Falvo, you seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding as to how the super draft works. Teams draft players that they WANT. There is no rigging, no nonsense about favoritism from the league. The reason teams draft a certain player is because of what position they need, from what they've seen of that player, and how that player will be taken in their market(Italian in Montreal, Canadians to Canadian teams, Mexican-American to CUSA,etc). Just like we drafted Delgado to much surprise as there were better players left, we did it because the FO saw something in him and he fits a need. Its not that complicated. That's it. Conversation over.
Ok, fair enough. Back to the thread, has anyone ever seen Delgado or for that matter, (from last years draft) Husted play and most importantly, does anyone really know anything about their qualities and styles of play and can they help this team?
Highlight of Hustedt from his senior year in college. The goal at the end is ridiculous. Saw him a little at right back in a reserve game. Showed that same close control/strong in possession game where he was able to break the pressure of multiple defenders and find a teammate. Not really sure what position he is projecting into right now, could be a RM, RB or a CM.
one things for sure we are gonna learn all about Hustedt, Muller, Garza, Delgado, Tracy, etc. with the grueling schedule coming up. Like Frank said, these guys will be seeing the field this season.
Adam Jahn did not impress me at all at the Stanfurd-UCLA games the past 2 seasons. I mean I could tell he was one of their best players but nothing screamed "MLS" about his play. He scored but it wasn't anything special. I agree with you about Luke Spencer I had the same reaction. I actually saw him play. I watched the Indiana-Xavier ncaa tourney game where Indiana destroyed Xavier 4-1. Not at all impressed with Spencer, did not see him as potential MLS player. The one to watch from Indiana for next year is their junior Nikita Kotlov. He had a great hat trick in that Xavier game. Of course he is also on everyone's radar after assisting on the game winner against Notre Dame and scoring the championship clincher against Georgetown in the final.
oh i emphatically agree Kotlov looked fantastic. 2014 looks like a pretty deep class with Jared Watts, David Opuku, Mamadou Diouf, Giuseppe Gentile, Andre Blake, Earl Edwards, Domenick Sarle, Alfred Komora, Dylan Mare, Alex Shinsky, Eric Miller, Kyle Venter, Marlon Duran, Victor Chavez, Andrew Craven, Patrick Mullins all gonna be there. This is gonna be a great crop. Id reckon Shinsky, Blake, Gentile, Komora, Miller, and Edwards will be that Gen Ad class. that class just dictates we go BPA in it to me. there is so much talent there that even if we win the league we will get someone useful. Whoever gets Shinsky or Komora is gonna be a happy, happy team.
When I saw Adam Jahn, I liked what I saw but yes you are right nothing impressive to be MLS quality but I doubt there is much difference between him and the rest of these other unknowns. That goes back to the other point I tried to make in that colleges don't prepare the players for MLS and the only real way to see them is to give them a chance and see if they can develop or not. Against Georgetown in the final and the Quakes #15, the great Tom Muller? How about that?
I won't deny the NCAA is a flawed development system but it is the best thing we have available right now for 18-22 year old kids. It also gives a chance for "late bloomer" kids to continue to play even if they aren't highly touted as youth prospects (i.e. the Wondo's and Dempseys and Beitashours of the world). Muller was blameless on Kotlov's goal. His CB partner #14 with the knee brace and his keeper both went up against Eriq Zavaleta for an aerial ball and lost out. Zavaleta knocked it down to kotlov for the easy finish. The keeper was mainly to blame on that one. He has to control aerial balls that close to him 30 second mark): http://www.ncaa.com/video#!soccer-men/2012-12-09/indiana-scores-program-s-eighth-crown Muller spent that entire game shutting down everything that came Zavaleta's way. Zavaleta eventually got sick of it and finally decided to drift away from Muller for this decisive play at about the 72nd minute mark.
Exactly!! This is a little like Wahl's Aspiration rankings, or whatever he calls them. If you want to be taken seriously, then you need to play tougher competition. Maybe you try to pick a team that is physically closer to you rather than farther away if you're trying to hold down travel costs, but you have to take on the big boys if you want to be treated like one. Exactly! There are still way more people living on the East Coast than the West Coast, thus most of the newspapers are on the east coast. Thus, most of the sports writers and therefore voters in these polls live back east. Sucks, but that's how it is. (Well, actually, I want all of those folks to stay back east so that we have a bit more elbow room here in the West. I can think of some folks who should move east too.) GO QUAKES!! - Mark
They're irritable and obnoxious, anyway. Falvo, what's the story for Tony 'Mr. All-Pac 12' Salciccia?
Not sure really. Of course , I'm biased and think he is good enough but for some reason, I don't know if they believe he is good enough for MLS. I've already told him to get his degree and forget about it as he only has 3 classes until he finishes.
Peter McGlynn, midfielder, UCSB, in the 4th round. This is the guy that UCSB kicked off the team for pushing a ref.
After the draft, they called up Tony to come and try out. He reports tomorrow morning. New England wanted him, called his coach at CAL , Kevin Grimes but he wasn't in his office so they passed on him. Quakes were hoping he wouldn't be picked because they needed defenders. Hope he makes it! Good job Anthony, it will be great to see you play for your hometown team!

I've seen Delgado play bunch of times over his career at USD. Hes a hard worker and a great, really down to earth kid. Over the course of his career, the offense basically went through Delgado. Whenever the ball came to him, the game slowed down. As expected from a pro prospect, he was usually the best player on the field. I also saw Baca play a couple of times in LMU v USD matchups, but I remember Delgado being bigger and stronger. From what I saw and remember, Baca's touch and game were a bit more skilled and refined. Delgado also took all the set pieces for USD. This past year USD had a great season. The Delgado-led team went on a huge winning streak and made the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament, coming from behind in all of their wins. Overall, I think its a nice pick for SJ. I think Delgado has a chance to earn some PT and contribute. I'm rooting for him.
