I had gone through a terrible ordeal and just moved to Miami, and spent the year acclimating. I forgot about sports.

In 2002, I had a moratorium in place on TV. We had *no* TV. We listened to the radio. I highly recommend to anyone to try that for a year.

And in 2006, having returned to the United States from Russia (St Petersburg has some scary friggin soccer fans), I watched a few WC games with my dad that summer. It's what sparked my interest in American soccer, but since I was rebuilding my life in America, it took a back seat until one day a couple of years later I saw a New York Red Bulls ad in the paper.

Before then I will affirm with an oath I had no idea who or what the MetroStars, MLS, or the Red Bulls were until no earlier than 2008 or so. I had no knowledge until today of a 67,000-attendance game between LA and NY.

Well, your history explains your ignorance of the last couple of decades of American soccer in general and MLS specifically.

You're basically stuck in a timewarp and missed the huge impact MLS has had on soccer in the US?

If you missed the first 13 yrs of MLS soccer, how can you comment on the league and the leagues impact on american soccer? MLS has a ha bigger impact on the US National team than the original NASL ever did. Just go look at the 2002 World Cup team and you will see the impact MLS had on that team.

I don't know how, I wrote a long post explaining the nuance and it seems to have disappeared. Basically short version, I was ten and didn't get how leagues existed, was taught from childhood Brits play dirty and I had to get over it on my own, and thought that Argentina was cheated out of '94 with the doping scandal.

Oh, please. Wikipedia gets re-edited on a daily basis. I remember trying to put an NASL entry in. It got blanked, defaced and refixed repeatedly over series of hours, days, and weeks by USL people who wanted to continue denying its existence. Basically it wasn't set in stone till 2011.
