having sat on the sidelines, mostly, on this issue, I have to say that kgilbert78 does have a bit of a legitimate beef (though it doesn't rest entirely w/ you). For example, I, too, take issue with the way hardhead made his statement ["But this is not the place to discuss theology or spread hate."] For one, the statement seems to equate theology = hate, which comes across as an attack, in itself, on anyone from a theistic point of view. For another, as I said in the other thread, it (and several other statements) more or less convey the sentiment that those of certain "belief systems" are welcome to post, and those of other belief systems are not... And I'd agree w/ kgilbert78 that the general "tone" of the threads has been to welcome areligious/non-religious points of view, even ones that many in our society might consider "controversial," but to be all too ready to edit out those that even suggest a theistic point of view -- while at the same time letting slide at least two separate comments, in the same thread, that were very broadly slanderous of followers of one particular religion. Just my opinion. But one I thought I'd throw out there in hopes of promoting truly "open" discussions in the future.
I agree with KC that we should move on. However, I want to respond to this particular comment. My "or" in the quote above was very much meant to distinguish two separate things I wanted to avoid: (1) morality debate guided by theology or other people's perceptions of other people's theology and (2) hate/disrespect. I see those as two very distinct things that are not particularly productive to discuss here (in my experience). Maybe I should have separated them into two sentences as to not lead people to think I was equating. I can assure you that was not my intent. The morality of the theological debate about sexuality is not something that is likely go change anyone's minds and is likely to turn into name calling from both sides--including disrespectful non-theists. Unfortunately, I wasn't around much on late Friday & Saturday when the thread, in my view, went off the rails. You'll notice I never weighed in on my views on the theistic debate (or in the politics thread for that matter), because I don't think that's my place as a mod. Specifically, I tried to encourage KG to post his view, so long as it was civil and relevant to the specific Rogers announcement (not more broadly about gayness in general). I'm just trying to keep this a place that is not full of acrimony. I posted the "rules" because I wanted us to avoid a heated discussion about morality as, in my view, the "Ex-" thread isn't the place for that. I, separately, didn't want a bunch of sophomoric gay jokes or hateful pointed barbs. Two..Distinct..Things. I did my best and it didn't work out. As soon as the announcement was made you could feel the losing battle no matter how it was played: I'll take responses as PMs if you want to continue to talk about it. Let's move on.
I never realized how seriously some people take interwebz message boards. Aren't we all here just to rant and rave about the Crew? Maybe I'm here for the wrong reasons if I don't take anyones opinions personally and just like entertainment about the club I love for an hour or two or three of my work day. Anyway, so, um, where is Rusty Pierce at these days?
A brief overview of the tRR saga from the Crew BSers: Happy for him Proud of him Indifferent This is not about soccer Don't approve Too political I'm gay Not really political Don't agree but supportive This is against the BS rules Don't care Frustrated This is within the BS rules Hope he plays again Still think he stinks, always will Can't say what I want to Supports my views Goes against my views Lets move on One last thing Move thread Close thread New thread Misunderstanding Some of these words were used: Bigot Liberal Conservative Manifesto Agenda Christian Left Right Media Lifestyle Preference Hate Stonewall Union Ideology Diatribe Issues resolved = 0% Minds changed = 0% Voices heard = 100% (some may think otherwise) Valid responses = 100% Think that about covers it, so now lets shake hands, share a brew and support the Crew together. tils I die
Sorry, only had a 15 minute break at work. I'll work on one shaped like tRR or would a corner flag be better?
seems to me that calling someone a dick is hugely sexist, we should at least come to the middle ground (literally and figuratively) and use a non gender specific terms like a**hole. Mods can you shut this thread down immediately?
Attempting to rescue this thread: Hey where's Josh Gardner playing nowadays? I literally typed "random former Crew player" into the address bar on my browser and looked for the first ex-Crew player's name to appear in the search results. Didn't have time to think this through in such a hasty salvage operation.
Getting back on target. Can someone help me fill in the gaps. The image of Rob Smiths golden, yet thinning locks got me thinking is there evidence to support the (made up) rumor that the Columbus Crew have tried to maintain at least 1 (one) blond, thinning haired, soccer player on their roster at all times?
Dammit, Bill. You had such potential for a great KHT, but ultimately failed us all in the end. I hereby coin this term: BAHT, which is when a hat trick is finished with an Aimer, thereby requiring the us to gouge our eyes out.
Bill... you're killing me. Seriously, thanks -- I needed that laugh. (As someone who's been reading the boards for the last couple days probably could have told you.)
Let's hope they happen infrequently enough to not warrant remembering what a BAHT is. Hell, as long as we're all being dicks -- did I just miss the memo that Aimer was Satan? A worse villain than MLSRumors, Simon Borg, Amado Guevara and Carlos Ruiz combined? If someone could FedEx that script to me, I'd love to read it.
Well, Rob Smith "On FIRE!" retired after 2000. No balding blondes jump out at me from the roster until Magic Simon Elliott joins the team in 2004.
So how long until Hesmer gets inducted into Crew hall of fame or gets his jersey retired? (What exactly does the Crew do for this?) Methinks the Crew shouldn't wait very long. He scored against TFC and was too Massive for the Galaxy. Those too things are hall of Fame worthy alone even without his 5 all-time Crew records.
Yes, and of course there was a five year dearth until gehrig now. so does that mean the myth is busted?
They should have the ceremony when TFC are here and, of course, show the goal highlight. Wouldn't that be fun?
