Snark, I know, but this is actually kind of depressing. Less than half the wins of ManU this year and we're bringing back a 35 year old. Of course if more/better comes in January, it may be good, but I'm not feeling very confident about it.

Agree. Don't get me wrong. I love TH ( he shook my sons hand, an awesome memory) but this somehow smells of desperation on our part. He is part of the past, the glory days long gone. It doesn't feel right to drag him into our current mess. He can't fix it, no single human being could. It 's a lose / lose situation. The risk is the memory of TH's great contribution to The Arsenal will be tainted by some stupid poorly thought out "return". bad idea !

I'd certainly rather have him out there in the last 15-20 minutes of a close game than Gervinho. At least he'll put a shot on goal.

Part of me says yes, part says no.

the yes part is that "yay! the King is back!"

the no part is "how would our rivals see it if we have to get legendary ex-players to come back?" If we're being honest, if Spurs had an injury crisis up front with Defoe and "Ade" out, and Andre got back Robbie Keane, we would mock them for it.

I would like him to be back again, but NOT as the major January signing.

    Can't hurt.

Last year Chamakh ran around like a chicken with his head cut off for 75 minutes against Leeds without doing anything.

Henry came on as a sub and scored a goal almost immediately.

Kind of says it all. His physical skills have deteriorated, but he's still a player. Just like Michael Jordan on the Wizards or the increasingly decrepit Kobe Bryant. Game is game. The IQ, confidence, and shooting ability haven't left him. He just can't run like he used to.

wouldn't we be better fixing our problem for the long term instead of patching it up for a month or 2 season on season without ever fixing it?

I have this vision of TH holding up the League Cup for us next year and passing it on to Wilshere. No hate here. He will play his heart out for 15-20 minutes per game when he is on. He will score goals too. People forget that MLS is a very physically demanding league. The pace is at par with EPL, not the skill.

You seem to be implying that the two are mutually exclusive. Do you believe that to be the case?

if we fix the problem we don't need to loan henry, surely, because the problem is fixed.

yes it is. why loan a player we wouldn't need? or, in other words, why pay the wages of a player loaned to fix a problem you've fixed already, especially when there are other problems that will stretch the budget? i could see a justification if the main squad was pretty damn good and we are just covering our bases, but that's not the case.
    so,
    1) henry is signed as a short term desperation measure, meaning the problem still exists.
    or
    2) henry is signed on top of the problem being fixed and is therefore a redundant/extravagant/non priority signing.
we don't, and can't afford to, do the latter and the former is just an acceptance that we're f**ked

What's with all the hate? If we cajole Pires, Bergkamp and Vieira out of retirement, we could be a real force again. "If you (re)build it, trophies will come"

Props given for using cajole but taken away for setting up a strawman to smash even if you're just being snarky.
    :p
But seriously, by no means will I be happy if the only thing we do in January is bring in Henry. To the contrary, I'll be extremely disappointed. But unless someone can show me some evidence that bringing him in will necessarily mean we are financially unable to do anything else, I don't see what it can hurt.

if we're paying him any kind of reasonable wage, which is a fair assumption, you may not see any tangible loss, but it is there. it could be the half a million £ that prevents us signing someone either now, or, more likely in the next year or so. that's all well and good IF he is needed now and if your budget isn't that tight, but my point was that IF we actually got our finger out and fixed the problem now for the long term then this loan signing shouldn't be needed at all.

haha. It's really more of an emotional thing for me, not a rational one. Maybe he will give us an extra spark or be an asset for however long he's here.

I guess I just hate watching legends play past their expiration date - it messes up the neat and tidy legacy I have developed for them in my memory bank. Plus, it does kinda reek of desperation. It was like when I finally got to see Jordan play, albeit for the Wizards. It was pretty damn cool to see him in person, and he was still impressive, but I knew I wasn't seeing the Jordan that I idolized in my childhood. Why can't they just ride off into the sunset dammit!!??

Maybe this is looking to far into it, but they gave him a first team number again. Although it is probably just for the training gear and practice purposes. Also, that is what the team needs, to have fun while they are out there. Then we will win trophies...

Henry is officially just like the rest of the guys if he too is now carrying Santos on his back. Santos = Eboue (funny but not "ha ha" funny).

If we've got some other attacker in the possible pipeline for January then I imagine we wouldn't see TH14 (or whatever his squad # is at the moment) until that's settled.

But even if he's just around for training, he could have a postive effect on our results. I wasn't expecting that last year but that's what I've heard. All good.
