    Thu 28/07/11 CLF Bayern München 0 - 2 Barcelona
    • Barcelona were 5-1 aggregate winners in the 2008/09 quarter-finals. They effectively decided the outcome in the first leg, sweeping in four first-half goals through Lionel Messi (9, 38), Samuel Eto'o (12) and Thierry Henry (43).
Bayern earned a 1-1 draw against that season's eventual champions in the return, Franck Ribéry (47) and Seydou Keita (73) scoring. With Guardiola serving a one-match ban, Tito Vilanova was on the touchline in Munich.
    • The lineups in Munich on 8 April 2009 were:
    Bayern:
    Butt
Lell, Lúcio, Demichelis, Lahm, Sosa (Hamit Altıntop 78), Van Bommel, Ottl, Zé Roberto (Borowski 78), Ribéry, Toni.
    Barcelona:
    Valdés
    Alves, Puyol, Piqué, Abidal
    Xavi, Touré, Keita
    Messi, Eto'o, Iniesta (Hleb 78).
    • Ottmar Hitzfeld's Bayern beat Louis van Gaal's Barcelona home and away in the 1998/99 group stage en route to reaching that season's final. Stefan Effenberg (45) earned a 1-0 victory in Munich while at the Camp Nou, Alexander Zickler (48) and Hasan Salihamidžić (87) struck to overturn Giovanni's 29th-minute penalty.
    • Bayern won the clubs' only previous semi-final 4-3 on aggregate on their way to lifting the 1995/96 UEFA Cup. The first leg in Germany finished 2-2, Gheorghe Hagi hitting Barcelona's 77th-minute equaliser after Marcel Witeczek (52) and Mehmet Scholl (57) had overturned Óscar García's strike (15). Otto Rehhagel's Bayern came out on top at the Camp Nou, Markus Babbel (39) and Witeczek (83) scoring before Iván de la Peña's reply (88) for Johan Cruyff's team. Barcelona's lineup included Guardiola and goalkeeper Carles Busquets, father of Sergio.

    Match background
    • Bayern have won 11 of their last 13 UEFA Champions League games on home turf, including last season's final, a play-off victory over FC Zürich and a 2-1 success against Madrid in last year's semi-final first leg. They beat Valencia CF 2-1 in September to maintain an excellent home record against Spanish sides: W14 D5 L1. The solitary defeat was a 3-2 loss to RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2002/03.
    • Barcelona are looking to extend an eight-match unbeaten sequence on German soil, which has featured five wins and three draws. Their most recent trip was for a 3-1 victory at FC Bayer 04 Leverkusen in last season's last 16 – they went on to win the second leg 7-1. Leverkusen were the last team to beat Barcelona in Germany, inflicting a 2-1 defeat in the 2001/02 group stage; that was also their last defeat home and away against Bundesliga clubs. Of the subsequent 17 matches, Barcelona have won 14 and drawn three. Barcelona's record away to German teams, including in two two-legged UEFA Super Cup ties, is W9 D10 L5.
    • Barcelona's record against German sides in two-legged contests in UEFA competition is W13 L4; Bayern's record against Spanish opponents is W8 L6.
    * The Spanish side advanced to the 1991/92 final as group winners.
    • Bayern have twice overcome Spanish opposition in European Cup finals, beating Club Atlético de Madrid after a replay in 1973/74 and Valencia on penalties in 2000/01.
    • Barcelona beat Fortuna Düsseldorf to win the European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1979 and have defeated Borussia Dortmund (1998) and SV Werder Bremen (1993) to win the UEFA Super Cup.
    • The winners will face Dortmund or Madrid in the final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 25 May.

Some nice match background statistic there. Speaking of footballing style, in recent years the German seems unable to overcome the Spanish style, with Germany losing to Spain in both Euro and WC and then BM and Leverkusen were thrashed by Barcelona in 2009 & 2012 respectively, although they eliminated Madrid through shootout.

Not gonna lie but the 2009-2011 Barcelona side was something else. Etoo, Henry & Messi in 2009 were unstoppable combo and then Pedro, Villa & Messi in 2011. We're only 1 goal away from reaching the final in 2011 (thx to Ibra CL curse). This time the way we reached the semi final was rather abrupt with so many injury problems and some suspension while Bayern pretty much cruising except that loss to Arsenal but still it shows you that they're not unbeatble side. Yea they just won 6-1 in the league but we also able to do that in the league with second string players last week.

I know many people here do rate this Bayern side highly but apart from Juventus thrashing, their group was fairly easy and they won against Arsenal with away goal rules so I wouldnt go as far to say they're a perfect team. In my opinion RM is the strongest technically out of 4 team cause they looks much more solid since beating us in the last 2 el classico.

Not that I think we will start like this, but I agree. Villa over Alexis, Abidal over Bartra for me (just a little while ago I thought no way Abidal, but I'm sold - play him).

I think our defensive problems in this tie is overblown. There is no doubt that the team looks very unstable at the moment but part of that problem is the midfield which has been slow to cover the midfielders from the opposition. I think Xavi and Iniesta are playing little further than they used to do undre Pep And they are making more runs to the box than before. On top of that, Messi has been doing less of the defensive workshop from the front but that was not the case against Milan. So i will be very surprised if Messi, Xavi And Iniesta don't work as hard as they did against Milan as most people are already writing us off.

Anyway, this team has not won so many titles in recent years due to it's defence. We have won so much because of our midfield and attack. If Messi starts defending from the top and Xavi/Iniesta make less runs towards their box, i believe that we will win this tie. I also think that Alexis and Pedro should start in these ties as they are more hard workers than Villa/Tello And we need them to track back when Bayern attacks.

It should be an excellent matchup between two of the best possession-based sides in the world. Good luck.

I like the fact that so many people have written us off. I agree with ilovefootball, after the last few matches, it has to be Pedro and Alexis in at the other forward positions.

Too many people seem to favour Villa it seems on this forum. He missed a penalty and skied a for sure goal on the weekend that could have cost us points. Plus he's looked out of sorts offering almost nothing in recent matches (his assist on Pedro's equalizer in the last round of the Champions League not included - prior to that he was like most of the team - awful). Yet people seem to want to include him in the biggest match of the season?

If that were Alexis, 50% of the comments in the last match thread and this one would have been "Alexis is garbage, blah blah". Yes he hasn't been finishing, but, Villa doesn't have the pace or the back tracking skills that Alexis has. We could sub on Villa maybe later in this match, but Alexis looks to be in better form and can offer more off the ball than Villa at the moment.

I was all about starting Bartra, but if Abidal can handle playing three days after his last match, then he should start. His experience and poise are things we can't teach Bartra at the moment. Plus I'd imagine he's faster than Bartra.

I believe he scored the winner against AC Milan. So his goal and assist helped us to advance at knockout stage twice , I dont see how that's not a big contribution.

Put Alexis in Villa goal agaist AC milan situation. He will not use his left foot, let alone to bend it to the far corner. He missed a penalty, yea no big deal, Messi and Ronaldo miss it in CL so does anyone else.

    Agreed with the first point.

Disagreed with the Villa bashing. By which I don't mean that Alexis is garbage. Both are ok options to field, imo Villa the better choice because he is decisively more clinical. Also I like Alexis as a sub: when the opponent's defs get tired, it's not funny facing a fresh and fast player like Alexis.

Thing is that apart from opportunities like the one where Villa scored against Milan, he brings absolutely nothing to the team, and the truth is that those opportunities rarely come for Barca.
Against Bayern, Barca will need very mobil players who will press like hell and also track back, Bayern is way way better than Milan & Psg (another team which Barca struggled so much against).
Villa shouldn't start the game imo, Barca should start with the front 3 of Pedro/Messi/Sanchez

Matter of opinion. But while I think it's ok to start Alexis, I think you're being way too rough on Villa here. He is after all - despite the not so huge amount of minutes he's gotten - our second top scorer this season. Yes, people need to press and track back, but people also need to score. My whole point anyway: either choice is ok (though I'd go with Villa), can't see how is this a situation where one of the options is so radically better than the other, as you say.

I agree Bayern is tougher than Milan or PSG.

The thing is that while Villa is a better goal scorer than Alexis, he's sadly no longer considered a top goal scorer. Based on their over-all play and the opponent Barca will be facing, i think Alexis should get the starting spot.
And isn't Fabregas the 2nd top scorer for you guys this season? i thought he was..

Villa scoring ratio this season still almost as high as his first season in this team. If you count only playing minutes, probably even higher.

Cesc has 13 goals this season in 42 matches , Villa has 14 in 35, Alexis has 7 in 39, Tello has 8 in 30, Pedro has 8 in 39. Villa definetely the most clinical of the 5.

I think its worth taking into account that signs show Heynckes could very well play Daniel van Buyten over Jerome Boateng at CB. Van Buyten's weakness at CB is very well-dooumented; he is slow as a tortoise. A fast-moving, pacey. dynamic attack better suited to Sanchez could take advantage of this. Whereas Boateng is fairly quick and athletic and could deal with an attack like that better, but is inexperienced by comparison to van Buyten and prone to lapses in concentration that a clinical striker like Villa could take advantage of. So it may partially depend on who Tito thinks Heynckes will start at CB. Heynckes' primary first-choice until this point has been van Buyten, but that could change. Just my two cents.
