    2013 Tie Breakers:
When was the "Most Wins" announced as a new (& top) criteria for 2013?

Don't recall that it was announced earlier in the season...

    Is that another mid-season change?

At least it was done earlier (one-third into the season) in 2013 as compared to two-thirds in 2012. :p

The league hates SJ and Portland. :)
I assume NY and LA have no ties, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Apparently, the "Most Wins" is now included "quietly" as the "top" tie-breaker no less...

16-1-17 (W-D-L) is now "officially" a lot more "valuable" than 15-4-15, and so on... all the way to 8-25-1 (all for the same 49 points).

Announced? Not sure. It has been on the MLS website since the season started. I've been using them in my standings on the Houston board since Week 1.

This is a post I made on March 3, 2013:

Why does MLS have New York ranked ahead of Dallas in the Supporters' Shield Standings? Looking at their respective disciplinary stats, Dallas has a better disciplinary record than New York, so shouldn't Dallas be ranked first?

I'm guessing no one is totaling the Disciplinary Points table. Whoever is updating the table is just using road goals.

Was just re-acquainting myself with this debate from last year. Maybe, they've "internally" decided to change the tiebreakers another time and not informed anyone yet. You never know with these guys. (See my posts above). :)

This is what the Brazilian League did...at least last year.

It'll be an interesting twist. Better that total goals, anyway.

I actually asked the same questions in the other thread too:
MLS SS Race 2013-05-19: On what basis were NYRB ranked ahead of FCD?
    https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/...rb-ranked-ahead-of-fcd.1987599/#post-27822085

Maybe it's really because NYRB players are indeed better-looking?

I think they may have just conveniently re-used the 2012 Disciplinary Points for 2013.

Looks like MLS have already started using "past season" results as a tie-breaker for "subsequent seasons".

Maybe one-day, by the same token, the Supporters' Shield Winners shall be granted automatic playoff berth in subsequent season(s) as well?

From FC Dallas 2013 Foul Stats:
    135 fouls + 13 yellow cards + 0 double yellow + 2 straight reds = 186 disciplinary points

From NY Red Bulls 2013 Foul Stats:
    187 fouls + 17 yellow cards + 1 double yellow + 1 straight red = 243 disciplinary points

These point tallies assume 1 point for fouls committed, 3 points for yellow cards, 5 points for double yellow cards, and 6 points for red cards. It does not take into account any disciplinary committee suspensions that might have occurred.

So, Dallas has a clear lead on NY when it comes to disciplinary records, and Dallas would have to have had 10 disciplinary committee suspensions in order to have a worse disciplinary record than NY.

    Well done!

Perhaps MLS changed the rule mid-way again: that Tie Breaker #4 should now be:
    4. Fewest Disciplinary Points in the previous season. :p

Or they just don't care about disciplinary points until it's needed as a tie-breaker at the end of the season.

That's just lame of the league... Maybe too busy with NY2 in the past few months.

By the way, the last time NYRB topped the SS Table was probably in 2007, Week #8:
    http://aragon.ws/soccerdb/league/table.php?stageId=324&matches=0&rounds=1&roundCount=8
    Code:
                P W D L GF - GA Pts GD
    1. New York Red Bulls 8 5 2 1 15 - 4 17 (+11)
    2. New England Revolution 8 5 2 1 15 - 7 17 (+8)
Enjoy the view at the top, while it lasts!!

Also noticed another inconsistency for the ranking of Chicago Fire & Toronto FC.

Both teams are on 7 points, though Chicago (2 wins) should be ranked ahead of TFC (1 win).

This is reflected correctly in the Conference Standings (http://www.mlssoccer.com/standings), but was the other way round in the Shield Standings (http://www.mlssoccer.com/standings/supporters-shield).

Something is wrong with MLS, if they can't even get the Standings right...

Are you absolutely sure they use the same tie-breakers for the conference table as for the SS table? :D;):D

Well, am ABSOLUTELY NOT SURE what the HxxL is going on, base on the observations so far:

    1. No prominent announcement on changes to Top Tie Breaker. - Check. :ROFLMAO:

    2. 2012 Disciplinary Points were used to determine 2013 Standings. - Check. :ROFLMAO:

    3. "Most Wins" doesn't apply as the Top Tie Breakers in Shield Standings. - Check. :ROFLMAO:

    4. The Conference Standings and the Shield Standings may employ different Tie Breakers. - Check. :ROFLMAO:

    5. The degree of "Handsomeness" of the players may be the 10th & unspoken Tie Breaker in case all else (incl. coins/lots) fails. - Check. :ROFLMAO:

While the ties among FCD/NYRB & Chicago/TFC have temporarily disappeared this week (breath a sigh of relief), MLS have made another blunder this week by placing Portland (5 wins) ahead of SKC (6 wins), totally ignoring THEIR OWN RULES with MOST WINS as the TOP TIE BREAKER altogether.

After Phily beat CLB 3-0 on Jun-5, MLS still stubbornly listed Portland ahead of the other 22-point teams, despite having less wins among them...

I think they just don't care about tiebreakers until the end of the season when it actually matters.
