So since the Borough Boys decided to support a second division from Long Island (makes sense), we need a new supporter group to pick up the banner. So far I've seen two groups form on Facebook. The New York Elite https://www.facebook.com/NewYorkEliteSc?fref=ts And The New York City SC https://www.facebook.com/nycsc?hc_location=stream NYCSC is having discussion on becoming the first officially recognized supporter group.
Thank you for the link to the New York City SC. I never knew about them. I don't mean to be childish, but the other two groups (New York Elite & New York Gentlemen) didn't grab me, because I think their names are somewhat, well, let's just say I don't care for them. There's really no rush, so I believe I'll hold off joining until NYCFC gets around to naming an official group.
You´ll laugh but when you mentioned earlier that you where a "Metro Card warrior" I sort of assumed it was a supporters group of some kind
A good name imho for a supporters group is "Sons of Liberty". Besides the reference to the statue, the "sons of liberty" were big in NYC in opposition to British rule prior to the American Revolution. From wikipedia: In New York City the Sons of Liberty would put up liberty poles to stand as a testament to their resolve. The British soldiers would tear them down almost as soon as they were put up. This back and forth action resulted in several skirmishes between the two sides. Most notable among these engagements was the Battle of Golden Hill on January 19, 1770, in which many people were injured and at least one killed. Violent outbreaks over the pole raged intermittently from 1766 until the Patriots gained control of New York City government in April 1775.
Wouldn't that make them The S.O.L? I'm not sure that is the best acronym you want your supporters group to have.

[/quote] Why should anyone care about some stupid slang acronym that hardly anyone knows and which has nothing to do with soccer? This is the dumbest reason I ever heard of to reject a name. What happens if a slang acronym comes along after the name was chosen? Do you choose a new name? Should the government change the name of the "Statue of Liberty" because it also has the slang acronym "SOL" which you find so repulsive?
I don't find it repulsive, I find it funny. Part of being in a supporters club is insulting other supporters clubs and being insulted back by said clubs. National Landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell don't have that problem. Look if you want to be the Sh*t out of Luck Supporters Club I'm all for it, name away. It will just make things that much more fun when we go visit New York and when you come visit us.
We don't use slang acronyms to make fun. We find fun things to say by using our knowledge and powers of reasoning. For example, take the chant: "The Son of Ben was a Traitor" It is based on historical data, not an unknown slang acronym. http://fi.edu/franklin/family/willie.html
LOL! Actually I call myself that, because I love riding the subway to local sporting events here in NYC. When I go to Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, Madison Square Garden or the Barclays Center I always break out the metro card for the subway. It costs only $5 for the round trip and allows me to drink my fill without having to worry about driving. That's why I don't care if the new stadium goes to Brooklyn, Bronx or Queens, as long as there's a subway in the area.
When do you ever join a soccer supporters group because its official? Is there any MLS club that has an official group? Recognized yes but that's it. If it isn't grassroots created, it's corporate shill of the highest order.
I think you are missing the point, there is never going to be an official supporters group. So you are waiting for nothing. Why not look around and get involved now.
What´s the difference between a recognised supporters group and an official one really? Being recognised makes it kind of official I guess. At City we had two supporter groups for decades, one official, the other not. There was never any difference between them really..Apart from the bad feelings that made the original group split in two. Nowadays they have merged.
Might've misspoke a bit using the term official than recognized, but then again things like that don't bother me in the least. Forgive me for being a schmuck, but I really do SMH at terms like "Authentic", "Legitimate", "Proper" and "Grassroots". They're all totally meaningless to me. Yup, I'm that guy who really doesn't find it to be any sort of insult to my honor to see teams like NYRB in MLS. I also don't think it makes NYCFC any less legit or authentic, because they're owned by MCFC and play in Yankee Stadium. And FWIW the Sounders have 5 "official" SG's.
Yep. But lets be frank, everything about NYCFC aka Man City USA is fake and corporate shilly so a band of fans joining a club created SG wouldn't be out of place for this expansion team.
For the record I'm not committed to following either NYFC or Cosmos at this point, but at least be honest and admit the NeoCosmos aren't any less fake than NYCFC.
Well, in England or Germany any club that wasn´t founded at least a hundred years ago by a group of drunk coalminers that beat their wifes and donned flat caps is considered fake anyway.. History..Is what you make it!
In Dundee... The club that was formed in 1909 is considered the fake one... ;-) ( personal bias there)
I have always been a fan of Gangs of New York, so I think it would be awesome if a supporters group were to be called the "Dead Rabbits".
No idea really, but it seems a bit premature to have a supporter group before the team is in place..It´s not like any fans need to "market" their area to a potential franchise in this case. Rather the other way around, and that is good news for soccer fans in NY
Or you can just admit there really isn't any groundswell of support for this team, which is why there really isn't anyone falling over themselves to put real time and energy into this. Forming a supporters culture takes hard work and commitment, if you are expecting Man City USA to just waive a wand a "POOF" supporters appear...you're going to be incredibly disappointed in 2015.
