RSL would have to win the SS - and the Western Conference playoffs - for that. :)

Looks like the couldn't get (or don't need) Salt Lake's mayor, but they're happy to have the Mayor of Sandy City.

    Not technically.

They'll just need to win the Western Conference playoffs and have more regular season points than (or own the tiebreaker vs) the team that wins the Eastern Conference playoffs.

oh. yeah. they don't do that anymore.

well now i am stumped ... what on earth is so important that you'd have Don, Owner, Founder, Governor and Mayor?

    moving the team? new stadium?

    none of those seem likely.

is this another MLS "major" announcement head fake?

any RSL beat writers/journos have a scoop or inkling?

    I'm guessing new stadium sponsorship.

(Google maps doesn't include the words "Rio Tinto" but currently has the generic "Real Salt Lake Stadium.")

If not that, then certainly the disclosure of who will be RSL's USL Pro affiliate team.

All kinds of winter events at Park City. Also: the sport of bashing the poor morals of the filmmakers at Sundance.

This must be positive news if the politicians are looking for a photo op but I am completely stumped here.

Did the city/state give money to have the stadium built? That is the only tie I can see to have the politicians there.

The Jazz beat the Wizards last night and BYU beat Virginia Tech a few weeks ago in basketball... You're right. Nothing.

It better be more than the Joao Plata signing. I'll guess stadium naming rights plus a new player modeling the new uniforms.

There are probably only 3 players in the world that would bring out the politicians and Plata is not one of them :)

It has to be related to the stadium some how. Although naming rights just does not seem important enough for the commissioner to be there.

    I can see it now...

"We have recently learned that climate change has unfortunately caused the salt to disperse from the great salt lake...however, we are proud to announce that some good will come of this in the form of the re-branding of Utah's favorite soccer team. Introducing, REAL REGULAR LAKE!"

    Yep.
