As seems to be the consensus, I am a little underwhelmed by the Rapid's picks. That said, its impossible to tell how any of the players in the draft will pan out. Identifying talent is somewhat of a crapshoot. Drafting a talented player doesn't guarantee he will be successful. At the highest level, everyone is talented, so they better be hard working as well.

I wonder why the Rapids didn't draft Zimmerman, but I've never actually watched the guy play an entire game. Same goes for the guys the Rapids did draft. I can't be too upset about a guy that people tell me is supposed to be good, especially when one of those people is Ives (who strikes me as an egomaniac). I think Marx probably has better insight into youth players than a lot of people doing mock drafts and analysis.

I would have liked to see the Rapids address their needs more directly, but its way too early to judge the draft class.

Going into this draft I figured they would try to get at least two CBs and a forward today. Then in the supplemental draft get a GK and either another defender or another attacking player. The most sure fire thing I expected was a GK in the supplemental draft. After today, who knows what we will do.

For those wondering we have the 6th pick in the second round and the sixth pick of the 3rd round in the supplemental draft. We do not have picks in the 1st (Buddle trade) or the 4th round (Janniere trade back in the day). It is Tuesday January 22nd via conference call.

FWIW, MLS Soccer is calling the Rapids' draft one of the top three:
Better Today Than They Were Yesterday,
    Colorado Rapids
Started the day by signing a Chilean international winger, finished it by getting direct replacements for Omar Cummings (Deshorn Brown )and Jeff Larentowicz (Dillon Powers) as well as the left back with the highest ceiling in the draft (Kory Kindle). They are in much, much better shape to play Oscar Pareja’s 4-3-3 now.

Hey I'm an amateur doing this, just hope Bravo's picks prove how much an amateur I am over proving I was the pro.

Man, I don't like our current Defensive roster at all, even if Brown pans out as one of the leading scorers in league, in 2013 I bet we wish we had Zimmerman or Zavaleta to help at CB.

Went back and checked the publish player rankings and no one had a Brown ahead of the "Z's" or Lopez (who went to KC), so doesn't look like we used the best player available route.

To be fair, none of the published rankings give much/any thought into how a particular player will fit into a particular style. In our case, I think Brown is a better fit than Johnson on the front line.

Not trying to claim that the players we got fit best in the 4-3-3 that OP wants to run, but wanted to point out the limitations of the majority of the rankings.

Matt Doyle is as bad as Simon Borg and Ives for me.

Looking through draft selections again, how happy would we all be if Colorado traded for #4 slot giving up #11 and then took both Zimmerman (#4) and Brown (#6). Now that would of been way to do it.

    Draft grades: http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-articles/grading-the-2013-mls-superdraft_aid28353

    Colorado Rapids – B
Picks: Deshorn Brown (Round 1, Pick 6), Dillon Powers (Round 1, Pick 11), Kory Kindle (Round 2, Pick 25)
There were rumblings that Powers showed up to the combine overweight, which may have really worked to the Rapids favor on Thursday. The center midfielder from Notre Dame could be in for a big rookie season with the Rapids dealing away Jeff Larentowicz on Wednesday. Rapids used that pick to select Brown who is a quality prospect for a forward line that lost Omar Cummings in the offseason.

Looking at that topdrawersoccer.com article, it seems they give out grades at random.

You get 2 solid guys and a 3rd, later pick who has big league athleticism? B.
You have one pick at #2 and don't completely blow it? B.
You pick 12th and pickup a midfielder and then a forward at #29? Eh, #MLS4RSL, B+.

There were 4 teams with grades greater than B, 3 B+'s and 1 A- (SporKS, for getting GA Mikey Lopez at #14, which seems a reasonable grade).

the Seattle trade was a move i see that really screwed us over i think we were thinking we could get zav with the 11 pick. But in a way I'm glad we didn't pick up a big center back why?. Well drew moor is not even 6 feet neither is Marvell. They would be his teacher's to adapt to the higher level of play..... great players to learn from. but you can't teach a big to be a big if your not a big.

i think we sign a 6'3 25-30 year old center back whose already established not needing any adaptation then in the next draft we snatch up the best available center back who will learn from this already established center back from outside the mls who should be in higher quality then most center backs in the league already. The question is who could we get that fits the 4-3-3 system the only idea i can come up with is something from the lower English division maybe derby has someone they would not mind sending over.

I was in meetings all day yesterday, so haven't caught up with the thread. At first, I was a bit nonplussed that they passed on Zimmerman, but overall, I'm pretty happy with the draft.

I think Brown has potentially huge upside, and who knows how long they'll keep Buddle? Powers seems to fit the box-to-box mold that we need to play alongside Rivero & Thomas in the middle. Some scouts said he was pro-ready.

I was underwhelmed by the selection of Kory Kindle, I mean, we have 3 LB's now of the same age. However, after some reading, I suspect we may be converting him back to a forward or wing, since he played forward up to two years ago. He's supposed to be a fantastic athlete, so his defensive deficiencies wouldn't be a liability if moved forward.

Here are the scouting reports on the players from mlssoccer.com. One thing I find encouraging is that each of them is rated with ability to combine, one-touch, and play in small spaces. Enjoy.

    Deshorn Brown
What Scouts Say: "Speedy forward. Incredible pace. Breakaway speed ... Transferred from the University of Mobile in NAIA ... Draws you out and spins behind you ... Big, strong, powerful, scores with both feet -- was a handful in college ... Has a good finishing touch. Finishes well in tight spaces ... Can hold the ball up and run in behind ... Question about his movement away from the ball ... He works hard and will chase back ... Puts an honest day's work in. Has a good work rate ... Criticized for not connecting well and being offside often during a match ... Can also play wide."

    Dillon Powers
What Scouts Say: "Two-way, box-to-box midfielder ... Powerful, strong with good size ... He's hard to dispossess. Pressure doesn't faze him ... Can grab a hold of a game, change the tempo and dictate it ... Great passing range ... Good feel for the game and he's savvy with the ball. Good soccer IQ and can go by someone 1-v-1 ... Good feet. Can play one-touch everywhere, off his chest, his head. Technically sound ... More of a box-to-box guy than an all-out attacking midfielder ... European type of midfielder with good quality and good passing ... A player you don't appreciate until you have him ... Last year was first year he's been fit. Had groin surgery in college … He can play soccer, but as an attacking mid, he doesn’t make runs into the box … He just plays the pass from the midfield … Has to play in the middle of the park ... If the game is a scrap, he doesn't shy away from it but he's at his best when he's playing soccer ... Handles the ball well and handles the pressure well ... Timing of his runs are pretty good but he's not one to run out of the way and get in those spots. Doesn't make runs in behind ... Knock on him is that he's slow. Not too fast ... Doesn't have the pace to be a wide guy ... Might need to learn to be a defensive mid to make it at the next level ... Notre Dame didn't ask him to defend a lot. Had a guy next to him to do dirty work ... Doesnt win headers, but links well in the midfield. No defensive mentality to him and doesn't win tackles ... Great captain and role model ... A player who can make it in the league ... Handles pressure well. Will be better in MLS."

    Kory Kindle
What Scouts Say: “Attacking left back … Freak athlete and very good in the air … Phenomenal athlete. Great speed, great body frame, great leaping ability and he’s strong … The kid can fly … An athlete who looks the part ... Looks fantastic when running forward with the ball ... Finds good seams … Technically he’s just OK. Can get better with the ball … Can he clean himself up technically? … Should be cleaner and better passer with the ball ... Has to be more consistent with the ball at his feet … Dynamic running at you ... Didn't see him defend too much ... Did not produce late in the 2012 season … He joins in a lot from his left back position … Loves to get up and down the line … Scored some goals from there and had his share of assists … Converted from forward to left back and has only played the position for two years … Can help an MLS team right away … Sure-fire first rounder … He gets stuff off in attack, whether a shot or a cross … Will have to clean things up defensively … The way Bakersfield plays, he’s not whipping in crosses that often. They combine more and he can do that … Good at combination play … Off the field he’s smart … He could even be a great left centerback although that might take a bit of time … 1-on-1 defending a little suspect, but that can improve with time and experience … Could get more soccer savvy … Good on set pieces on both sides of the field … Can turn the corner with his pace … Knows when to dribble and when to shoot.”

I never really considered Larentowicz a box-to-box linkup guy, more of a CDM.

I wonder if we should be reading into the bolded part, and in regard to which players (Larentowicz, Cummings, etc.):

I think that is obvious. Casey, Thompson, Koz, Omar, Jeff... All wanted out. Worrisome to say the least.

I'm not sure about Casey or Omar. I think Casey would have stayed if we had paid him what he wanted.

Saw some nice draft reviews by UK based the guardian, here is Rapids:

    Colorado Rapids

Picked: Deshorn Brown (6), forward; Dillon Powers (11), midfielder; Kory Kindle (25), defender

Our regular Rapids fan rep Todd Haggerty emailed in during the draft to point out the extensive turnover of players that has gone on this off-season, with Oscar Pareja seemingly being backed to continue his attempt at a fast, possession game (ironically not dissimilar to the one rivals RSL made work under Jason Kreis). Stalwarts like Casey, Cummings and Larentowicz are gone and looking at the intriguing selection of players from the SuperDraft, the first impression is mixed. Deshorn Brown is not short of self-belief and even a little bit of the attitude some coaches like to see in a striker, while Dillon Powers may not look much like an athlete, but he had an effective combine and muscled his way past other players who might look the part more. Where his lack of mobility fits in Pareja's brave new world is another matter. Kory Kindle is a little more recognizably in the Pareja mould - a very speedy left back who plugs a hole in the Rapids defensive depth chart, while also matching the style of game their coach wants to play.

What's worrisome is blanket statements like "wanted out" and reading too much into them. If you think, as ANY employee (regardless of athlete or burger flipper), that you have more to offer your employer than what your employer is willing to offer you in return OF COURSE you will begin to consider taking your skillset elsewhere. That, however, is not necessarily an indication of your "true worth" nor is it necessairly an indication of your employer's "failure to value you". It's often a multi-faceted and much deeper set of reasons than just simply, "we want out."

Having said that, I can tell you that Omar and Koz felt underappreciated for a long time going back to the Plush/Gary Smith days. In a way, Hinchey/Bravo/Pareja did them a favor by giving them a new opportunity elsewhere.

Thompson and JL simply do not fit in the system Pareja is trying to put into place. Again, keeping them here and trying to force a square peg into a round hole or relegating passionate, competetive athletes to the bench would not have been fair. I'm glad they are getting their chances to ply their trade elsewhere.

Casey, it seems to me, has overvalued himself out of a position on this roster.

Looking at it this way might actually change the reading from "worrisome" to "optimistic".

The sad part of it is that going elsewhere is where the opportunities lie.

The board has gotten in the habit of just accepting that these players were no longer good for the team. It all seems to come down to last year being a bad year, and now they're expendable.

The beginning of last year started with many threads about how we were seeing proof of the positive changes that occurred. Only for the team to fail worse. We're now seeing the defense of Hinchey who seemed sure that the club would have a shirt sponsor, and still doesn't.

It's time to stop pretending that Plush and Smith and the players were incompetent and that there is anything like an easy fix. There isn't. I don't want those guys back, they like the players have moved on to better opportunities. The Rapids need to become a team where everyone with talent sees their opportunity, rather than a place where people with talent don't fit.

I totally hear you and agree in the sense that I very much want to see this become a place and organization that quality, talented players want to play for. I became friends with Koz and, by extension, got to know Omar a little bit and I am personally quite sad to see them both go.

Let me clear - I am NOT blindly defending anyone. not Hinchey or Bravo, not Plush or Smith, not Omar or Koz. All I'm saying is that in these kinds of situations - situation with big personalities, inevitable change, a terrible season so closely following the only Championship in our history....combined with passionate fans who truly care about the team and the players (like myself and many others on this board) it can be easy to fall into these somewhat black and white analytical traps. I'm just arguing that rarely are things so black and white.

I don't really know against whom or what POV spot is arguing.

I don't think anyone's under the illusion there's an easy fix. There's been a fairly wide skepticism about the additions so far. Plenty have wondered about when all the holes in the backline will be plugged, and plenty don't see how the offense will be improved given the players added at this point.

Some people have seen the departure of 2010 players justified, others have bemoaned their loss.

The mix of pov's here hardly seems unusual or unreasonable given the team's circumstances.

I never saw anything about Omar, and there was a rumor that Larentowicz asked to be traded but it was also wrapped around the reported decision to accept Chicago's offer because that's what Larentowicz wanted, so I'm not sure if he asked to be traded or, since he was being traded, he asked to go to Chicago.

I also think that Casey quote has a lot of room for interpretation. Given that Casey is a Denver native I think he was less interested in leaving and more interested in getting paid at the level he thinks he is, and the Rapids don't see him at that level.
