maybe the guy with the Press fixation will be pleased . . . looks like a good first look at the squad. Who will they play while in camp?
For some reason, couldn't add this to the original post but here is the press release. Notable things: No LePeilbet and Klingenberg because of injuries Tobin Heath has apparently signed over in France for PSG Heath, Rapinoe, Harris, and Press will only be at the camp towards the end of the camp. They will be available for the matches. GK Jane Campbell will only be there at the beginning of the camp. Campbell is also the first high school player called up since Amy Rodriguez in 2005.
Tom had to call in Campbell because he is so used to having at least one teenager in camp at all times.
Tobin Heath (Paris Saint-Germain) OK, I'm officially lost with this transfers/free agency/allocation/signings NWSL craziness. Pinoe allocated, but in Lyon, will be back in May, Amber Brooks - drafted, but in Munchen, MAYBE will be back, Tobin Heath, allocated, but in Paris, MAYBE will be back, WILL NOT be back? Who pay them now, who will pay them if/when they come back, who will decide if they come back, can they come back, will the clubs let them come back, will they negotiate their contracts in NWSL if they come back, what will Thorns do if they won't come back? I mean exception is exception, but this is too much for my poor head...
The French and German clubs definitely pay their wages while they play for them. Rapinoe and Heath both announced as a 6 months deal no extension implied so far.
OK, I know it just a camp roster, but I have to say, nothing would say Algarve Cupfor me like Christen Press scoring two goals against Sweden and Whitney Engen completely shutting down Lotta Schelin.
I don't think this is the camp for Algarve cup, isn't this the camp for the two friendlies early in February? Tom will get his BIG camp where he calls in a lot of players to look at. All the olympians have to be in this camp, Tom can't cut mittsy before seeing her play in his camp. i'm very happy JJ, Dunn and Mewis got call ups. and of course Press. also, it's clear that Tom is looking at the dmid position. Winters, Yael, JJ, Lori L. Also disappointed Morgan Brian didn't get the call up...and Horan and Hagan, but they will hopefully get a chance.
Algarve is the first week in March so the Feb camp is all he's gonna get. The internationals r only gonna be here for a week cause most have club duties so this is his only shot to see them before Algarve. I would think it's mostly chalk against Scotland but I think he can carry 21 for Algarve so we should get to see a few new faces. Ill be disappointed if Press and Engen dont get capped in Portugal. As for Johnston and Dunn, Id be happy if they made an impression.
Dunn and Johnston are there. That's great. But what about Kealia Ohai? Maya Hayes? Morgan Brian? DiBernardo? Kendall Johnson? Give the young pups a chance. See what they got. We had the 91ers before, from 1991. How about the 19ers, for 2019 ? Get their feet wet earlier. See what they can do.
awh. i guess so. I want to see this line up for one match: Dunn, Engen, Saubrunn, Ohara Julie Johnston Rapinoe, Heath, Cheney Morgan, Press
i've heard great things about her, but jane campbell ahead of adrianna franch?? in reality all these young pups are great. but on the uswnt and among the u23s, there are some really good players. so a lot of the u20s will not get in camps much if at all. and it will get worse, as the world's best players take care of themselves and extend their careers. there's gonna be a lot of senseless griping on these boards! the only one of the u20 wc winners i expect to push her way into the team relatively soon is dunn. she is just too good.... ...and maybe julie j. she played way above what i thought she was capable of as a cd. can she beat out brooks for boxxy's dm spot?
Where is Becky Edwards? They still don't have a real midfield captain. Dunn is better than every defender except rampone, Krueger and mitts (like her or not, she plays smart n fast for her size and is a solid reserve in big games) K. Winters - LOL! Hahaha, he moved a-rod back to forwards, was never a midfielder, just needs the right coach. She is a situational forward, ESP against smaller, quick Asian teams, not back physical team like germany. She has her limits at 5'4" Whatever.
Maya Hayes, Morgan Brian etc had great years even after the World Cup..Ohai had the winning goal against defending WC Germany and the winning goal against defending NCAA champ Stanford, she had one of the fasted goals ever in an NCAA final vs Penn State. A big time player in big games, hopefully all the above get a shot somewhere down the line.
What a coincidence then that those are the first two U20s invited to be measured in a camp against the USWNT pool...
I wouldn't read too much into it. She's only coming in for the 1st part of the camp, probably as much for a "this is how you get to here full-time" visit. Tom will get to see Franch on an ongoing basis in NWSL (and really all his backup GKs). Campbell will graduate this year and head off to Stanford, where she will be a bit out of sight for a while.
Plus maybe it had something to do with the fact that Franch is out of school so no longer "free"? I don't think Campbell can be paid yet. Also just to note, Lindsey Horan was invited to the U-20s camp coming up (Feb 2-9). source If she has a good showing maybe she will be asked to the full team next camp.
And that's the key. He took this opportunity to see a few people he wouldnt get to look at in the league. Press, Engen and Averback have small windows of availability. Dunn and Johnston have school. This was very well done. Of the group Dunn is the one who sticks out. He likes players with pace and likes close possession and Dunn has both. While JJ is a Boxx type player, Sermanni may be looking for a DM who can help distribute the ball and Im not sure that's Johnston. The other need that cries out is a tall CB like Engen. Watching Sinclair dominate the smallish back line in the Olympics should set off flairs.
Yeah people forget that Horan was one of the personality scorers on that U-20 team before she came down with a bum knee. If u put Horan between Ohai and a combination of Hayes and Ubagodu, that team suddenly has an offense to go with their defense.
Who did and who didn't get invited to this camp doesn't determine who will be on the WC roster in 2015. I would not be suprised that the people that go to the Algrave roster is 95% the same as the people that played in the Olympics as the Algrave is just a few weeks after the camp ends and I am not sure one camp will be sufficient to make any meaningful changes to the roster. Easy for him to leave off the few college and high school kids as they have to get back to school as they are missing time for the upcoming camp. I was a little curious that Nairn was not invited as she has been with the full team frequently while in college. But again, I am not sure she should read that to mean she is not in consideration for future camps.
Two camps, two places. http://www.ussoccer.com/News/Womens...nni-Names-29-Player-Training-Camp-Roster.aspx ( first sentence)
I saw that . . . these are the locations of the games. I wasn't sure if the camps will also be in these cities, but it makes sense travel wise.
