Wait a second, you can't have it both ways. He should be happy with $300k a year, but a team paying $5-6 million in transfer fees for him would be getting a bargain?

Stoke are the ones being weird?

Brek made a terrible career decision when he signed his last contract with FCD, how can anyone argue that point? Either sign with an out clause to be triggered with a European offer, or don't sign and shop around. FCD would still be there, but why on earth would he tie his hands to FCD and MLS?

The Silver Lining is that Brek will be in-country during World Cup Qualifying and under the watchful eye of JK.

Maybe this gives him chance to become JK's pet project again.

With him, David Ferria, Blas Perez, and Castillo, FCD could be a potent attacking team again...

Who said he should be forever happy with that salary? I said the salary is good enough so he shouldn't be desperate for a transfer to happen. Especially since he's only 22.

The assumption you seem to be showing here is that a young player should try to set himself up to jump ship from MLS as soon as possible.

Seems Conor something and Mix are the flavor of the month now. Torres, Shea, and RR projects are done.

Pfft. A year ago, Schellas was a genius. Now, he sucks. He's probably in between really. Semi-decent. Brek has plenty of people in USMNT interested in him and no doubt gets plenty of input.

Zusi, Cameron and others would have killed to have $300k at 21.

Justin Mapp's trajectory is Justin Mapp's fault. Players have become elite USMNT players while playing in this league. Players have been transferred to Europe after signing long term deals.

Again, he's very young and getting paid very well. No rush needed.

I don't understand why a player who has played in as many professional games, including internationals, as Shea has needs to go on trial in any case. Medical? Fine. Trial? Insult.

So do I. The guy has everything to be our Ibrah, but everyone keeps wanting him to peel back to the defensive line, which is idiotic. You have a stallion built for running and everyone wants to throw a carriage on him.

I would make him lead striker and stop tinkering around with all that backline nonsense.

He is already crazy deadly on the left... He would do well immediately on the left for a counter attacking team with an 8 foot tall forward in the middle. Like STOKE ;)

I disagree most of the fault lies with Shea for signing an extension. There's another option here, he signed an extension with the understanding when an offer comes, FCD will accept and get something instead of nothing if he left on a free. 2/3 of 3.5M is still a lot more than nothing if Shea simply walked.

I also don't think the league should step in. It greatly undermines clubs and throws into question competitive balance. Are clubs allowed to do business themselves and stand on their own, or does the league decide what's good for each and every club where they've been wrong a number of times? Nixing a Tor DP deal while letting the Rafa deal go through? Telling FCD they can't sell Shea when FCD is ok with it, while allowing Tor to throw 4M+ at Frings? So you allow some teams to shit away money and don't let others make deals which wouldn't half as bad for them?

If FCD and Stoke agree on a deal, MLS should be clearing the paperwork. This comes on the heels of LAG backing out of an agreed upon transfer of Landon to Everton in Aug. This comes after MLS rules won't allow Sea to keep Montero who's pretty important to Sea and is a draw for fans in the North West. So MLS is ok with losing Montero because of a stupid DP rule where Sea can't pay 4 DP's a combined 3M, yet NY could throw 8M at a single(Drogba), or LAG can throw 4M at a single player which they did(Keane) and probably another 4M at Lampard. Now after they're fine with Montero leaving and not getting a transfer fee at this point, they step in and block an actual agreed up big between Stoke and FCD which did produce a decent transfer fee based on Shea's form last year.

I'd also say, if MLS is so concerned with Shea and getting value for him, then put more pressure on MLS teams to hire competent coaches, as SH is clueless in how to use Shea and is partly to blame for killing his value.

Not to derail, but whatever happened to that guy? I remember looking back at MLS, after Beasley left for Eindhoven and he was supposed to be one of the 'next great things' in Chicago.

Either way, re: Shea. Good player, but 4 million pounds is a lot of money. And I think Stoke City would be a bad fit. Should go to the Netherlands (speaking of Beasley) if the interest is there. Though he could probably stand up to the physicality of England. Some wsay it reminds them of the Clint Dempsey saga, maybe so but from what I've seen around corners about this player he reminds me more of Clint Mathis. But he signed a long term deal. At this point, players should know the risk of signing a long term deal with MLS, because it's MLS and not the club. And with it being MLS there is a detachment with the club that is automatic. I think it's risky, but it is what it is.

Shea's fault, he re-signed. Difference between Montero and Shea is that Shea is American, more marketable and viewed as a bigger face for the league. One part I think you're hinting at and I agree with is Shea's relationship with SH, and it's not good. Any failed transfer is going to discourage a player, especially if he goes back to Dallas with a manager he doesn't get along with.

So if it fails he'll have to do his best with what's in front of him, play well until the summer window and use USMNT opportunities to increase his suitors.

Shea re-signing has nothing to do with MLS overriding the decisions of FO's. It has nothing to do with MLS basically telling the FCD FO we don't trust you to make your own decisions and we're going to correct your mistakes.

Shea could have avoided all this by not signing an extension, but that's different than imo, acknowledging MLS should not be overriding the decisions of FO's.

And when the agreed price is doubled on you at the last minute, nobody buys you.

Stoke know who has the final say, it's MLS. They just went down this road with Cameron.

I have to say I found the whole potential transfer/trial absurd. I mean according to FCD Shea is not even going to be able to start training for 10 days...the transfer window closes in 9. Shea would be coming off an injury and very much out of 'soccer' shape straight into an EPL side in mid-season form. I can't really see a scenario where he could contribute in a positive way for a few months at best (more likely he would be set up for 'failure' IMO). And if it was i indeed a trial that would make no sense for any party involved. a) he apparently can't even train b) why would FCD want him to go over there with a real possibility to re-injure himself and c) he would be no good to Stoke for a while anyway. It just doesn't make much sense to me.

I'm just glad he's not going to Stoke City. I will never have a soft spot for them, regardless how many yanks they recruit.

Does anyone else think this could have something to do with how MLS feels towards HSG? Perhaps they feel that HSG does not invest enough back into their clubs and they are playing hard ball with HSG as much as Stoke. I don't know enough about the clubs that HSG owns, but on the surface it's at least plausible.

I also think that this whole thing is going to turn out to be a lot of hand wringing about nothing like it always is. Shea will end up being sold for a fair market price just like almost everyone else that has been down this road. There are still 9 days left in this window, which might as well be 9 weeks with all of the brinksmanship that goes on with these things. It's not like they are deciding the fate of a global economy here;)

If Brek is worth 5M, what is Michael Bradley worth?

Dempsey's price had a ceiling due to his advanced age. Cameron is a good player but just another fullback at Stoke with comparable worth.

Initial reports of a trial came out of England I believe and even though every American journalist seemed to agree, it didnt make sense and I never really believed that was the case. What Hyndman said about Shea's timetable today, if you will, does not surprise me in the slightest..

    Yeah, really.

If MB is went for 4.6M and Clint after scoring 17 EPL goals went for about 8M USD, then how exactly is Shea priced by MLS at 6-7M?

If Clint was bought for 8M

    MB for 4.6M

Then 3.5M seems awfully fair for Shea, while commanding double(about 2.5M more than MB went for) looks rather ridiculous.
