Gil? Yura was a much bigger whiff, IMO.

I wasn't trying to make a point about which former KC player was/is better. My point was that sometimes a player can determine where they want to play even if another team "owns" their rights. I've heard similar things about Seattle getting Martinez. Not sure that RSL's front office gave him away any more than KC's front office gave Gil away.

Ah. I didn't realize that you suspect that Martinez had expressed a preference for Seattle.

I don't think he did, lol.. if anything his club Real Espana probably did, but not Martinez himself. Just the fact RSL gave him up without even really trying is what makes it a bit odd.

I haven't seen any public comments by Martinez expressing that preference, but I have no connections with any of the parties, so I really have no idea whether he did or not.

I was very vocal about my displeasure with RSL in the Martinez debacle until the town hall meetings where garth discussed the move.

So as to not violate the "thou shalt not talk of this" rule with the meeting I'll briefly shed light.

RSL wanted Martinez, RSL puts tag on him, Martinez doesn't like RSL offer (cap restrictions), Seattle expresses interest. We lose rights following year bc of attempted contract, get something instead of nothing and make trade.

I still don't like it, but I'm not as pissed about it

If they offered less than Seattle then who can blame him, but I assume thats not all.

It may be almost all. At the time he was ready to enter the league, we could not have scraped together much more than the league minimum. We really were running on fumes last year, and while we could have offered him a decent/worthy contract in the offseason (like now), he was not in a position to want to wait. And with expiration of discovery rights happening at the end of the year, it wasn't as if we had much negotiating power in a trade with Seattle.

The discovery claims are funny things. They aren't offers, just some odd sort of "prior rights" claim on players who may or may not come to the league; only if they do or negotiations are open does the discovery right come into play. I imagine we "discovered" him before the Olympics, and if he had played poorly then even our scant resources under the salary cap would perhaps have been enough. We never made an offer - just reserved the right to do so ahead of all other MLS teams.

The discovery system is rather murky. No one outside the league (and perhaps the front offices, though I am not sure) really knows who is on which list - none of us knew Mario was on ours until it emerged that Seattle wanted to sign him. If the rights were permanent, then we could have forced a good trade from Seattle or made Mario wait for the next season if he really wanted to come to MLS. The expiry date combined with the salary cap did us in.

No disrespect then for Mario - we just couldn't afford him at the time.

Discovery claims are 'dibs' - as in 'We claim dibs on Martinez*' (*for the next x months). So the first team that claims dibs gets the first chance to ask them out on a date, er, deal or you can choose to trade your dibs for something else...

Thats what did RSL in.. once Mario did his thing in the Olympics, his stocks soared. He was hearing from Werder Bremen, America, Toluca, and other teams. That really is bad luck. I'm glad you were able to inform me :) RSL with a great piece of scouting but with unfortunate timing and circumstances.

Great scouting but apparently scant resources to sign.

Sounds like almost everyone wants to play for the Sounders, turf and weather notwithstanding. It is a pretty amazing atmosphere up there.

yeah, Seattle is so much better than a German club named Werder Bremen in that department...

Wasn't really sure where to ask this, but does anyone know of a promo code for MLS Live this season? I know last year there was one that I believe took the price down to $40 for the season. I didn't do it at the time then wound up paying for it later when I realized I actually had a use for it. :D I haven't received an email about it and didn't find one poking around a bit. Was hoping maybe someone had heard something.

If there is one, I doubt it brings the price lower than $50 ($49.99), since that's the discount they offered for renewals this year.

If you were a subscriber last year, they might have tried to charge your CC for a renewal this year already.

I had done the month to month for a few months towards the end of the season when I needed it. It was kind of dumb because they tried to charge me well after the season was done. I'll probably just wait until Sat or so before I buy in just in case they offer some kind of discount.

One team we don't talk about much here is Toronto (for good reason). This weekend it was basically announced that German nat, TFC captain and DP Torsten Frings would probably be bought out and released.

So they changed leadership in the offseason (DC's Payne), grabbed a new coach a month ago (ex-DCU/Blackburn kiwi Nelson, also a Kreis-esqe coaching resume) and now have dumped 2 of their 3 DPs (Hassli to Dallas, but remaining DP Koevermans is still injured).

I think they have a lot of promise for the future, Nelson is a smart guy. But man they look bad starting the season next week. On a more positive note, Hogan Ephraim of QPR is supposedly joining them soon.

I think the problem with TFC is that they always seem to be looking bright for the future, then sack everyone before the future can even begin to show up. They need some serious stability for a few years and stick with someone instead of the revolving door of staff.

You don't start stability with a cast-off Dutch coach who is clueless or a former MLS assistant coach who has either already failed as a coach or lost the club and ownership.

TFC shouldn't have had those 2 in charge to begin with. The changes this off-season with Payne and Nelson were the right way to go, however I think they won't make the playoffs again in 2013. But I think they might be good by 2014.

I know nothing about it, but TFC was mocked frequently about the Nelson hiring when it was announced. The criticism was mostly about his lack of coaching experience. It seemed that most felt it was an awful hire. Just curious - why are you so high on him? (I don't remember him from his time with DCU)

Or is it more that you are confident that it won't be the trainwreck that was Aron Winter, who was Jurgen Klinsmann recommendation if I remember right?

One of the main reasons it was mocked was because Nelson was set to finish out the season at QPR, and then come to TFC in the summer, with a guy who had no coaching experience at the helm in the meantime. The quality of the hire definitely shifts based on the timing of Nelson's arrival - though how far/much depends upon who is doing the analysis.
