Despite the Union coming out as the first team to support gay rights, they have announced a giveaway with Chick-Fil-A for this season. Considering MLS abandoned a partnership with the Boy Scouts as a result of their exclusion of the LGBTQ community, it is incredibly hypocritical for the Union to support an organization known predominantly for opposing LGBTQ rights. Nick, being Nick, shrugged criticism off by saying that the club will eventually have a gay pride night, likely in 60-90 days.

Gay for soccer wrote an article about this:
    http://gay4soccer.com/2013/02/14/philadelphia-union-chick-fil-a/

I would encourage anyone else who is outraged by this to share their concerns with the Union directly, especially by threatening them with the only thing they care about, your wallet. You can share your concerns here.

I saw that, and, quite frankly, it's incredibly underwhelming and exactly what I would expect from Nick. It's unacceptable for the Union to claim to support the LGBTQ community and then partner with one of the most outspoken opponents in the business world of the community. I'm sure enough angry messages and emails will create a turn face, as, if I have learned anything these three years, the team is worried about losing money.

Did you actually read the gay4soccer link? Cited in it:

    http://equalitymatters.org/blog/201301290003

So it's okay as long as they don't fund the viler organizations?

I just went to Chik Fil-A for lunch today. Had a chicken sandwich, waffle fries and a peach milkshake. Does that make me a bad person? We might as well start haranguing people for driving Volkswagen because Nazi camp labor was used, or people who use Chase Bank for credit cards after they basically froze Jewish accounts which made it hard for them to flee, or IBM computers for tabulating data cards to round up Jews, Exxon Mobil (formerly Standard Oil) basically fueled the Luftwaffe, Coca Cola for providing Fanta to Nazi Germany during the war, Dow Chemical products because of agent Orange in Vietnam. The list is endless. The best defense for those who feel strongly about this is simple: Don't patronize at Chik Fil-A. If it really bothers you that much, don't go to the game. That is the beauty of first amendment. When you start protesting to me that I am a bad person because I gave Chik Fil-A 8 bucks of my hard earned money, that is when the cause is lost and an irrational frenzy starts. That accomplishes practically nothing, but animosity. The way I look at it, let the Union take the sponsor money and we all can ignore Chik Fil-A promotions by not participating in whatever they are doing. Works like a charm because the pocketbook always dictates the future acts.

I let them know I wax disappointed. I wasn't threatening about it. I'm not outraged, I just want them to understand it wasn't the best idea they ever had. They also sell Coors at th stadium, which I try to avoid for similar reasons. Yes, the response was underwhelming, but they heard enough complaint to make a statement and maybe the complaints were annoying enough they'll think twice next time. At least we don't have German flag red uniforms with a black VW logo and a double headed eagle.

This is vile, and if there's a protest at the game, I will join right in.

And Billy South Philly, there is a massive difference between selling to evil people and being the evil people that actually discriminate and tell people that they are less than people. One is disgusting, the other is unforgivable. I don't see how you can't see the distinction.

I hate for this to be a political debate but here we here we go.

A quick glance at the websites Chick-Fil-A is still donating to and the rhetoric seem to advocate for traditional marriages in a positive light as opposed to talking negatively about LGBT (point it out if I am wrong). As long as they don't treat the LGBT community negatively (refuse to employ, serve, etc.) I do not see why a company should not be entitled to their opinions as long as they do not mistreat people. Two companies' views are not always going to be congruent and as long as Chick-Fil-A is not making malicious comments or are mistreating the LGBT community this should be a non issue.

    Disclaimer:
I do not share the same views as Chick-Fil-A but I do believe in the 1st Amendment.

While it can easily be a debate on many levels, the core of Chick-Fil-a's values are 'Christian'. While a number of those are commendable such as family, honesty, charity. Others tend to be archaic and mis-guided. Sadly many who claim to be Christian do not follow the golden rule of do unto others as you would have done to you. While you can say CFA has good intentions, it does seem them do many good things, some of of their good intentions are led astray.

However, none of those companies are associated with their actions like Chick-Fil-A which has been polarized and represents the anti-gay movement. Do you think Nazis when you drink Fanta? Whether you like it or not, Chick-Fil-A has a status as an anti-gay organization that gives money to other anti-gay organizations. Ask anyone about Chick-Fil-A, and they will tell you two things: the store sells chicken sandwiches and the owner does not like the LGBTQ community. Hence why I do not want the club associated with a company that supports discrimination, especially when they claim to oppose it. At the end of the day, ethics matter far more than money.

Discrimination is a big gigantic paint brush some seem to be using here. It is time to disabuse that notion. I have yet to hear Chick Fil-A discriminate serving to minorities, LGT, etc. I have yet to hear them discriminate against hiring those afflicted groups mentioned above. After reading the claim about their entire donations, I simply chalked that up as a blip on the radar on the overall grand scheme of things. Why would I say that? Chick Fil-A has some of the best employment practices among large companies in the U.S. and the employees are paid and treated very well in comparison to their counterparts. Another company that is almost comparable to the philosophy of Chick Fil-A is In N Out Burger. That place is headquartered in California of all places and they are very right wing religious in their beliefs. What is practically saving their reputation as of now is the fact they are a private company that simply refuse to submit their financials/disclosures/donations list. Heck, you can barely get the founder's granddaughter, that is currently CEO, to interview. There are a lot of companies out there that have strong beliefs in certain issues in certain realms of the political arena. That is fine and all as long as employees and customers are treated fairly and humanly. I am a firm believer in the first amendment and we have that beautiful choice to exercise it as well by refusing to patronize those companies that one may feel harmed by. One needs to be careful of screaming discrimination when the facts don't back it up. Donating $5 million to a right wing family values organization doesn't constitute direct discrimination. It is well known that the Cathy family are very big about family values and traditional marriage. They make no attempt to hide those notions. I have yet to hear discriminatory practices exhibited by Chick Fil-A. I just think in the era of frenzied political correctness that we are way too quick to scream racism, discrimination, sexism that become so overblown that it practically de-legitimize those causes. This whole Chick Fil-A donation fiasco has been an epic fail for LGT community because a lot of people looked at that as political grandstanding to score cheap points when the issues were really nothing to be overly concerned about.

They contribute to companies that directly discriminate. Please read the facts below and reflect before you make further comments.

    http://www.chick-fil-a.com/Media/PDF/who-we-are.pdf

Look at who they've donated to

    from http://talkaboutequality.wordpress.com/2012/07/19/this-is-why-chick-fil-a-sucks/

WinShape Gave Over $1.7 Million To Anti-Gay Groups. In 2009 alone, WinShape donated $1,733,699 to multiple anti-gay groups:
    • Marriage & Family Legacy Fund: $994,199
    • Fellowship Of Christian Athletes: $480,000
    • National Christian Foundation: $240,000
    • Focus On The Family: $12,500
    • Eagle Forum: $5,000
    • Exodus International: $1,000
    • Family Research Council: $1,000
Marriage & Family Legacy Fund: Founded by Exodus North America’s Alan Chambers who has admitted to anti-gay housing discrimination: “As a property owner of Orlando, I wouldn’t rent to someone who is gay…” He has also implied a connection between gay people and pedophiles with no evidence whatsoever: “I believe the gay community is a good group of people but with groups like NAMBLA [a pedophile group] riding on their coattails.”

Exodus International: Exodus International Board Member John Schmierer began his trips to Uganda in 2009, preaching alongside Nazi revisionist Scott Lively, spreading hatred of gay people to the people and leaders of the country. This directly led to their legislation requiring the execution of some gay people.
In Schmierer’s future trips to Uganda, he would whip up anti-gay furor with lies linking homosexuality to child abuse, calling for mandatory “conversion therapy” for homosexuals and any other number of falsehoods he could come up with.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes: The FCA is decidedly anti-gay and discriminates against gay people from participating. Their website even goes on about “saving” people from being gay. Danny Burns, the National College Conference of the FCA spoke of people being “freed from homosexuality” at the 2011 annual conference.
Focus on the Family: Founded by James Dobson, FotF has been at the front of most anti-gay movements the US has seen since it’s founding. They have supported and funded “Ex-Gay” organizations for years and one of their co-founders (George Alan Rekers) was actually found bringing a gay sex worker on vacation with him. These same organizations have been one of the primary causes of suicide among young gay people forced to go through this “therapy.” Dobson believes gay people will destroy the earth:
“Homosexuals are not monogamous. They want to destroy the institution of marriage. It will destroy marriage. It will destroy the Earth.”
Dobson additionally equates homosexuality and sex with animals quite clearly in the video here.
Family Research Council: Not sure where to start. Let’s start with a Tony Perkins quote:
“While activists like to claim that pedophilia is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. … It is a homosexual problem.”
    — Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, FRC website, 2010

In 2010, The Congress was considering a public condemnation of Uganda’s “Kill the Gays Bill” which would put gay people on trial with a possible death sentence as punishment for homosexuality. Family Research Council spent $25,000 lobbying Congress to not disapprove of this bill.

I understand all the points and counter points but don't ya think it just would have made more sence for the union to try not to create move contraversy by not making this giveaway in the first place? Did they think no one would bring this up? and that there wouldn't be negative attention brought to it? Once again they could mess up a glass of water (and that should have been the tag line)

Look everybody, this whole issue is what it is. I just hope they give me a free chicken sandwich and it does not involve the Union having to score three goals. It's been a long time since I got a free haircut!

Just go to the match and chant real loud "I'm Gay for Chik-Fil-A", and put it on YouTube. I'm sure Truett will spew his Monday morning coffee with that one. Some people pout, while others get smart.

And while you're at it donate your free sandwich to a homeless person. I'm sure they don't care what so and so believes in as long as they get a hot meal.

Nope, and I don't think of the anti-LGBTQ community when I'm patronizing Chick-Fil-A either.

Don't take the free voucher at the game, don't spend your money at Chick-Fil-A, don't spend your money on concessions at that game ... hit them, all parties involved, where it hurts, the wallet.

I'm not, in any way, trying to make light of this subject, but imagine if it was a multi-year jersey sponsorship deal and not a one-off game giveaway?
